Wada calls on US to stop ‘dangerous' Enhanced Games

LOS ANGELES : World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) chief Witold Banka has called on US authorities to prevent the drug-fuelled Enhanced Games from taking place next year.
Speaking in Lausanne in an address to a meeting of summer Olympic officials, Banka said the inaugural edition of the Enhanced Games in Las Vegas – where athletes will be free to use performance-enhancing drugs – 'must be stopped.'
'We all must stand up and condemn those who put greed and ego before the well-being of athletes and the values of fair competition,' Banka said.
'As the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles approach, we cannot allow what should be a celebration of honest sporting endeavour to be overshadowed by this cynical attempt to undermine clean sport.
'Wada is now urging the authorities in the US to seek ways to prevent the Enhanced Games from going ahead as planned. For the sake of athletes' health and the purity of sport, it must be stopped.'
In separate remarks following the address, Banka urged US authorities to consider legal action to prevent the Enhanced Games from taking place.
'Every effort should be made by the authorities in the US to prevent this dangerous event from going ahead as planned,' Banka said.
'This should be explored from the legal perspective. For example, I would question whether it is legal for licensed doctors to give these potent drugs to healthy athletes.
'It goes completely against the rules and values of their profession…I think there is a strong role to be played by the US Anti-Doping Agency (Usada)'.
Usada has been a strident critic of Wada in recent years following controversy over the global doping watchdog's handling of positive drug tests from 23 Chinese swimmers in 2021.
Responding to Banka's remarks on Wednesday, Usada chief executive Travis Tygart accused the Wada president of 'attempting to leverage this sideshow to distract from fixing Wada and to stoke anti-American rhetoric.'
'As we have repeatedly said, for all of the obvious reasons, the Enhanced Games or any other open competition is a bad idea,' Tygart said in comments emailed to AFP, urging Banka to accept an invitation to a US Senate hearing next week where the 2021 case involving Chinese swimmers is to be discussed.
The first Enhanced Games will be staged in Las Vegas in May 2026, with athletes participating in three sports – athletics, swimming and weightlifting.
Athletes will be allowed to use drugs banned across international sport such as steroids and human growth hormones, with winners of each event receiving US$250,000, and a bonus of US$1 million for any athlete who breaks a world record.

MIAMI GARDENS (US), June 21 — Bayern Munich booked their place in the knockout stages of the Club World Cup with Harry Kane and Michael Olise on target in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Argentina's Boca Juniors yesterday. After defeats for Paris Saint-Germain against Botofogo and Chelsea against Flamengo, Bayern bucked the trend of European teams falling to South American opponents with an accomplished victory in the Group C encounter. Hard Rock Stadium was packed to the rafters with Boca fans who once again brought incredible passion and noise to the NFL stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins. But Bayern soon set about quieting the 63,587 crowd with Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka taking charge of central midfield and the movement of Bayern's frontline stretching the Boca defence. The German side thought they had the lead in the eighth minute when a corner from Olise passed untouched through a crowded six-yard box and into the net. But the referee was called to the monitor for a VAR review where he was able to clearly see that Serge Gnabry had blocked and tangled with Boca goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin, and the effort was ruled out. Ten minutes later, however, Bayern had the breakthrough when Boca were unable to fully clear a ball into the box and Kane pounced with a clinical left-foot shot into the bottom corner. Bayern smelled blood and pushed for a second — Olise found Gnabry on the right and his low ball across the face of the goal was just inches away from the sliding Kingsley Coman. Boca desperately needed to find a foothold in the game and they came close when a thundering free-kick from Kevin Zenon was punched out by Manuel Neuer. Moments later Zenon tested the Bayern keeper again with another fierce strike which Neuer punched away with his right hand. Olise's decisive blow But for all the signs of life from Boca, Bayern looked in comfortable charge of the game and Kane was close to making it 2-0 with a dangerous free-kick which dipped just too late and flashed over the bar. Bayern continued to look for a second after the interval and the busy Olise should have done better from close range but couldn't connect properly with an off-balance shot. Boca never gave up harrying and grafting though and their reward came in the 66th minute. On a turnover in midfield, Alan Velasco found Miguel Merentiel down the right and he powered goalwards, skipping around Josip Stanisic before producing a brilliant, confident finish past the helpless Neuer. It looked like South American clubs' unbeaten record in the tournament so far was going to hold, but with six minutes remaining Olise provided the decisive blow. After a scramble on the edge of the box, Kane found the France international with a delicate lay-off with the outside of his foot and Olise provided precision control with a superb side-foot finish into the corner. Konrad Laimer thought he had wrapped up the win with a third moments later but he was ruled offside. It was the first loss for a South American side in the competition and it leaves Boca with just one point going into their final game in the group. PHILADELPHIA, June 21 — Flamengo overturned a first-half deficit to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in their Club World Cup Group D clash yesterday, with second-half goals from Bruno Henrique, Danilo, and Wallace Yan securing the Brazilian side's second consecutive win in the tournament. MIAMI, June 20 — Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe has been released from hospital in the United States after suffering a stomach bug, the Spanish giants said yesterday. Mbappe, who is in the USA at the Club World Cup, had what the club called 'an acute case of gastroenteritis' and was taken in for tests and treatment. 'Our player Kylian Mbappe was discharged from hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid training camp,' Los Blancos said in a statement.
