Nigeria: Navy crushes six illegal refineries, seizes stolen crude oil
Personnel of the Nigerian Navy attached to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos have conducted several operations against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other illicit activities in the Niger Delta region.
This is in a sustained effort to enhance Nigeria's daily crude oil output and combat economic sabotage in the Niger Delta.
In total, the three operations led to the deactivation of six illegal refining sites, with the seizure of approximately 8,660 litres of stolen crude oil and 1,005 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
The materials were found in three ovens, 28 dug-out pits, and 14 polythene sacks.
These successful operations, conducted as part of Operation DELTA SANITY II and guided by actionable intelligence, reaffirm the commitment of FOB Escravos to the strategic directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla (Admiralty Medal), in eradicating all forms of maritime illegality in Nigeria's territorial waters.
Notably, on 21 April 2025, following credible intelligence, FOB Escravos personnel discovered and deactivated two illegal refining sites at Obodo Omadino in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
The sites contained approximately 1,900 litres of stolen crude oil stored in two ovens and 10 dug-out pits.
Building on this success, two additional illegal refining sites were uncovered and dismantled in the same area on 4 May 2025.
During this operation, approximately 3,710 litres of stolen crude oil and 330 litres of illegally refined AGO were seized, stored in 11 dug-out pits and five polythene sacks.
Sustaining the momentum, on 11 May 2025, the Base identified and destroyed another two illegal refining sites at Obodo Omadino.
These contained an estimated 3,050 litres of stolen crude oil and 675 litres of illegally refined AGO, concealed within an oven, seven dug-out pits, and nine polythene sacks.
FOB Escravos remains poised to frustrate the activities of economic saboteurs, ensuring that the country derives maximum benefits from its crude oil resources.

Nigeria to introduce real-time tracking for oil export shipments
Nigeria's oil regulator is set to bring in a new rule that requires oil producers to obtain an export permit, vessel clearance and a unique identification number to enable real-time tracking of cargoes, based on regulations seen by Reuters. The government said the updated regulations are designed to enable real-time monitoring of oil cargo exports, aiming to combat theft and under-declaration at export terminals, and thereby significantly enhance government revenue. The new rules mark a significant departure from the previous system which only required producers to declare cargoes to customs authorities for export permit issuance. "The new guidelines represent a significant step toward a more transparent, accountable and efficient oil export regime in Nigeria," the spokesperson for the regulator said. Reinforcing the necessity of these changes, Ayodele Oni, an energy lawyer at Lagos-based Bloomfield law firm, said the previous system was not equipped for real-time tracking. "This deficiency led to issues such as under-reporting, theft, revenue loss and mismatches in export data," Oni said. Under the revised framework, known as the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Advance Cargo Declaration Regulation, exporters must file comprehensive details of the vessel and cargo in advance, including the consignee, port destination, tonnage and estimated time of arrival. Nigeria: FG inspects national cybercrime centre in Bayelsa
The Office of the Special Assistant to the President on ICT Development and Digital Innovation has hosted the Commissioner of Police, National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), Abuja, CP Oche Henry Ifeayin, for the official inspection of the South-South Annex of the NPF-NCCC in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The facility, which will serve the cybercrime and digital forensics needs of Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States, is said to be a result of strategic collaboration between government and private sector players. In a demonstration of active cooperation, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police led the visiting Commissioner on a tour of the state's CCTV surveillance infrastructure, showing real-time digital inclusion efforts through digital surveillance systems deployed across critical areas of Bayelsa State. Nigerian Tribune learnt that annex and its connected innovations form part of a broader legal and national strategy to secure Nigeria's digital space, supported by the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
