70 free shuttle buses arranged for Pushkaralu pilgrims
BHUPALPALLY : Jayashankar Bhupalpally Collector Rahul Sharma has assured pilgrims that elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure smooth access to the Pushkar Ghat. He told TNIE that 70 free shuttle buses are operating from the main bus stand and designated private vehicle parking areas to the ghats.
'There is no need for pilgrims to worry about reaching the ghats. The state government has arranged a free shuttle service to ensure that no one has to walk the two-kilometre distance,' he said.
Rahul Sharma further stated that all necessary steps have been taken to handle the increasing number of pilgrims expected over the weekend.
'With only three days left for Saraswati Pushkaralu, we are expecting two lakh pilgrims every day in addition to the regular crowd. Moreover, an additional 80 acres of land have been utilised for vehicle parking.'
The Collector said that sanitation workers, police personnel, and volunteers have been deployed to manage crowd movement, maintain hygiene, and ensure the safety of pilgrims.

BENGALURU: An IndiGo flight from Guwahati to Chennai made an unscheduled landing at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on the evening of 19 June after the pilot issued a Mayday call. The airline clarified that the call was related to 'low fuel' and not an emergency situation. Though the Mayday call was linked to the flight running low on fuel, it did send jitters among regular air travellers. Sources said that the flight was not carrying the required amount of diversion fuel, the minimum amount of fuel an aircraft must carry to safely divert to an alternate destination in case it cannot land at its intended destination. Speaking to TNIE, an IndiGo spokesperson confirmed, 'The Mayday was Fuel Mayday; a fuel-related call, not caused by any emergency. It is a standard procedure to request landing priority when fuel levels reach a certain low limit.' The flight, 6E-6764, which departed Guwahati at 4:40 p.m., was originally scheduled to land at Chennai Airport at 7:40 p.m. However, due to congestion and delayed landing clearance at Chennai, the aircraft was diverted to Bengaluru. While approaching KIA, the pilot issued a Fuel Mayday to Air Traffic Control (ATC) to ensure priority landing. The flight landed safely at Bengaluru at 8:15 p.m. All 168 passengers were safely deboarded and provided with refreshments during the stopover. IndiGo confirmed that the aircraft resumed its journey after a delay of two hours and assured that at no point was passenger safety at risk.

Chardham Yatra draws 33 lakh pilgrims, adds Rs 306 crore to Uttarakhand economy
DEHRADUN: The Chardham Yatra, the backbone of Uttarakhand's economy, has seen a festive surge in footfall, with pilgrim numbers crossing 33 lakh. The Kedarnath Yatra alone has generated Rs 306 crore revenue in just 48 days. Yogendra Gangwar, Joint Director of the Tourism Division at the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Council, told TNIE, "Since the opening of Baba Kedarnath Dham's portals for pilgrims on May 2, until Thursday evening, the number of devotees who have visited Baba Kedar has exceeded 11.64 lakh." "If we calculate the average for the past month, approximately 24,000 pilgrims are arriving daily for darshan at Kedarnath Dham," he added. Dr. Ashish Rawat, Chief Veterinary Officer, told TNIE, 'The Kedarnath Dham Yatra is one of the most arduous religious pilgrimages in the country. After traversing a challenging 20-kilometer trek, pilgrims finally get to behold the 11th Jyotirlinga nestled in the lap of the Himalayas.' 'Horses and mules play an extremely crucial role in this difficult pedestrian pilgrimage. As of Wednesday, 228,665 pilgrims reached Kedarnath Dham via horses and mules, generating an income of approximately Rs 67.5 crore," he added. Rahul Chaubey, Nodal Officer for Kedarnath Heli Service, which operates as a lifeline for elderly pilgrims, stated, "This year, eight companies are operating heli-services from nine helipads. By Thursday, 49,294 pilgrims had reached Kedarnath by helicopter, generating an income of ₹61 crore from helicopter fares." For the convenience of elderly pilgrims on the Kedarnath trekking route, dandi-kandi (palanquin/porter services) are operated. Over 7,000 dandi-kandi operators are registered for this year's pilgrimage.

Five ‘Ironman' titles under his belt, but Sam is game for more
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: At his workplace, this unassuming 42-year-old may pass off as just another corporate employee stuck in the rut of a 'nine to six' job. However, not many would know that Suresh Sam Chandy is actually a five-time winner of the coveted 'Ironman' title, considered the benchmark of endurance and fitness. Sam recorded his latest win at the South America edition of the Ironman triathlon held at Florianopolis in Brazil earlier this month. The Thiruvananthapuram native has now set his eyes on Ironman's Africa edition, his final step in his quest to clinch the title from all six continents where the triathlon is held. Organised by the World Triathlon Corporation, the Ironman race requires participants to complete a 3.8 km swim, a 180.2 km-long bicycle ride and a 42.2 km run on the trot within 17 hours. Besides South America, Sam has won Ironman titles in Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia (Oceania). Notably, the last three titles were won in an unbelievably short span of 58 days. 'In the Ironman South America edition, the most gruelling part was cycling. I do not use an aero-bar on my bike unlike other participants who rely on it to reduce drag and improve aerodynamics. The strong and icy headwinds and cross winds caught me unawares. Still, I was able to cover 180 km within eight hours,' Sam told TNIE. Sam, who finished his latest race with an overall time of 15:56 hours, believes his rigorous training during the past one-and-a-half years after winning in Australia helped him a lot. 'Ensuring proper fitness in between my regular job is very tough and demanding. However it's a small price to pay to win the coveted title each time,' said Sam, a US-certified public accountant with EY.
