Account executive loses over RM100,000 to phone scam
JOHOR BAHRU: An account executive lost RM139,565 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate impersonating a police officer.
Muar deputy police chief Supt Muhammad Aidil Roneh Abdullah said the 40-year-old woman first received a call in January from someone claiming to be an insurance company representative, accusing her of being involved in a fraudulent claim.
'The call was then transferred to another individual posing as a police officer from the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters, who claimed the victim was linked to 21 police reports involving a non-existent investment scheme and that an arrest warrant had been issued,' he said in a statement today.
Muhammad Aidil said the victim was instructed to open a bank account for investigation purposes and to deposit funds into it to resolve the matter.
Convinced by the claims, the woman shared her bank card details and made 30 transactions between Jan 31 and June 17.
'The victim realised she had been scammed after all the phone numbers that had contacted her became unreachable.
'The woman filed a police report yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code,' he said.

Retiree's RM535k gone in Facebook 'investment' scam
JOHOR BARU: – A private sector retiree lost RM535,766 after allegedly falling victim to an online investment scam promoted via a Facebook advertisement. Seri Alam police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said police received a report from a 57-year-old local man on Tuesday, who claimed losses exceeding RM500,000. He said the victim had come across a share investment advertisement on Facebook on March 13 that promised lucrative returns within a short time, and clicked on the provided link out of interest. "Subsequently, the victim made 26 payment transactions into five different bank accounts between March 13 and June 5, totalling RM535,766. The victim was also asked to make additional payments to withdraw the so-called 'investment profits', but those requests were never fulfilled," he said in a statement yesterday. Mohd Sohaimi said the victim only realised he had been duped after repeated attempts to recover the investment funds proved futile. "Preliminary checks via the CCID's 'Semak Mule' platform found that all five accounts involved had a total of 22 police reports linked to investment scams," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and police are also looking into the possible involvement of mule account holders.

12-year-old disabled girl rescued after car theft in Penang
BUTTERWORTH: A 12-year-old disabled girl was rescued unharmed in Butterworth after the vehicle she was left in was stolen from her father's workshop in Penaga late yesterday afternoon. Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said the incident occurred at about 5.30pm, when the girl's mother briefly exited the car to deliver engine oil to her husband's workshop. He said the vehicle's engine had been left running with the child inside. "Upon returning, the mother was shocked to find the car and her daughter gone. "A search was immediately launched by the family with help from a friend. "Unable to locate the vehicle, the mother used the Life360 app to track her mobile phone, which was with the girl, and traced the location to Bagan Lalang, Butterworth. "Police from the district's Criminal Investigation Department, assisted by officers from the Butterworth police station, responded swiftly and successfully apprehended a male suspect in his 60s," he said in a statement at midnight today. Anuar said, fortunately, the girl was found safe and uninjured. "She was immediately brought to Kepala Batas Hospital for a thorough medical examination," he said. Anuar said preliminary checks revealed the suspect had a record of seven criminal offences and eleven drug-related offences. The case is being investigated under Section 379A (theft of a motor vehicle) and Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Penal Code. Authorities are continuing their investigation to complete the case file.
