Perpetual reclaims HS boys volleyball crown; Arellano wins first girls' trophy

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA reclaimed the NCAA boys high school volleyball crown after outlasting Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Game 3 of the finals, 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-9, on Sunday in the NCAA Season 100 volleyball fiesta at the Filoil Centre in San Juan.
John Weihanan Lat led the Junior Altas with 15 attacks, six blocks, and an ace, while Zyro Ornos had 19 points. Team captain Charles Conciina distributed the ball well with 19 excellent sets, while Nathan Paul Ciriaco and Gabriel Cyrus Macatumo had 16 points. Resty Santos had 12 points.
Jessel Nimo had 22 points, while Nhasty Bajaladia had 18 points for the Squires.
This is Perpetual's 13th title in high school volleyball, and according to head coach Sandy Rita is his seventh under his belt.
'Para sa amin talaga,' Rieta told GMA News Online.
'Medyo may gigil din sa sarili ko, siyempre kailangan kong maibalik. Confident din ako ngayon na aabot sa finals 'yung players ko.'
[It was really for us... I had some eagerness also myself, of course I wanted to get it back. I'm also confident now that my players are in the finals.]
In the girls' division, Arellano University claimed its first title after beating Perpetual in Game 2 of the finals last May 31, 21-25, 15-25, 25-16, 25-11, 15-4.
Samantha Maranan erupted fof 31 points from 30 attacks and an ace, while Catherine Cau and Jasmine Galaga had 19 and 14 points, respectively.
Sherrie Rose Acosta was the only double-digit scorer for Perpetual with 20 points.
?'First time namin eh and lahat kami nagtulungan so worth it naman lahat,' Maranan said.
[It was our first time and we all helped each other and it was all worth it.]

No Bolden, Guillou in Filipinas roster for AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers
World Cup players Sarina Bolden and Katrina Guillou's names were not listed in the roster released by the Philippine Women's National Football Team Filipinas for the upcoming AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers which will be held from June 23 to July 5. Among the players included are Sara Eggesvik, Kaya Hawkinson, Charisa Lemoran, Isabella Pasion, Alexa Pino, Quinley Quezada, Jaclyn Sawicki, and Ava Villapando for midfielders. Forwards include Carleigh Frilles, Nina Mathelus, Chandler Mcdaniel, Meryll Serrano, Dionesa Tolentin, and Chayse Ying, while Angela Beard, Malea Cesar, Rhea Chan, Jessika Cowart, Janae Defazio, Hali Long, Katana Norman, and Sofia Wunsoh compose the defenders' pool. Gabrielle Baker, Olivia Mcdaniel, Nina Meollo, and Inna Palacios are the goalkeepers for the upcoming tournament. The Philippines is pooled with Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, and Cambodia which will host all Group G events. The team which will end up on top of the Group G standings will advance to the AFC Women's Asian Cup. USA Volleyball's Erik Shoji comes out as queer
USA Volleyball team captain and two-time Olympic bronze medalist Erik Shoji last Saturday came out as queer. According to the UN Girls' Education Initiative website, ''queer' is an umbrella term that is commonly used to refer to or describe people who are not heterosexual or are not cisgender. Further, 'queer' is also used to refer to approaches that oppose heteronormative ways of thinking and being.' In a video on Shoji's social media account, the libero said it took a long time before the Hawaii native accepted it. 'I am here to tell the world today that I am queer. It feels scary but freeing at the same time,' Shoji said. 'I think personal acceptance takes a while. For me, it took a long time and I'm working through that still every day, but I think I'm stronger, more confident, and more sure of myself than I've ever been, and I feel that given who I am and the platform that I have that this is my moment and I'm so excited to move forward after this.' Shoji said that by coming out, the three-time Olympian hopes to be a role model and is now more excited to know 'where life is going to take me and who I am and what I can bring to my family, my team, my friends, and those around me.' The libero also hopes to 'inspire people to be themselves and to be personable, be kind, be nice, and to love life.' 'Part of me hopes that the world keeps spinning, the volleyball community stays amazing and accepting and growing. I feel so good saying what I'm saying and I know that I'm genuine in what I'm saying and I believe in myself and I believe in others and I believe that life will keep going and it'll be great and my friends will be there, my family will be there, my team will be there, and I'm gonna continue to be myself and I'm so excited for that.'
