Efforts to improve safety at notorious level crossing stepped up
Despite clear signage, full barriers, lights, audible alarms and CCTV monitoring, Network Rail Scotland said incidents of misuse "continue to occur".
So far this year, there have been 18 recorded incidents, including people crossing despite warnings of an approaching train. In 2024-25, there were 32 incidents in total, and 54 in 2023-24.

As part of International Level Crossing Awareness Day, a worldwide initiative marked this year on Thursday, June 5, Network Rail level crossing teams are collaborating with British Transport Police to raise awareness about level crossing safety. The action aims to remind the public of simple steps that can prevent serious accidents.
Innis Keith, health, safety and environment director at Network Rail Scotland, said: 'Level crossings are safe when used correctly, but misuse can have devastating consequences.
'At Broughty Ferry, we've seen too many potentially dangerous situations. That's why it's important we work together to raise awareness and help people understand how to stay safe.
'It's about protecting lives and making sure no family faces the heartbreak of a preventable tragedy. Staying alert and taking a few careful steps can be the difference between getting home safely and not making it home at all.'
Trespass sign at Broughty Ferry level crossing (Image: Network Rail Scotland) Inspector Ashley Forbes of British Transport Police said: 'There is simply no excuse for misusing a level crossing and ignoring safety procedures, and the consequences of trying to beat the system or failing to pay attention are severe.
'You not only put your own life at risk when you fail to treat a level crossing with respect, but also the lives of the passengers and staff of the oncoming train.
'The railways can be incredibly dangerous, which is why people need to do the right thing when using railway level crossings. If you see anyone failing to adhere to the safety procedures and putting themselves and others in harm's way, I urge you to report it to us by texting 61016 or by calling us. Always dial 999 in an emergency.'

The group had been on the concourse between Kings Cross Station and St Pancras International when the officer told the religious group, 'It's so loud'. Preachers have previously had run-ins with police – one preacher who was forcibly stopped and moved on by police for 'attracting a crowd' with his public speaking and singing was awarded £1,250. Dominic Muir, who runs Christian charities Now Believe and Jesus Fields, was preaching and singing Amazing Grace in Blandford, Dorset, on April 22, 2020, when the UK was in its first lockdown. A police officer asked him to move on and then grabbed him by the wrist to get him to leave. Dorset Police believe the officer used 'reasonable force', but they reached an out-of-court settlement paying Dominic £1,250 in damages and costs. Onlookers filmed the encounter, and a video shows the preacher speaking about the gospel on the back of a truck. CCTV released after man on Glasgow train assaulted and robbed
CCTV footage has been released after a man on Glasgow train assaulted and robbed. An image of a man wearing a blue and yellow Boca Juniors top on a ScotRail train has been published as the British Transport Police wish to speak to the person in connection with an assault. The incident took place on board a train between Glasgow Queen Street and Balloch near Clydebank at around 9pm on April 30 when a man was assaulted by another man who stole his backpack and fled the train at Clydebank. The person cops wish to speak to is described as white, aged in his late 30s or early 40s, around 5ft11, with medium brown hair. He was wearing grey jogging bottoms and a blue football top. Officers would urge the male or any members of the public who recognise him to contact police. Anyone with information is urged to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 with the reference 745 of 30 April 2025. Throughout the video, he incessantly asks to access the train's cafe bar despite the fact that it has already closed. 3 3 3 The chilling footage shows the passenger shouting at the staff member on the late-night London North Eastern Railway (LNER) train. Remaining calm, the train worker tries to reduce the tension by asking the passenger to sit. The worker can be heard saying: 'I'm just gonna ask you to take a seat - come on, let's take a seat.' The passenger then raised his voice, shouting 'I'm going to break your face. You're lucky' at the worker. Then, he waved his hand towards the managers while appearing to hold his mobile phone. In response, the manager said: 'Don't point that in my face. 'I need to close the café bar. Don't put that in my face please.' However, the passenger continued to be aggressive and shouted 'shut your mouth. Try it now'. The shocking event has been confirmed to have taken place on March 16, though the train's destination remains unknown. The Sun has contacted the British Transport Police and LNER for comment on the incident onboard the train. In a separate incident on board a train bound for King's Cross on July 2, 2024, another man can be seen shouting at a ticket collector. Meanwhile, the worker raises a hand to calm the man - prompting the passenger to accuse the railway worker of laying his "hands" on him. The company chose to release the footage as part of 'Rail Safety Week'. The week is aimed at supporting staff who have been victims of abuse by passengers, while promoting sensible behaviour for train users. The video surfaced just as news came in that a man was arrested in London for allegedly having a gun, whilst on a tube platform. Cops raced to Elm Park Underground station at 7am to arrest the 61-year-old. Investigations into the incident are now underway and police are appealing to witnesses for more information. A spokesperson for the police said: 'Officers were called just after 7am today (June 19) to Elm Park Underground station following reports of a man in possession of a firearm. "Officers attended, and a 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and taken into custody. 'Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016, or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 109 of 19 June.'
