Employers want to hire Gen Z workers who have knowledge of AI: ‘You were born into this shift'

New York Post4 days ago

The most valuable skill an employee can have in the digital age is… the ability to ask AI?
Titans of the tech industry have taken to social media and other public speaking engagements to reassure Gen-Z, the newest members of the workforce, that AI won't be detrimental to job availability — in fact, it might be able to aid in their employment.
'AI is changing everything, faster than most institutions, companies or curriculums can keep pace with. But no, that doesn't mean your education or potential is obsolete. It means we have to think differently about what growth and opportunity look like,' wrote LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman in a recent post on the platform.

'You were born into this shift. You're native to these tools in a way that older generations aren't. Lean into it. Teach others.'
5 'You are Generation AI,' LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman wrote online, addressing recent graduates.

'You don't have to become an engineer to use AI powerfully,' Hoffman advised. 'Think about how to apply it creatively, how to solve real problems with it, how to collaborate with it. One of your first reactions to any challenge should be 'How can I use AI to help me here?''

5 According to a study by KPMG and the University of Melbourne, 4 in 5 students use AI regularly in their studies.

Hoffman isn't the only one at his level who is optimistic about AI's influence on the workforce — other high-level tech execs offered similar thoughts about the future landscape of the job market.
5 On June 17, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy shared company-wide updates about the tech giant's use of AI.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy shared that the implementation of generative AI will likely 'reduce' the company's corporate workforce.

AI 'should change the way our work is done,' wrote Jassy in a memo distributed to employees and posted publicly.
'Those who embrace this change, become conversant in AI, help us build and improve our AI capabilities internally and deliver for customers, will be well-positioned to have high impact and help us reinvent the company,' he added.

Overall, the message coming from industry leaders is that being adaptive and willing to incorporate AI into current professional practices is the real key to being well-positioned for the future job market — but this idea is being obscured under encouraging niceties that are fed to Gen-Z.

'Whilst they may be at an advantage with their AI skills more so than previous generations, they will still need the practical, world-wise experience to flush out any AI inconsistencies and errors that older workers will possess,' Keith Arundale, a visiting fellow at the UK's Henley Business School, told Newsweek.
'Comfort without mastery can backfire. Gen Z's early exposure is an advantage, but it isn't a golden ticket,' agreed Fabian Stephany, assistant professor for AI and Work at the University of Oxford, in an interview with Newsweek.
5 Anthropic is the AI company, co-founded by Dario Amodei, responsible for the popular large language model (LLM) AI chatbot, Claude.

Despite the positive packaging that this potential employment crisis tends to be wrapped up in, some top tech figures remain skeptical.
Automation and increased usage of AI by large companies is 'going to happen in a small amount of time — as little as a couple of years or less,' Dario Amodei, CEO of AI company Anthropic, told Axios.
'We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming. I don't think this is on people's radar,' Amodei continued.
In reality, Gen-Z isn't necessarily better equipped to handle the demands of modern-day jobs just because of a generational familiarity with AI. They still need soft skills and the social abilities to properly navigate dilemmas that professional environments often pose — employers and industry leaders just tend to leave that part out.

Nobel laureate concerned about AI-generated image of black hole at the center of our galaxy

The monster black hole at the center of our galaxy is spinning at ear "top speed," according to a new artificial intelligence (AI) model. The model, trained partially on complex telescope data that was previously considered too noisy to be useful, aims to create the most detailed black hole images ever. However, based on the questionable quality of the data, not all experts are convinced that the AI model is accurate. "I'm very sympathetic and interested in what they're doing," Reinhard Genzel, an astrophysicist at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany and one of the winners of the 2020 Nobel Prize in physics, told Live Science. "But artificial intelligence is not a miracle cure." For decades, scientists have been trying to observe and characterize Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the heart of our galaxy. In May 2022, they unveiled the first-ever image of this enormous object, but there were still a number of questions, such as how it behaves. Now, an international team of scientists has attempted to harness the power of AI to glean more information about Sagittarius A* from data collected by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Unlike some telescopes, the EHT doesn't reside in a single location. Rather, it is composed of several linked instruments scattered across the globe that work in tandem. The EHT uses long electromagnetic waves — up to a millimeter in length — to measure the radius of the photons surrounding a black hole. However, this technique, known as very long baseline interferometry, is very susceptible to interference from water vapor in Earth's atmosphere. This means it can be tough for researchers to make sense of the information the instruments collect. "It is very difficult to deal with data from the Event Horizon Telescope," Michael Janssen, an astrophysicist at Radboud University in the Netherlands and co-author of the study, told Live Science. "A neural network is ideally suited to solve this problem." Janssen and his team trained an AI model on EHT data that had been previously discarded for being too noisy. In other words, there was too much atmospheric static to decipher information using classical techniques. Through this AI technique, they generated a new image of Sagittarius A*'s structure, and their picture revealed some new features. For example, the black hole appears to be spinning at "almost top speed," the researchers said in a statement, and its rotational axis also seems to be pointing toward Earth. Their results were published this month in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. Pinpointing the rotational speed of Sagittarius A* would give scientists clues about how radiation behaves around supermassive black holes and offer insight into the stability of the disk of matter around it. According to Genzel, the relatively low quality of the data going into the model could have biased it in unexpected ways. As a result, the new image may be somewhat distorted, he said, and shouldn't be taken at face value. In the future, Janssen and his team plan to apply their technique to the latest EHT data and measure it against real-world results. They hope this analysis will help to refine the model and improve future simulations. This story was provided by a sister site of

EZCORP Expands in Mexico with 40-Store Acquisition

EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW) is among the best small company stocks to invest in. EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW), with a market capitalization of $811.591 million, has announced the acquisition of 40 pawn stores across 13 Mexican states in a press release. This attempt to expand its global footprint positions the company well in the auto pawn segment, which is considered one of the fastest-growing sectors in Mexico's pawn industry. The purchased stores, functioning under the Monte Providencia and Tu Empeño Efectivo brands, provide conventional pawn loans and auto pawn transactions. EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW) assumed control of the management of seven additional Monte Providencia stores, with the anticipated completion of the purchase in the months ahead. An employee in a pawn store, counting jewelry and consumer electronics that were pawned. One of the company's standout strengths is its robust liquidity position, which has current assets exceeding short-term liabilities by a factor of four. This allows the giant to engage in more strategic transactions. Just recently, EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW) declared investments worth SEK 95 billion in Swedish AI infrastructure, marking it one of the largest AI investments by the alternative asset manager in Europe. EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW) is a Texas-based provider of pawn services in the United States and Latin America. With three main segments: U.S. Pawn, Latin America Pawn, and Other Investments, the company offers pawn loans and retails merchandise. Incorporated in 1989, the small-cap company is the go-to choice for short-term cash needs and quality pre-owned goods. While we acknowledge the potential of EZPW as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
