The secret to bowling the perfect strike, according to scientists

Bowling 's elusive perfect strike may no longer be a matter of intuition and experience.
A team of researchers from premier world institutions have developed a new physics-based model that can predict the precise conditions needed to knock down all ten pins in a single throw.
The study, published in AIP Advances, outlines how a set of six differential equations—based on Euler's equations for rotating rigid bodies—can be used to simulate a bowling ball's trajectory with exceptional precision. The equations describe the rotational motion of a rigid body in three-dimensional space.
The model, developed by researchers from Princeton, MIT, the University of New Mexico, Loughborough University and Swarthmore College allows them to plot the ideal placement and path of a bowling ball to achieve a strike under various conditions.
Curtis Hooper, one of the authors of the paper, said: 'The simulation model we created could become a useful tool for players, coaches, equipment companies and tournament designers.' He added, 'The ability to accurately predict ball trajectories could lead to the discoveries of new strategies and equipment designs.'
Bowling remains a highly popular sport in the United States, with more than 45 million participants annually and millions of dollars in prize money across professional tournaments.
Yet, despite its global reach and competitive stakes, a comprehensive model that accurately captures how a bowling ball behaves under different lane conditions has long remained out of reach.
Existing methods for predicting shot outcomes typically rely on statistical analysis of bowlers' past performances. However, such approaches often fail when there is even slight variation in an athlete's throw, and they rarely consider the physical dynamics of the ball and lane.
In contrast, the new model accounts for critical and often overlooked variables, such as the layer of oil applied to bowling lanes.
These oil patterns—intended to reduce friction and guide the ball—vary greatly in shape and thickness across tournaments, influencing how the ball curves and behaves. As this oil is rarely spread uniformly, bowlers often must adapt their strategies to suit each unique pattern, a challenge the model directly addresses.
'Our model provides a solution to both of these problems by constructing a bowling model that accurately computes bowling trajectories when given inputs for all significant factors that may affect ball motion,' said Mr Hooper.
'A 'miss-room' is also calculated to account for human inaccuracies which allows bowlers to find their own optimal targeting strategy.'
Creating the model was not without difficulty.
Researchers had to mathematically capture the motion of a bowling ball that, although nearly spherical, is slightly asymmetrical. An even greater challenge lay in translating the model's complex physics into practical guidance for athletes and coaches—using terms and measurements compatible with existing bowling accessories and tools.
The research team plans to refine the model further by including additional variables such as lane irregularities and by collaborating with industry professionals to tailor its application to real-world play.

Relying on the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT to help you write an essay could be linked to cognitive decline, a new study reveals. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab studied the impact of ChatGPT on the brain by asking three groups of people to write an essay. One group relied on ChatGPT, one group relied on search engines, and one group had no outside resources at all. The researchers then monitored their brains using electroencephalography, a method which measures electrical activity. The team discovered that those who relied on ChatGPT — also known as a large language model — had the 'weakest' brain connectivity and remembered the least about their essays, highlighting potential concerns about cognitive decline in frequent users. 'Over four months, [large language model] users consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels,' the study reads. 'These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of [large language model] reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI's role in learning.' The study also found that those who didn't use outside resources to write the essays had the 'strongest, most distributed networks.' While ChatGPT is 'efficient and convenient,' those who use it to write essays aren't 'integrat[ing] any of it' into their memory networks, lead author Nataliya Kosmyna told Time Magazine. Kosmyna said she's especially concerned about the impacts of ChatGPT on children whose brains are still developing. 'What really motivated me to put it out now before waiting for a full peer review is that I am afraid in 6-8 months, there will be some policymaker who decides, 'let's do GPT kindergarten,'' Kosmyna said. 'I think that would be absolutely bad and detrimental. Developing brains are at the highest risk.' But others, including President Donald Trump and members of his administration, aren't so worried about the impacts of ChatGPT on developing brains. Trump signed an executive order in April promoting the integration of AI into American schools. 'To ensure the United States remains a global leader in this technological revolution, we must provide our Nation's youth with opportunities to cultivate the skills and understanding necessary to use and create the next generation of AI technology,' the order reads. 'By fostering AI competency, we will equip our students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to and thrive in an increasingly digital society.' Kosmyna said her team is now working on another study comparing the brain activity of software engineers and programmers who use AI with those who don't. 'The results are even worse,' she told Time Magazine.

But there's one university right here in our city that is just as esteemed as the likes of Yale or Princeton. In fact, in a new global list of the world's best university, our very own University of Melbourne outranked both of those well-known institutions. Feel that city pride! The prestigious QS World University Rankings for 2026 have just dropped, revealing which institutions stand in the best stead for the year ahead. Two Australian universities cracked the top 20 for yet another year, out of more than 1,500 institutions from around the world assessed for the 2026 rankings, including 36 from Australia. The top five were pretty similar to last year, with MIT holding onto first place with a perfect score of 100, followed by Imperial College London, Stanford, Harvard and Cambridge. Australia's highest-ranked institution was the University of Melbourne, which landed 19th on the global list. While it slipped six spots from placing 13th in 2025, its overall score actually rose 1.9 points to 90.8 – thanks to improved ratings in seven of the nine ranking indicators. The uni earned a near-perfect 99.7 for academic reputation (the highest in Australia) and also ranked first in the country for employer reputation and sustainability. This university is consistently praised as the best in the country, and was also named as one of the top ten most sustainable universities worldwide last year. Just one position behind was the University of New South Wales (UNSW), which held onto its place among the top 20 universities in the world for the third consecutive year. Its overall score of 90.7 saw it drop one position from 19th in 2025, but it maintained impressive ratings for academic reputation (96.3) and ranked equal 12th in the world for sustainability. Of the 36 Australian institutions assessed, UNSW placed first in the employment outcome and international research network categories. Overall, two-thirds of Australia's ranked universities dropped in this year's rankings. Meanwhile, only seven climbed higher, including Monash University's jump from 37th to 36th. Now, the QS World University Rankings for 2026 have just dropped, revealing which institutions stand in the best stead for the year ahead.
