Why three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto will retire after the 2026 Winter Olympics

TOKYO (AP) — Kaori Sakamoto, the three-time figure skating world champion, will retire after next year's 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, she said Friday.
The 25-year-old Japanese star won an Olympic bronze medal in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and took the silver medal in the world championships in March with gold to American Alysa Liu.
Sakamoto acknowledged that age is catching up with her.
'I feel like I have less than a year left,' the Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted her as saying in Kobe, Japan. 'I'll be 29 at the following Olympics (in 2030), which is out of the question. I'll try to bring things to a close the year I turn 26.'

World Curling tightens sweeping rules, bans firmer broom foams ahead of Olympics

PERTH – World Curling has tightened its sweeping equipment rules heading into the Olympic season. The move, announced Friday, follows concern over firmer broom foams that many players said gave sweepers too much control. Several high-profile models — including some from Goldline, BalancePlus and Hardline — are now banned. Only brushes with less-firm foam are approved for competition, effective immediately. World Curling said the decision followed extensive consultation with players, manufacturers and ice experts, as well as a sweep-testing exercise at the Morris Curling Club in Manitoba. Officials say it's a first step, with long-term reviews and equipment standards still in development. With the new regulations, the BalancePlus RS with Firm 2.0 foam, Goldline Impact with Evader or Pursuer foam, Hardline Ice Pad with Competitive foam, and SmartBroom by Curling Tools with current foam are no longer approved for play. ULM drops women's tennis amid athletic department financial constraints

MONROE, La. (AP) — The women's tennis program at Louisiana-Monroe has been disbanded because of financial constraints at the university's athletic department. Athletics Director John Hartwell announced this week that the decision stemmed from 'increased operational and infrastructure costs' and will help ULM athletics 'to continue progress towards balancing its budget' while maintaining an NCAA-required minimum of 16 NCAA Division I sports. 'Discontinuing a sport is never an easy decision, nor one that we take lightly,' Hartwell said. 'We know this is tough for our student-athletes and our coaches, who have poured so much into our tennis program.' Hartwell said ULM will honor the scholarships of those who want to complete their degrees without transferring elsewhere. He said his administration also will help those tennis players who want to continue to compete to pursue opportunities at other schools. 'We will prioritize as smooth a transition as possible for our student-athletes,' Hartwell said. As women's tennis athletes graduate or transfer, scholarship funds that had been dedicated to them will be redirected to other remaining women's sports teams at ULM. ___ AP tennis:

3-time America's Cup champion Peter Burling joins Luna Rossa ahead of 2027 regatta off Naples

MILAN (AP) — Three-time America's Cup champion Peter Burling has joined Luna Rossa ahead of the 2027 regatta off Naples, the Italian team announced Friday. Burling left Team New Zealand in April after nearly a decade in which he steered his home boats to three consecutive America's Cup trophies. Luna Rossa said Burling 'is ready to contribute both in sailing performance and technical development as the team gears up for the next America's Cup campaign.' Barring a change in protocol concerning team changes, Burling likely won't be able to be aboard Luna Rossa and will have to remain on shore. Luna Rossa CEO Max Sirena praised Burling's 'exceptional sailing talent and his sportsmanship.' 'Even though his exact role has yet to be defined, he will certainly be part of the sailing team, reinforcing Luna Rossa's core leadership group and contributing to key areas of our development program,' Sirena said. Burling is a former Olympic sailing gold medalist and nine-time world champion. He became Team New Zealand helmsman in 2017 and at 26 steered the boat to a 7-1 victory over Oracle Team USA in Bermuda. That made him the youngest helmsman to win the America's Cup. Burling was skipper and helmsman when Team New Zealand successfully defended the America's Cup in 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand, and 2024 in Barcelona. 'I've always loved racing against Luna Rossa and now to join this iconic team is a real honor,' Burling said. 'The innovation and competitiveness they bring to the Cup has always inspired me. I'm grateful for the warm welcome and I'm looking forward to working hard alongside a world-class team, doing my part to help win Luna Rossa's first America's Cup.' ___ AP sports:
