Challinor criticises Stockport fans who left during shootout
Stockport County boss Dave Challinor has criticised fans who left midway through the penalty shootout they lost to Leyton Orient in Wednesday's League One play-off semi-final second leg at Edgeley Park. The Hatters were defeated 4-1 on penalties by Orient after the second leg finished 1-1 and 3-3 on aggregate.Jack Diamond saw his penalty saved, while Ryan Rydel struck the post in the shootout. Some fans had left before Orient struck the winning spot-kick."I get that there's disappointment. No-one's more disappointed than how much we are. There are players in the dressing room where it will live with them for the rest of their lives," Challinor told BBC Radio Manchester. "They deserve better than people walking out. Maybe they thought the game was over."Challinor has led Stockport to two promotions during his time with the club, taking them from the National League to the third tier.Prior to this season's play-off campaign, they ended the season in third position, missing out on automatic promotion by five points."If the players walked off with five minutes to go, we wouldn't be in the position we're in. That is a bit of a frustration," he added."I get people may want to get away and avoid traffic and things, but our season has come to an end and I think it would have been nice and justified for people to have stayed in."The majority did, don't get me wrong, and I massively thank them for that, to appreciate what the players have done because the effort they've given for nine months has been incredible."
Stockport had prior experience of losing on penalties in the play-offs, having lost to Carlisle United on spot-kicks at Wembley in the 2023 League Two final.Challinor's side went on to win the fourth tier title the following season, but he does not feel they will have things all their way in 2025-26."I don't in any way think it will be as easy as that. To go back to the play-off game against Carlisle, we were hampered by injuries. I felt in that season we deserved to be promoted, we were one of the best teams," he said."Unfortunately we've missed out at this stage. Football is ruthless, it moves on quickly."A big summer awaits for the club as they look to make changes to their line-up in order to remain competitive next season.Challinor said: "Obviously there are players out of contract and we need to look at our squad. "There will be players at the club whose opportunities have been limited this year and will move on and it's my job to shape our squad in order to give ourselves the opportunity of being as successful next year as we have been this year."There certainly won't be an understanding from my perspective, as I imagine there will be from a lot of other people, that says that because we finished third this year that we'll just happily waltz to an automatic spot next year and get promoted."We've got to be better than this year not to stand still. And that becomes all of our jobs to make sure that happens."

Royal Ascot Jockey FLOORED by horse moments after winning race as King Charles III watches on in shock
James Doyle was shockingly floored by runner Lazzat as he celebrated their win on the final day of Royal Ascot. Doyle claimed victory with the French four-year-old in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes to complete a double after Humidity's win in the Chesham Stakes earlier on Saturday. But the jockey's celebrations were cut short after the 9-2 winner unshipped him moments after striding to victory. Lazzat, who is trained by Jerome Reynier and part-owned by the Emir of Qatar, then set off freely around the track, wildly galloping into the distance. Ascot staff desperately tried to chase Lazzat down but were unable to stop the four-year-old, who clearly had lots of energy left to burn. He was eventually retrieved and led to the winner's enclosure. "It's not a matador" 😆 Lazzat wants to continue the #RoyalAscot celebrations without James Doyle 😅 — ITV Racing (@itvracing) June 21, 2025 It came just moments after they held off favourite Satono Reve by just half a length to deny a first Japanese-trained winner at Royal Ascot and seal a first French win of the 2025 meeting. Doyle, 37, was unhurt despite being flung to the floor and laughed about it during his interview with ITV. Speaking after his win, he said: 'Trying to flash the sheet at him and he went around, but yeah, what can you say? 'I can't take any credit for this at all. Jerome and his team, they know all about him. 'His jockey from before, his young jockey in France, did a great job bringing him through the ranks. He also rode him in Australia when he ran such a good race in the Golden Eagle. We had all bases covered and I have to say that Jerome was very confident. 'He was saying all week: "Don't worry about the ground, he's fine". We mapped the pace out and I just thought: 'If I end up winning, I end up winning'. He [Reynier] said: "Don't worry, he won't stop". It worked out perfectly. 'I could feel him [Satono Reve] coming, but you won't get a more genuine horse than this. He really pinned his ears back when he joined me and he was always going to fend it off.' 'It does help when you get a double on the first day, you can just relax into it. If I had a pound for every time someone said to me: "That's it, the pressure is off"... but it's completely the opposite.

Jack Draper shares his tonsillitis struggle as Queen's campaign comes to an end
Jack Draper revealed he was suffering with tonsillitis after making an angry exit from Queen's Club. The British number one smashed his racket, damaging a digital advertising hoarding and grazing his knee, as his semi-final against Jiri Lehecka slipped away from him. Draper explained he was low on energy due to the illness and was getting angry in a bid to gee himself up. But when world number 30 Lehecka fizzed a backhand past him to break for 6-5 in the deciding set, the 23-year-old exploded with rage. 'It was bit of everything, really,' he said. 'The way I was sort of playing at times. Obviously the fact that I've worked so hard to get myself in that position. I really tried to get myself up, get the energy going. 'When you see that ball go past you on that point, you know, it's very tough to see yourself breaking in the next game, although I tried my best on that. 'I don't condone that behaviour, but at the same time, that's kind of where I was at today. 'I was trying to use everything I could. I tried to compete every ball. But in the end, anger just spilled over a little bit too much.' Draper had sounded under the weather earlier in the week and discovered he had tonsillitis on Friday. 'I haven't felt good all week,' he added. 'I'm proud of the way I went about things, considering, but it's tough, because you're in a position where you're in a professional sport. 'You're an entertainer, an athlete, and you have no choice. No one cares, you know. So you've just got to go out there and do the best you can. I'm proud of that. I gave myself a chance. 'Today's probably the worst I've felt. Did I think about withdrawing? No, not at all. I'm in the semi-finals at Queen's. I'd probably go on court with a broken leg. I wouldn't have pulled out for anything. 'So I went out there, gave all I had, and I can be very proud of that. And also, it's not an excuse. It's just the way I feel. 'I lost today because I lost to a better tennis player. He was better than me in the key moments. He served better. I think he was a bit braver at times.' It has still been a successful week for Draper, who will now take a few days off to recover in time for Wimbledon, where he will be seeded fourth thanks to his run in west London. Draper dug deep impressively to level the match after dropping the first set, but Lehecka, regularly firing down serves touching 140mph, was stronger down the finishing straight. The 23-year-old became the first Czech to reach the final at Queen's since Ivan Lendl in 1990 after a 6-4 4-6 7-5 victory.
