Southwest Miami-Dade brush fire disrupts travelers as flames, smoke force major road closures
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service are still trying to put out a wildfire that sparked up over the weekend in southwestern Miami-Dade County.
The fire shut down Southwest 8th Street since Saturday afternoon and has since reopened. Meanwhile, Krome Avenue from US-27 to Tamiami Trail is still closed.
Road closures are impacting people's weekend plans
Mary said she had an appointment at 8 a.m. to visit her relative at the Everglades Reentry Center Prison. But cones and the Florida Highway Patrol had closed off her only way to get there on Southwest 8th Street.
"Ain't telling me nothing, but I knew I can't go through that scene," she said.
CBS News Miami told her why: It's a forest fire that has been burning since Saturday night. It had burned through 450 acres as of Sunday afternoon.
Smoke was visible in the morning as MDFR kept putting out hot spots from the air. Mary said she had to schedule her visit at the prison a week in advance, and now she said she likely will have to reschedule.
"We left home really early — six o'clock this morning," Mary said. "We get down here and we get in a line."
Southwest 8th Street opened around 10 a.m. That was good news for airboat tours since that's the only way to get to them. One owner told CBS News Miami that if the road was closed any longer, it would have caused problems for those with rides scheduled.
FHP only allowed people through if they lived nearby or were working in the area.
James Millings had planned to take his family visiting from Georgia on a fishing trip in the Florida Everglades. But his only way in was closed off.
"Too bad," Millings said. "I was hoping to take back a whole cooler full of fish."
Millings had to settle for fishing at a creek next to the blockade until the road opened. He stayed optimistic while waiting.
"At least the smoke isn't coming this way because my wife has asthma," Millings said.
Southwest 8th Street is open again, but fire rescue personnel are still urging people with respiratory problems to stay away.
The fire happened near the Krome Detention Center for immigration and customs enforcement detainees. The agency said the fire didn't cause any evacuations.

South Florida facing possible showers, high heat this weekend
The NEXT Weather team is tracking another hot and humid weekend across South Florida with morning and some afternoon rain storms moving ashore. A few rain showers will push through Miami-Dade county starting around noon and lasting through early afternoon on Saturday. The added moisture combined with the real temperatures in the upper 80s across most of the region will drive the "feels like temperatures" to near the triple digits. For most of South Florida, it will feel like the upper 90s until the early evening hours. As we prepare to celebrate the Panther's back-to-back Stanley Cup wins, we will need to pack a poncho when heading to the parade. We'll likely see rain showers move ashore in Fort Lauderdale for several hours before the parade starts. Unfortunately, for the 200,000 expected spectators lining-up along the parade route, they will get wet. The good news is the rain will move out before the parade starts unlike last year. NEXT week looks like a continuation of the mostly dry and humid stretch we've been dealing with for several days.

The heat is on in North Texas temperatures as the heat index hits the triple digits
Hot and windy for the next few days across North Texas Hot and windy for the next few days across North Texas Hot and windy for the next few days across North Texas Happy first weekend of Summer! The heat is on, and the sun is shining. The clouds Saturday morning will dissipate gradually, and high temperatures will be in the mid-90s with winds from the south, gusting around 30 mph Saturday afternoon. The actual temperature is seasonably hot, but due to the abundance of moisture at the surface, the heat index value will be in the triple digits during the peak heating of the day. A few isolated showers and storms will be possible in the early evening for the southeastern counties this weekend, but most of North Texas will stay dry. A ridge of high pressure is dominating in the upper levels of the atmosphere, allowing for the heat and dry conditions to persist. This will be the case in the extended forecast. Highs in the mid-90s and a breezy southerly flow will be present over the next seven to 10 days. During the summer heat, be sure to take precautions if headed outdoors for an extended amount of time. Wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water and enjoy cooling off in the pool!

Deadly derecho leaves trail of damage as tornadoes, 100+ mph winds sweep across Northern Plains
ENDERLIN, N.D. -- A powerful derecho brought tornadoes and 100+ mph wind gusts across North Dakota and western Minnesota Friday night into Saturday morning, leaving at least three dead and a trail of damage and power outages. What Is A Derecho? Three people were killed when a tornado swept through the rural town of Enderlin, North Dakota, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office. Deputies received word that a home suffered significant damage from a tornado strike around 11:40 p.m. Friday. As emergency responders arrived at the scene, storm chasers notified them that they had found two people dead inside the home. Enderlin firefighters found the tornado had left a third person dead at another location. Another tornado was observed near Eckelson and Urbana. The supercell stayed north of Interstate 94, but some damage was reported by storm chasers. In addition, the squall line brought wind gusts well over hurricane-force strength. The NWS says a private weather station near Luverne, North Dakota clocked a gust of 111 mph around 12:45 a.m. Saturday and gusts reached 80-90 mph for more than an hour in Jamestown. Farther east as the storm crossed into Minnesota, the airport in Bemidji recorded a gust of 106 mph. An emergency manager there reported extensive damage from falling and uprooted trees on roofs and cars with people trapped. "There is extensive damage around the Bemidji area and much of southern Beltrami County," emergency managers wrote on Facebook. "Please do not travel unless it is an emergency. Many roads are blocked and there are a ton of power lines down. Unfortunately there is significant structure damage as well. We are responding to many gas leaks." Torrential rain resulted in flash flooding downtown Bemidji with vehicles becoming stalled, said Beltrami County emergency management spokesperson Christopher Muller. "Additional damage was reported in southeastern Beltrami County with thousands of trees blocking roadways." However, no injuries have been reported, Muller said. Over 80% of the county was without power at 8:30 a.m. CT, according to "Residents should plan for long-term power outages as significant infrastructure damage has occurred," Muller said. Overall, data from indicated that over 57,000 customers were without electricity in Minnesota at the peak of the outages, with another 30,000 people lost power in North article source: Deadly derecho leaves trail of damage as tornadoes, 100+ mph winds sweep across Northern Plains
