Hakam urges government to extend CJ Tengku Maimun, senior judges' term to uphold judicial reforms
KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — The National Human Rights Society of Malaysia (Hakam) has called for transparency and equal treatment in the extension of judicial tenures, expressing concern over reports of selective practices in granting extensions to senior Federal Court judges.
In a statement, Hakam highlighted that Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, and Federal Court judge Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan have not received the customary six-month extensions under Article 125(1) of the Federal Constitution despite their upcoming retirements.
'This is in stark contrast to extensions granted to Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, Chief Judge of Malaya Datuk Seri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, and Federal Court judges Tan Sri Harmindar Singh Dhaliwal, Datuk Zabariah Mohamad Yusof, and Datuk Hanipah Farikullah,' Hakam said.
The group raised concerns about what it described as a selective and opaque approach to judicial extensions, which it said undermines public confidence in the judiciary and threatens its independence.
'Malaysia's judiciary is at a pivotal juncture with nine Federal Court judges set to retire this year. The leadership of Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun, who has been instrumental in restoring public confidence in the judiciary, is essential during this critical period,' Hakam said.
Tengku Maimun, Malaysia's first female Chief Justice, has been lauded for her commitment to judicial independence and for presiding over landmark cases with integrity during her tenure under four prime ministers. Hakam also praised her efforts in advocating for judicial reforms to reduce executive influence in judicial appointments.
Similarly, Hakam commended Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Abang Iskandar and Justice Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan for their exceptional jurisprudence, independence, and adherence to constitutional principles.
The group urged the government to ensure consistency and transparency in judicial extensions, calling for clear criteria based on merit and experience rather than political considerations.
'Hakam calls upon the government to extend the tenures of Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun, Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Abang Iskandar, and Justice Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan under Article 125(1) of the Federal Constitution,' the statement read.
It also demanded transparency in the decision-making process for judicial appointments and extensions, emphasising that an independent judiciary is vital for democracy and human rights protection.
'The stability of our judiciary and public confidence in Malaysia's legal system depend on the fair and equal treatment of our most senior judges,' Hakam added.
The society said it would continue monitoring the situation and advocating for judicial independence as a fundamental pillar of Malaysia's constitutional democracy.

While the Suara Mahasiswa protest is focused on government accountability and alleged mismanagement of funds, Gammas said they will be demonstrating in support of the state leadership under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the GRS-PH coalition government. 'The main objectives of the gathering is to express support for our chief minister and the GRS-PH government to continue leading Sabah, as they have shown strong commitment to student and youth welfare,' they said. They outlined several benefits such as the Sentosa one-off RM300 assistance for students studying in Sabah, the Budi programme offering RM1,500–2,000 in cash aid for qualified tertiary education students, the Subfly flight ticket subsidy programme, public scholarships amounting to RM50 million and laptop assistance among others. The group also voiced strong support for the monarchical institution in Sabah, claiming it is a unifying force in a multicultural state and criticising what it sees as attempts by Peninsular-based political actors to undermine it. They said they submitted their notice of the rally to the Kota Kinabalu police on June 16. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally was given the greenlight by police on June 18. They had announced their rally last month. The rally is expected to begin on Saturday at 1.00pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Their demands include action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms for the anti-corruption commission and suspension of individuals accused of corruption. The rallies coincide with the 74th official birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri tomorrow morning.

Outgoing IGP Razarudin retires after 42 years, urges creation of dedicated police ministry
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Outgoing Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain today handed over his duties to his successor, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, marking the end of a 42-year career with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). The official handover ceremony, held at the Dewan Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Hashim in Pulapol Kuala Lumpur, also saw the appointment of Datin Sri Munirah Che Rose as the new chairperson of the Police Family Association (PERKEP) Malaysia. Razarudin congratulated Khalid on his appointment as the 15th Inspector-General of Police, expressing confidence in Khalid's leadership and integrity in taking the force to greater heights. From 300 to 1,000 schools: PM credits govt-private sector unity for Madani education push
PUTRAJAYA, June 20 — PUTRAJAYA, June 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today hailed the government's national school transformation initiative as a resounding success, with nearly 1,000 schools now participating – far exceeding the original target of 300. Speaking at the Sekolah Angkat Malaysia Madani event here, Anwar praised the Education Ministry, other government agencies, and corporate partners for their collective contributions. Calling the achievement 'extraordinary', Anwar said it was made possible through strong collaboration between the government, private sector, and local communities under the Madani framework. 'The government and private sector in Malaysia are amazing and this is an extraordinary achievement,' he said at the Sekolah Angkat Malaysia Madani event held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre. Expressing his thanks, Anwar named Petronas, TNB, Telekom Malaysia and Sime Darby for being among the earliest corporations to respond to his government's push to improve education in Malaysia. 'As we all know, we can't move forward without the readiness and acceptance of the public. That is the plan for the next 10 years. 'We wanted to launch with 300 members, now, with the way the government and private sector in Malaysia are working together, we've reached 1,000 schools. So congratulations and thank you,' he said. Under the Madani school adoption programme, government-linked companies and wholly private firms pledge to contribute financially to schools in need, especially those in need of infrastructure support. Anwar said that the private sector's participation allows the government to focus on building new schools, roads, health facilities and more. 'Once we get this programme running it would be great to have the CEO or executives visit these schools, say twice a year, spend an hour or two to talk with the kids. 'Expose them to the world, work and truths. That way, they will be encouraged and have a role model to look up to,' he added.
