Vegetable vendors by day, sellers of stolen SUVs at night: Delhi cops bust auto-lifter gang

They sold vegetables by day and sold stolen luxury cars by night. This inter-state auto-lifting racket was running smoothly till the Delhi Police Crime Branch swooped in.
They arrested four Punjab-based receivers and recovered 21 high-end vehicles — including Fortuners, Thars, and Cretas — all bearing fake number plates, forged registration certificates, and tampered chassis and engine numbers, police said Tuesday.
The crackdown followed weeks of surveillance and pattern analysis, said police. Investigators noticed that the gang's operations were well-oiled and peaked around midnight, targeting luxury vehicles, which were stolen in a matter of minutes and moved to Punjab, especially its border districts.
On May 7, based on a tip-off, a police team intercepted a stolen blue Baleno on the DND Flyway en route to the KMP expressway. The vehicle, bearing fake plates, was reported stolen from South Delhi's Saket. The two men inside — Avtar Singh (40) and Harpreet Singh (32) — were nabbed. A forged registration certificate was also seized from them, said police.
During questioning, the duo admitted to being long-time receivers of stolen vehicles, which they sold across Amritsar and Ludhiana after modifying the cars and forging documents.
They named their suppliers and admitted to involvement in 15-20 similar transactions. Police subsequently took them on a 10-day remand and launched raids in Punjab's Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts, leading to the arrest of two more accused — Paramdeep of Ludhiana and Manpreet of Ferozepur.
Police said their probe revealed a consistent modus operandi: the gang purchased stolen high-end vehicles for Rs 4-5 lakh each, tampered with identification numbers, generated fake registration papers, and resold the cars as legitimate all over Punjab.
The accused came from varied backgrounds.
Avtar Singh, a former property dealer turned vegetable vendor, had previously been arrested in Amritsar and was linked to over 10 vehicle recoveries.
Harpreet Singh, a BCA graduate with a stint in Cyprus as a pig farmer, turned to auto theft after returning to India.
Paramdeep once ran an auto-parts factory that collapsed during the pandemic, pushing him into illegal vehicle trading.
Manpreet, a civil engineer and former driver, also had two past arrests and a pending divorce case.
The recovered vehicles span across multiple police jurisdictions in Delhi and beyond, including Saket, Shalimar Bagh, Tilak Nagar, Khyala, Dwarka, Keshav Puram, Vasant Vihar, and even Ghaziabad and Gurgaon.

Markets regulator Sebi has barred two individuals from the securities markets for three years and impounded illegal gains of over Rs 4.83 crore made by them for orchestrating a fraudulent scheme using out of the money (OTM) stock options to misappropriate funds from investors. Apart from the securities market ban, the regulator also slapped a penalty of Rs 25 lakh each on Shivprasad Pattiya and Alkesh Narware and directed them them to pay the fine within 45 days, Sebi said in the order passed on Friday. Further, Sebi directed Pattiya and Narware to disgorge unlawful gains worth Rs 4.83 crore with an interest of 12 per cent per annum jointly and severally from February 2022. In the final order, Sebi found that the front entities had opened the trading accounts under the instructions of the operator group (Shivprasad Pattiya and Alkesh Narware) and these trading accounts and bank accounts were under the control of the operator group. Sebi observed that the caller group had identified prospective investors (complainants) which had credit balance in their ledger and obtained their credentials in the name of Algo/software trades and the same were also under the control of the Shivprasad Pattiya and Alkesh Narware. The trades executed through the mobile in the accounts of the complainants and the front entities were also under the control of the Pattiya and Narware, Sebi said. "...it is established that the entire fraudulent scheme is attributable solely and squarely to the noticees (operator group) and they were the controlling minds and beneficiaries of the fraudulent arrangement. "The acts of the noticee amounts to manipulative, deceptive device and artifice to defraud while dealing in securities," Sebi's Quasi Judicial Authority N Murugan said in the order. Pattiya and Narware were found to have violated the provisions of PFUTP (Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices) rules. The order came after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) received alerts on suspicious trades in illiquid 'Out of the Money' stock options with unusual price variations. NSE also got complaints from investors who suffered losses after sharing trading credentials for Algo-based trading via WhatsApp groups. Thereafter, Sebi conducted a probe to look into the role of a group of entities led Shivprasad Pattiya and Alkesh Narware allegedly misused online trading kits, promised guaranteed returns, and executed manipulative trades. The investigation covered the period from January 2021 to February 2022.

Hyderabad techie dies in road accident in Chintoor

Hyderabad-based software engineer Vysyaraju Raviraju (26) died while his three friends survived with minor injuries after a car in which they were travelling to Maredumilli hit a tree near Tummala village under Chintoor police limits in Alluri Sitharama Raju (A.S.R.) district. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the group of four software engineers were on their way to spend the weekend at Maredumilli. Chintoor Sub-Inspector Perooru Ramesh told The Hindu: 'Mr. Raviraju died while undergoing medical treatment in Government Hospital at Bhadrachalam in Telangana on Saturday evening. He sat on the back seat, but suffered a head injury. The deceased is a native of Visakhapatnam city.' Meghalaya Honeymoon murder: Police detain Indore property dealer for burning evidence

Meghalaya Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested two persons including a property dealer from Madhya Pradesh in connection with the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi. The Indore-based property dealer identified as Silome James was detained from Bhonrasa toll-gate in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh while he was trying to flee to Bhopal on Saturday. He was held for concealing a box belonging to Raghuvanshi's wife and murder accused Sonam, who hid it in a flat in Indore after the murder. "Meghalaya Police SIT arrested one Silome James from Bhonrasa toll-gate in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh while he was trying to flee to Bhopal around 7.30 pm on Saturday. He is a property dealer and lessee of a building at Heera Bagh Colony in Indore where Sonam had stayed and kept the jewellery and other items she took with her after the incident," East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem told news agency PTI. Later, a security guard, identified as Balla Ahirwar, was also nabbed by the SIT from his native village in Ashok Nagar district of Madhya Pradesh around 2 AM on Sunday. Ahirwar was posted at the Heera Bagh Colony building. The two will be produced before a court in Indore, seeking a transit remand for being taken to Shillong for further investigation, Syiem added. According to the police, James led the SIT to the place where he disposed of all the items of the box by burning. A member of the SIT said that Sonam's boyfriend Raj Kushwaha owned a firearm and this was kept at the property along with jewellery and a laptop. At the site where James had burnt the box, there were no signs of the pistol, laptop or any of the jewellery belonging to Raja, reported PTI. During the investigation, Vishal alias Vicky Chauhan revealed that he had booked an online auto from his Indore residence to Sonam's hideout in the same city with a black bag containing her clothes, jewellery, ₹ 5 lakh in cash, and a pistol, reported India Today TV. After checking some CCTV footages, the police identified James carrying a black bag from the flat and putting it in a car, reported India Today TV. The flat was rented out to murder co-accused Vishal Chauhan by James. On June 13, James had told reporters that Chauhan approached him on May 30 and rented the flat for ₹ 17,000 per month, signing a formal agreement. Sonam allegedly stayed in the flat for several days on return from Meghalaya, before eventually surrendering to police in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh on June 8.
