Young innovators rise: build ICT and AI solutions, shine at WTISD-HK 2025, hosted by the Communications Association of Hong Kong
This year's World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD-HK) successfully concluded with a Prize Presentation Ceremony on May 17, 2025. In alignment with the theme, 'Enhance equality in our society with AI in communications', set by the International Telecommunication Union, the Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) has collaborated with schools and the information and communication technology (ICT) sector to inspire students to develop innovative digital solutions addressing social challenges.
WTISD-HK 2025 featured two main activities: ICT Open Day and Proposal Competition. Both activities aligned with the theme of WTISD-HK 2025, attracting enthusiastic participation from over 300 Form Four to Six secondary school students as well as those in tertiary education.
The Communications Authority has continued to support WTISD-HK as the event sponsor this year. Lending their support as the site sponsors for the ICT Open Day were China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited (CMHK), Communications Authority, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, HGC Global Communications Limited, Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology (HKIIT), HKT Limited, and SmarTone, while Huawei sponsored the prizes given out at the Proposal Competition. The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) Academy served as the venue sponsor for the WTISD-HK 2025 Prize Presentation Ceremony.

About 210 students and teachers from 16 schools took full advantage of the ICT Open Day, forming guided tour groups to visit various organisations and companies. These tours provided students with an exclusive opportunity to participate in workshops and gain valuable insights from industry experts. By interacting with professionals and executives of the site sponsors, students gained deeper insights into how AI applications are advancing communications and benefiting society. The organisers and site sponsors were highly impressed by the students' maturity and insightful perspectives on AI communication technologies.
The ICT Open Day has played a vital role in inspiring secondary students to consider future careers in the ICT sector. CAHK extends its gratitude to the site sponsors for their unwavering support in making this event engaging and impactful for all participating students.
The Proposal Competition aimed to encourage students to develop innovative solutions that apply AI to telecommunications and communications. Centred around the theme, 'Enhance equality in our society with AI in communications', the competition motivated students to explore AI-driven solutions that promote equality in various aspects – including but not limited to education, social inclusion, economics, gender and race – while fostering a more equitable digital future within Hong Kong communities.
A judging panel of six industry executives and ICT experts reviewed the submissions and were highly impressed by their quality.

The judges praised the students' thorough research, insightful analysis of AI applications in both domestic and global contexts, and their ability to identify AI's potential for benefiting society. Each proposal demonstrated a deep understanding of AI's role in addressing societal challenges, with many students skilfully utilising presentation tools to enhance their work. The judges commended the students for their exceptional innovation and practical applications, recognising their forward-thinking approaches.

HK a safe harbour for funds amid turbulence: Paul Chan
HK a safe harbour for funds amid turbulence: Paul Chan Finance chief Paul Chan says two-thirds of the city's US$4 trillion of managed assets originates from outside Hong Kong. Photo: RTHK Financial Secretary Paul Chan said on Monday he is optimistic about upcoming results from the annual asset and wealth management survey conducted by Hong Kong's securities watchdog as the city continues to woo global capital with its offer of a "safe harbour" amid global turbulence. Speaking at the 18th annual conference of the Hong Kong Investment Funds Association in Admiralty, Chan said net inflows into Hong Kong-domiciled funds surpassed US$44 billion for the 12-month period in the runup to March, almost three times higher year on year. "We are optimistic about the upcoming SFC Asset and Wealth Management Activities Survey," he told event participants, many of whom are fund management elites. "At last count, Hong Kong managed nearly US$4 trillion in assets, more than 10 times of our GDP. "Notably, two-thirds of this capital originates from outside of Hong Kong. "Several factors are driving this growth. First, the Greater Bay Area (GBA). With its affluent population and growing demand for offshore asset allocation, Hong Kong is the natural choice." Chan said cross-border fund flows between the SAR and the GBA have increased by sevenfold to more than 100 billion yuan since the GBA Wealth Management Connect scheme was enhanced last February and hinted of more measures to come. Also contributing to the increase in fund inflows is the growing number of family offices setting up shop here, with the total expected to exceed 3,000 soon from the current 2,700, he said. Potential investments from some 1,400 ultra-rich individuals could amount to over US$5.2 billion following the introduction of the cash-for-residency New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme. This, he said, was because the city continued to stand out as a trusted gateway and "safe harbour" for global capital under the One Country, Two Systems framework. Chan said the government is improving the preferential tax regimes for family offices to further enhance the asset and wealth management industry. The aim is for the legislation to be submitted to the Legislative Council next year, with implementation from the 2025-2026 assessment year onwards, he said.

Asian shippers fear spiralling costs as Iran threatens Strait of Hormuz closure
US air strikes on Iran sent oil prices soaring on Monday, leaving Asian shippers burdened with fresh costs on top of extra insurance premiums of US$1 million more per tanker, as Tehran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz and paralyse the crucial sea lane. Up to 20 million barrels of oil pass each day through Hormuz, one-fifth of global supply, most of it destined for East Asia's biggest economies – China, South Korea and Japan. The neck of water is controlled by Iran, whose parliament on Sunday approved the closure of the shipping lane in response to the US joining Israel 's bombardment of the country. Any closure of Hormuz will have global ramifications for the Gulf oil-producing nations and the export markets of Asia. Oil spiked to close to US$80 on Monday morning from US$60 a barrel at the beginning of June. Any prolonged rise is likely to soon be felt by Asian consumers.

Hong Kong's New World downplays debt-deal rumours as analysts see path out of crunch
Hong Kong's New World Development said talks with creditors about refinancing its HK$124 billion (US$15.8 billion) debt were 'ongoing', downplaying 'market speculation and rumours' about an imminent deal while analysts said government support and bank leniency would help the company navigate the crunch. The city's most indebted developer said in a stock-exchange filing on Monday that it was aware of speculation about the refinancing of its existing loans, adding that it remained 'actively engaged' with its creditors. The statement followed a recent Bloomberg report that said the debt-laden firm was nearing a HK$87.5 billion deal to refinance its loans after months of negotiation, citing sources familiar with the matter. The deal would require consent from more than 50 lenders by June 30, and failure to meet this threshold could trigger covenant breaches, force the release of pledged collateral or lead to repayment demands, the report said. '[New World's statement] is more about managing investors' expectations given that the refinancing terms have not been finalised,' said Jeff Zhang, an analyst with Morningstar. The proposed refinancing deal was said to be backed by some 40 assets, including the company's New World Tower headquarters and its flagship Victoria Dockside complex in Tsim Sha Tsui. Bloomberg also reported that New World was in the market for a separate HK$15.6 billion loan secured against Victoria Dockside to support the larger refinancing exercise. New World's statement came after Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po signalled a supportive stance from regulators and banks towards developers navigating financing stress.
