The Wallingford rowing club facing "Goliath" independent schools

BBC News23-05-2025

The coach of a community rowing club has said raising enough funds for a new boat would make a "massive difference" for its young members. Wallingford Rowing Club has mostly state school rowers and is largely run by volunteers, with independent school Radley College among its regular opponents.Sport England have offered a grant of £8,000 towards the cost of a new boat, worth £16,000.But to access the funding, the club must raise the remaining £8,000 themselves and have until 10 July to do so.
The club was formed in 1947 and runs a junior section, as well as senior men's and women's squads. Its clubhouse is a Grade II-listed former brewery in Wallingford, on the banks of the River Thames. More than 90% of its 147 junior members attend state schools, most of them at local secondary Wallingford School. Speaking to BBC Radio Oxford's Adam Ball, Katie Greves, a director and Olympic silver medallist, said the club frequently had to borrow boats and equipment from other clubs and schools. "Hinksey Sculling School is lending us a boat this weekend... and Radley College lent us a couple of riggers for a boat. "That's the difference between a state school club and a private school club. We don't have the resources, we don't have the number of coaches."[But] we've given [the children] purpose and independence. As a parent and coach, I think that's the most important thing we can give our young people".
'Community atmosphere'
Junior rower Daisy Coleman, 17, said the club was a tight-knit community. "Everyone plays a big role and everyone is constantly trying to fundraise. I've met some of my best friends here... it's a great community atmosphere". The club have until 10 July to reach their fundraising target. "Above and beyond anything else, [rowing] teaches you be persistent," said Ms Greves. That quality could serve the club well in their pursuit of their new boat.

Emma Raducanu handed tough draw at Eastbourne on return from back injury

British number one Emma Raducanu has been handed a testing draw at next week's Lexus Eastbourne Open, where she is expected to make a return after managing a back problem. The 22-year-old has been troubled by the issue since competing at Strasbourg in May ahead of the French Open. Former US Open champion Raducanu took an off-court medical timeout during her quarter-final loss to Zheng Qinwen at Queen's Club last week, after which it was confirmed she would miss the Berlin Open, having been offered a wild card into the WTA 500 event. Raducanu had instead looked to prioritise rest and recovery to ensure she is fully fit for Wimbledon, which begins on June 30. At last year's LTA event on the south coast, Raducanu claimed a first victory over a top-10 player by defeating Jessica Pegula before going on to make the fourth round at Wimbledon. Seeded seventh in the draw for Eastbourne, Raducanu has been handed a first-round match against American Ann Li. Should Raducanu progress through the top half of the draw, she could then come up against two-time Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur in the second round. Defending Eastbourne champion Daria Kasatkina, the Australian world number 16, is also a potential opponent in the quarter-finals. Speaking about her fitness issues after playing at Queen's, Raducanu said: 'It's been lingering for the last few weeks and I have had back issues before. 'I think it's just a vulnerability of mine. I know I need to take good care of it. 'I'm not overly concerned that it's something serious, but I know it's something that's very annoying and needs proper and careful management.'

Zara McDermott says she's ‘taking a step back' from ‘negative' social media amid Sam Thompson online abuse

ZARA McDermott is taking a hiatus from social media to focus on making a new documentary about family violence. The former Love Island star announced her break from socials just days after ex Sam Thompson came face to face with her new boyfriend, Louis Tomlinson. 3 3 She split from Made In Chelsea star, Sam, earlier this year after five years together and was spotted with the One Direction singer in March. Zara took to her Instagram stories to update her fans and explain why she was stepping away from social media for a short while. "I also just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who messaged me with regards to the story I posted the other day," she began. "If you didn't see it; I spoke about developing my next documentary and how I've been thinking of how to create a project about domestic abuse, coercive control and tech abuse." Zara revealed she had received thousands of message from people who had stories to share and she was still going through them. "But I wanted to say the biggest thank you ever. It's so nice speaking to you all because I've definitely taken a bit of a step back from socials to focus on my documentaries and other work just focusing on being more present recently," she explained. The TV star added: "Social media feels quite heavy and a negative space sometimes... so to be able to feel like we can work together to do something super positive is a great feeling. thank you again. forever grateful to all of you who continue to support the work i do. it really means SO much." Her post comes just days after Sam and Louis came face to face while representing England in the charity football match, Soccer Aid. The pair had already crossed paths on the training pitch last week, prior to Sam pulling out of the gam e due to injury and later attended the same pre-game dinner. Both men looked relaxed this evening as they milled around their hotel with fellow squad members. Zara has already ruled herself out of attending the star-studded match. Sam presented a video of his charity work in Guatemala to both sets of players, something he found much more nerve-racking than meeting Louis. He said: 'I did a small talk in front of everyone, which was terrifying, and I maintain I think it's the most important thing I've done in my 32 years of life. 'I really do believe that. Getting to go to Guatemala to see what UNICEF do on the ground is just life-changing.' 3

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo signs new three-year deal

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has signed a new three-year contract to remain at the City Ground until at least 2028. The 51-year-old guided Forest to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season, securing European qualification for the first time since the 1995-96 season. Advertisement For much of the campaign, it looked as though Forest were going to qualify for the Champions League, but they lost five of their last eight games. However, that has not prevented owner Evangelos Marinakis from rewarding Nuno following the club's highest league finish for 30 years, while they also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup before losing to Manchester City. Nuno said: 'I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club. 'Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the Club, which helped us achieve great things last season. Advertisement 'I would like to thank our owner, Mr Marinakis, for his constant support and backing. It is important to me to share a strong relationship with our ownership and we have thoroughly enjoyed working together ever since I arrived at Forest. 'Now is the time to work harder than ever as we strive for more special memories together.' The former Wolves and Tottenham boss arrived at the City Ground in December 2023 following the sacking of Steve Cooper, and helped the club avoid relegation on the final day of the season. Marinakis said: 'Nuno has made a great impact and performed very well during his time with us so far. Advertisement 'He has demonstrated that he maximises player performance and is an expert at developing players, whilst also embedding our young talent into the first team set-up. 'We enjoy a strong and solid relationship together and, above all, we share the same dream and ambition of writing a new history for Nottingham Forest, competing in the Premier League and in Europe and winning trophies for our great club.'
