Mashatile's VIP protectors' occurrence report doesn't mention assault
One of the officers from Deputy President Paul Mashatile's protection team told the VIP incident management officer that a speeding VW Polo driver was trying to get close to the main car the day the VIP officers allegedly assaulted a motorist.
Sgt Goodwill Rikhotso, an incident management officer at the VIP police unit, revealed this at the Randburg magistrate's court on Tuesday.
He testified in the case of the eight VIP protection unit officers from Mashatile's protection team who allegedly assaulted a motorist on the N1 highway in Johannesburg in July 2023.
Rikhotso, who writes accident and incident reports in the VIP unit, testified that one of the accused officers, W/O Phineas Boshielo, reported to him about the July 2 2023 incident.
However, the incident report didn't mention anything about an assault incident.
'W/O Boshielo reported that at about 16:00 bravo convoy were run on the N1 north road from Soweto when a blue Polo driving behind the convoy, trying to get close to the main car,' Rikhotso read from the report he compiled during the examination in chief.
The state led the evidence of Rikhotso, who testified that they were speaking in Tswana when Boshielo called him, and there was no miscommunication between them.
'They first backup shielded the main car against driver of the Polo. They ordered the driver to reduce speed but instead he continue to race with the convoy and they end up forcing him out the road,' Rikhotso read the report.
Rikhotso testified that Boshielo reported that: 'They stopped him [driver] and inside the Polo there were three males and one female, smashed on the windows trying to run away but the first backup managed to catch them and they searched them and the vehicle as well but they did not find any weapons in the vehicle.
'Later the first backup joined the convoy, and Capt Lepota was informed about the incident.'
Shadrack Kojoana, Johannes Mampuru, Pomso Mofokeng, Harmans Ramokhonami, Phineas Boshielo, Churchill Mkhize, Lesibana Rambau and Moses Tshidada face 12 counts, including assault, malicious damage to property, pointing of a firearm, contravening the Road Traffic Act, reckless and negligent driving and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
The case was adjourned to Wednesday for the defence lawyer, Mswazi Makhubele, to consult the accused before cross-examining Rikhotso.

261 arrested in Tshwane crime crackdown
A total of 261 suspects have been arrested in a sweeping, high-impact crime-combating initiative led by police under the banner of Operation Shanela in the Tshwane District. The multidisciplinary operation, which focused on the Sinoville and Villieria policing precincts, was spearheaded by Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine in collaboration with various law enforcement partners. The co-ordinated effort, executed on June 19, forms part of ongoing SAPS strategies to curb crime and enhance visibility in known hotspots. With intensified patrols, compliance inspections, and suspect tracing, law enforcement officers targeted criminal elements plaguing the northern parts of Tshwane. Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the operation yielded significant results. He said of the 261 suspects arrested, 187 were apprehended through detective work. These arrests include seven suspects for murder, three for attempted murder, nine for armed robbery, 30 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and six for rape. Van Dyk said road safety and immigration compliance were also in focus. A major roadblock, executed with support from tactical teams, led to the detention of 63 undocumented foreign nationals. The individuals are currently undergoing processing for possible court appearances and deportation. 'As part of proactive enforcement, 682 individuals and 306 vehicles were searched during the operation, with ownership of 14 vehicles verified. Officers also conducted patrols across 35 high-crime areas and premises, resulting in multiple arrests. 'One suspect was arrested for possession and dealing in dagga. Police recovered a shopping bag full of dagga, two compressed dagga balls, and 28 small bags of dagga, along with an undisclosed amount of cash,' said Van Dyk. He said another individual was taken into custody for possession of suspected stolen property. The suspect was found in possession of three TV sets, seven cellphones, two tablets, and two watches. He failed to provide a plausible explanation for the goods. Traffic law enforcement also formed a critical pillar of the operation. Tshwane traffic officers issued 160 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R72 600. Seven minibus taxis were impounded for various violations of the Road Traffic Act, and five pedestrians were fined for creating dangerous circumstances on the roads. Six premises were inspected, and two were shut down for failing to comply with the Liquor Act. Police confiscated over 127 litres of alcohol during the crackdown. Major-General Thine expressed appreciation for the dedication and co-operation of all SAPS members and stakeholders who participated in the operation. 'The collective efforts of our law enforcement family continue to bring tangible results in our fight against crime,' he said. Central residents urged to adhere to gun laws
Pretoria Central SAPS are encouraging residents to obtain the correct certification to carry firearms in light of a recent spate of illegal possession arrests. While expressing his approval over his station's recent successes, station commander Brigadier Hlengane Gibin Mashaba said illegal firearms pose a serious risk to public safety. 'We want to call on all people who have firearms to ensure they complete their firearm competency training, thus ensuring they meet the legal requirements to possess a firearm,' Mashaba said. In the most recent arrest, a 19-year-old was taken into custody after police recovered a firearm in his possession, which he did not have a permit for. A team led by Captain Nthuteng Mogotsi, consisting of Constable Itumeleng Kgasago, patrollers Thoko Nchabeleng, Samuel Mathato, and Mpho Chaka, were conducting stop-and-searches in the inner city. At around 23:00, they came across a white VW Polo on Eeufees Road. '[When] approaching the vehicle, the members requested permission to search the car. They recovered a calibre loaded with one round hidden in a cabin. Unfortunately, the suspect did not have a valid document to possess the firearm. Steps were taken to confiscate the firearm for further ballistic analysis, and the suspect was taken to the station and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm,' said Constable Thabang Nkhumise. The arrest came on June 17, a few days after two suspects had been arrested for possession of two unregistered firearms and another for the same charge in separate instances. The 19-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court pending further investigation. The other three suspects remain in custody pending investigation and to address verification. Nkhumise said the block around the station and magistrate's court has had a power outage for the past three days, delaying a lot of cases. Wanted criminal shot dead near Nigel in Ekurhuleni
A notorious criminal wanted for numerous armed robberies was shot dead near Nigel in Ekurhuleni yesterday. Ridge Times reports that Presby Linda Nyamakazi (49), known to pose as a labour relations inspector, committed various armed robberies. Nyamakazi's death followed a robbery of a butchery in Balfour earlier the same day. He allegedly fled the crime scene in a white Renault Sandero, but a private security officer spotted him in Nigel. The officer managed to stop the Sandero, but when he tried to arrest Nyamakazi, a confrontation ensued, and Nyamakazi was shot and killed. Nyamakazi's details and photos had been circulating over the past six months, and a 'be on the lookout' alert was sent out for him. In one of Nyamakazi's alleged latest crimes, a well-known business in Sundra was targeted last Friday. More robberies occurred in the following days. Nyamakazi used cloned vehicles and false registration plates to avoid detection, often switching cars between incidents. Vehicles used included a blue VW Polo, a white Renault Sandero and a red Ford Fiesta, some of which were regularly spotted in Delmas, Sundra and Eloff. According to a trustworthy source, who wanted to remain anonymous, Nyamakazi allegedly committed his first armed robbery at the age of 14. Various arrests for offences such as armed robbery, hijacking and impersonating a government official followed. He also spent time behind bars and was, at the time of his death, apparently on parole.
