RANGERS finally named Russell Martin as the permanent successor to Philippe Clement last week.
It was after months of speculation over who the next Gers boss would be - and a former Rangers star has revealed he spoke to legendary manager Rafa Benitez about the opening.

Gregory Vignal spent a season on loan at Ibrox in 2004/05, playing 42 times as a member of the famous league title-winning Helicopter Sunday team.
The 43-year-old also had a two-month spell with Dundee United in 2012, but didn't make a single appearance as his career wound down with injury.
Vignal was loaned to Ibrox from Liverpool, where he met Benitez, and remains in touch with the Spaniard despite never playing a game under him.
And the Frenchman told the Daily Record that, in a recent meeting with the 65-year-old, they discussed the prospect of the Rangers gig, which was still vacant at the time.
Vignal said: "I met Rafa in Liverpool and we spoke about the Rangers job before Russell got it.
"He's not working at a club right now, he's with Uefa.
"But if Rangers would have considered him? Of course he would have been interested.
"I also spoke to Steven [Gerrard] and joked with him.
"I asked if he'd got his apartment in Glasgow ready!
"All of those types of guys have been in the game a long time so I have to listen to them and be really humble."
Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager
Vignal is currently an assistant to Viktors Morozs with Latvian champions RFS, and reckons the team he has there would finish in the top THREE in the Scottish Premiership.
He said: "Honestly, RFS would finish in the top three of the Scottish Premiership, I'm telling you, of course they would.
"People there might be surprised but it's true, we are good enough to be in the top three in Scotland.
"Even in my last job at Versailles, it was bigger than a lot of jobs in Scotland - and that was the French third tier.
"We had a £6million budget and for games against Red Star FC in Paris, we had a crowd of around 12,000 people at the game.
"So the job I had there, if you compare with some clubs in Scotland, it was bigger."

A likely starter when the national team begin their 2026 qualifying campaign away to Denmark in September, Doak is now back training and due to report for pre-season next month. He has not played since January due to a hamstring problem which eventually required surgery and prevented him helping Middlesbrough's promotion push whilst on loan in the English Championship. The 19-year-old is now in Portugal and posted social media footage of himself undergoing a rigorous training course with Empire Performance Elite. The routine showed him engaged in sharp movement exercises, including short sprints and shooting drills. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Doak emerged as a key player for Scotland during last year's Nations League campaign. He featured as a substitute in the first two games against Poland and Portugal but cemented a starting slot for the remaining four. He would have been involved in March's Nations League play-off against Greece had injury not struck. The former Celtic player is now preparing to report to Liverpool's Kirkby training base on Monday, 7 July, for the first day of pre-season training. Where he will be playing come the start of Scotland's World Cup qualifying ties is unclear. A number of English Premier League sides monitored him on loan at Middlesbrough and were impressed as he scored three goals and claimed seven assists in 24 appearances. The Everton manager David Moyes is one of Doak's admirers and is keen on a deal to sign him from rivals Liverpool this summer. Bournemouth have also been credited with an interest. Liverpool, Everton and the £30m transfer tag for ex-Celtic man Mo Salah's decision to extend his Liverpool contract renders the young Scotsman's chances of securing regular action in his favoured right-wing position extremely difficult this coming season. New £29.5m signing Jeremie Frimpong can also play in that role, so Doak's opportunities are likely to be limited under head coach Arne Slot. That could help Everton's chances of luring him across the city. A move for the teenager is likely in the coming weeks, even if it is another loan deal of some sort. Liverpool paid Celtic just £600,000 in training compensation when they signed Doak as a 16-year-old in 2022. Celtic are understood to have a sell-on clause in the deal, which could earn them a tidy return with Anfield officials reportedly valuing the Scot around the £30m mark. He needs regular games at a good level to regain his Scotland place and will be eager to help his country reach next summer's World Cup finals in USA, Canada and Mexico. He has made 10 first-team for Liverpool since arriving three years ago, most of those in cup competitions and European ties.

Rangers could break six year transfer rule for Russell Martin as three mega deals can fulfil 49ers 'surprise' pledge

Paraag Marathe has promised some surprises to fans in the market after facing shareholders for the first time It's been a sluggish start to the transfer window for Rangers following the blockbuster US takeover. New boss Russell Martin has seen Lyall Cameron come through the door after the midfielder had agreed a pre-contract move from Dundee before his arrival - with Max Aarons expected to arrive from Bournemouth on loan in the coming days. ‌ But after Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises faced Ibrox shareholders for the first time excitement is building for some big moves in the market. ‌ Speaking to the Rangers' backers, pharmaceutical tycoon Cavenagh played his cards close to his chest on how big a transfer kitty the club would hand to Martin: "We will be as transparent as we can but in other areas we will be pretty opaque - this is one of them.." Marathe added: "If we give you a number right now, suddenly that winger we're targeting becomes a lot more expensive so it's best we say less!" However, the Leeds United chairman would add: "If we share who we're targeting that players becomes more expensive. It's best for you all if we surprise you with the players we bring in!" The Glasgow giants have been careful with their spending in recent seasons - with the last time the club broke the £7million barrier coming all the way back in 2019 when Ryan Kent made his permanent move from Liverpool. So could the new owners surprise the punters by breaking that self-imposed barrier? Martin is said to be keen on a reunion with Southampton star Flynn Downes in the Scottish Premiership - having previously managed the 26-year-old at Swansea and the Saints. ‌ The midfielder was a key member of the Southampton team that secured promotion through the play-offs in the 2023/34 campaign while on loan from West Ham. He would return to the south coast ahead of their return to the Premier League for a £15m fee - and it could take a similarly money-spinning offer to tempt the St Mary's chiefs to sell. It has been suggested that bidding for the 26-year-old starts at £9million. ‌ Another raid of his former club could also come at a hefty cost, with Aaron Ramsdale being touted with a move to the Glasgow giants. The England international will reportedly be allowed to leave the English Championship side to boost his case for the World Cup with a loan exit said to be on the table. But should Southampton push for a permanent exit it is likely the relegated Premier League side would attempt to recoup a sizeable chunk of the £18m they forked out to Arsenal for the goalkeeper last summer. It's money-spinning thought for the 49ers as they look to spring a surprise this summer - and Matija Frigan is a striker who could also take a major fee to bring him to Rangers. The Croatian striker is currently valued at £6.5m by his club Westerlo - but reports in Belgium suggest that his price tag is set to rocket amid rising interest in the 22-year-old. Hamburg and Hull City are two of the clubs who are said to have shown an interest with Voetbal Primeur claiming Westerlo "hope" a bidding war breaks out to take his price tag beyond £7m with the Glasgow giants eyeing alternatives to Dor Turgeman.

Liverpool immediately have salt rubbed in wounds after £50m transfer collapse

Liverpool have been particularly successful when it comes to signing their top transfer targets, but there was one player who slipped through their net this summer Dean Huijsen has been hailed as Real Madrid's signing of the century following his standout performances at the Club World Cup. The La Liga giants snapped up Huijsen from Bournemouth for a hefty £50million this summer, beating Liverpool to his signature. Spain international Huijsen had caught the eye of several Premier League clubs, with Anfield chiefs openly expressing their desire to recruit the ex-Roma defender. However, the 20-year-old had his heart set on playing at the Bernabeu. ‌ Despite Liverpool having a fruitful transfer window with the acquisitions of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, missing out on his signature has left their centre-back search to continue and will have come as a blow, especially after his stellar showings under Xabi Alonso in the USA. ‌ He has been an ever-present figure in Real Madrid 's line-up so far, completing 90 minutes in both Club World Cup matches and forming a solid partnership with academy graduate Raul Asencio. His performance was particularly noteworthy during the team's 3-1 win over Pachuca, where he stood firm even after Asencio's early sending off. Tomas Roncero, a pundit for Cadena SER, didn't hold back in his praise when he said Huijsen was the club's "signing of the century" in defence. Back in April, reports from the Mail suggested that Arne Slot was keen on a £95m double swoop for Huijsen and Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth The Reds are nearing a deal to secure Kerkez, yet they will probably feel the sting of Huijsen's choice to join Real. The ex-Juventus star recently told Real's club media team: "It's a dream come true for me. "I think every kid dreams of playing for Real Madrid. It's the greatest club in the world and I'm very happy and really proud to be here. "It's a great group and there's real togetherness in the dressing room. We're thrilled to have Xabi Alonso here as well. ‌ "I think he has loads of good ideas and we're going to have some great years together. We are Real Madrid. We have to win and I think we're going to do just that." Liverpool remain on the hunt to fortify their defence, with rumours swirling over an interest in Crystal Palace and England international Marc Guehi. The ex-Chelsea centre-back is entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, putting Liverpool among other keen clubs in a favourable bargaining position. ‌ Should Guehi decide on a move to the Reds, he would become the third defensive reinforcement this summer. Strengthening the backline became essential following Trent Alexander-Arnold's switch to the Spanish capital. Frimpong was swiftly brought in as a direct successor. Additionally, Kerkez is set to challenge Andy Robertson for the left-back spot should his £40m move be completed, although Robertson himself has recently been linked with a transfer to Atletico Madrid. In the meantime, Spanish publication Marca has reported that Liverpool's central defender Ibrahima Konate is on Real's radar for the 2026/27 season. The Frenchman's contract is set to expire next year and there are fears that Los Blancos could swoop in and sign him at the end of his contract, much like they did with Alexander-Arnold this summer.
