US investment groups have increasingly used celebrity faces to front their takeovers of English football clubs, with Gareth Bale the latest to be tapped up to full that role
Gareth Bale is in talks to front an American takeover of League One side Plymouth Argyle. The Pilgrims were relegated to the third tier this season following a disastrous reign of Wayne Rooney as manager.
Rooney was sacked in January after winning just four games to be replaced by Miron Muslic. But the Bosnian decided to take over the head coach role at 2.Bundesliga side Schalke after Plymouth's relegation was confirmed.

Former Watford manager Tom Cleverley is their third boss of the past 12 months and has been tasked with leading them back to the Championship. But Cleverley himself could have a new boss.

Cleverley was appointed by current Argyle chairman Simon Hallett. But Hallett has been looking for fresh investment in the club for the past year, having become the majority shareholder in 2018.
A deal for further investment fell through last month, but the interest of a US-based private equity group is growing. They are now looking to bring in a celebrity face in the form of former Tottenham and Real Madrid star Bale.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Bale is being lined up by the group eyeing a takeover of Plymouth. Talks between the club and the group are ongoing, with Bale's involvement an unexpected addition to the story.
The Welshman has no historic connection to the Home Park side. But US groups have increasingly looked to partner with famous faces in any deals to buy clubs operating below the Premier League.
Bale's former team-mate at Spurs and Madrid, Luka Modric, is involved with Swansea City. NFL legend Tom Brady has invested in Birmingham City, while golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas have bought shares in Leeds United.

It is unclear how Bale has become involved in the project. He won three La Liga titles and five Champions Leagues during his time at Madrid, before retiring in 2023 after a short spell with Los Angeles FC.
Relegation came as a bitter blow for Argyle, with the club finishing three points from safety. Hallett has led significant off-field investment, with the South Coast side redeveloping their Mayflower Grandstander and funding new academy facilities.
Amid the talk over fresh investment, Hallett has pledged to match the level of funding a new group brings in this season. Though he admitted last month that he felt new investment was not forthcoming.

'We have been in talks with a prospective new investor in our club for over a year – those talks led to an application for approval of that investment being lodged with the EFL in February,' he said at the time.
'Unfortunately, negotiations have taken too long and the key information that both we and the EFL required to complete the deal has not been forthcoming. I no longer believe that news of the new investor is imminent.'

Despite extensive damage to his vehicle, the 36-year-old walked away from the accident with only minor injuries after being checked over as emergency services attended the scene. In an astonishing show of resilience, McClean didn't let the scare stop him and made it to training later that day once his car was removed. ‌ He even took to the pitch for Wrexham 's important League One match against Birmingham City at the Racecourse Ground the next night, which ended in a 1-1 draw. McClean has now opened up about the incident, acknowledging he was fortunate to avoid more serious consequences. ‌ Discussing the ordeal during the latest instalment of the ' Welcome to Wrexham ' docuseries, McClean said: "It was a really foggy morning and it was hard to see. I thought I had more road than I did. I came out from behind a lorry and the roundabout just appeared. "For the next five seconds it was just a blur. Then the car stopped and there's all this smoke coming out of the car. The door was quite wedged and I was banging it to get it open." Reflecting on the seriousness of the incident, he added: "I just see it as there's bigger things ahead for me and it just wasn't my time. I was saved that day. It was a scary experience, but it just shows you how quickly things can change." McClean's wife Erin also expressed her alarm upon hearing about the accident via a text from her husband, with whom she shares four children. "I got a message from James saying he'd just been in a crash and he sent me a picture of the car," she said. "I didn't believe it. "My heart just started racing and then I rang him straight away. He answered and I was like, 'Are you hurt?' He was like, 'I'm actually okay.' I just jumped in the car and went straight to Wrexham. He came out and was like, 'I'm going to training.'" ‌ McClean previously exposed the vile taunts that Erin faced online after the accident. Taking to Instagram following his appearance against Birmingham, he posted: "Now that the game is out of the way, to address yesterday. An experience I never wish to encounter again. "I am blessed and thankful I managed to walk away with minor injuries and return home to my family, though much to the disappointment of some smelly scruffy pathetic creatures that messaged my wife online. Thank you for the messages of support." McClean made the move to Wrexham from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed sum in the summer of 2023, having previously played in the Premier League with Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion. He has been instrumental in helping the club, which is owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, secure automatic promotion in the past two seasons, propelling them from League Two to the Championship. Zverev overcomes stomach bug to set up Halle semi-final with Medvedev

June 20 (Reuters) - Alexander Zverev's quest for a first grasscourt title took an unexpected turn at the Halle Open on Friday when the German second seed was forced to sprint from court to vomit mid-match before rallying to defeat Italy's Flavio Cobolli 6-4 7-6(8). Second seed Zverev started the match on the front foot by breaking in the first game but as he was serving in the second, he requested a toilet break to throw up and bolted down the tunnel. Once he returned, Zverev struggled with the intensity at first and clearly looked unwell, bending over in exhaustion after points and gasping for breath after a marathon rally. "I felt fine before the match. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I felt really, really bad. I felt ill, went to throw up and then 15 minutes later I felt OK again," Zverev said. "I don't know what it was, I've never experienced that before. I hope I'll be fine in the next couple of hours when the adrenaline settles. After that I think it was a pretty good match." Although nowhere near 100%, Zverev held serve as he slowly drew on his reserves of energy, firing his first ace of the match on set point. The second set was an even contest as Cobolli relied on his movement to continue troubling Zverev, but the German eventually triumphed in a close tiebreak, finishing the match with 22 winners and 12 points at the net. The semi-final pits Zverev against Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev, a familiar foe who holds a 12-7 head-to-head advantage and has won their last three meetings. "I think he's the guy that I played the most in my career. I'm looking forward to it," Zverev added. "A lot of things happened in the last 18 months. He's one of my toughest opponents in my career. It's going to be a great match and I'm really looking forward to facing him." Medvedev moved into the semi-finals with a 6-4 6-3 victory over American Alex Michelsen despite suffering a nosebleed in the second set which forced the 2021 Halle runner-up to take a medical timeout. However, the Russian served well to deny his opponent a single break point opportunity and wrapped up the contest in 85 minutes as he reached the last four without dropping a set, with the only thing causing problems being the shadows on the court. "The shadows on the court made the conditions quite difficult. It took some time to get used to it. It was then better in the second set," said Medvedev, who will return to the top 10 ahead of Wimbledon.
