Prison inmates' spirit shines at Cherlapally as annual sports and cultural meet ends on a high note
Over 220 inmates from across Telangana's correctional facilities came together at Central Prison, Cherlapally, for a three-day celebration of grit, talent and rehabilitation, as the 2025 edition of the Annual Prisoners Sports & Cultural Meet drew to a spirited close on Sunday.
Organised by the Telangana Department of Prisons & Correctional Services, the event brought together prisoners from Cherlapally, Chanchalguda, the Hyderabad Prison Range and Warangal Prison Range, grouped into four platoons of 55 members each. The meet, running from May 9 to 11, blended athleticism with artistry and aimed to provide inmates with a structured platform for reinvention and reintegration.
The closing ceremony was headlined by Minister for IT, Industries, and Legislative Affairs D. Sridhar Babu with legislators Patnam Mahender Reddy and Bandari Laxma Reddy, and corporator Bonthu Sridevi in attendance.
In his address, the Minister commended prison authorities for transforming jails into 'centres of reform and rehabilitation' and applauded Director General of Prisons Soumya Mishra for spearheading initiatives that focus on the welfare and reform of inmates. He noted that while many prisoners were there due to unfortunate turns in life, they are now actively working towards becoming better citizens.
A key highlight of the Minister's speech was the praise lavished on products made by prison industries, ranging from soaps to steel furniture, that he claimed could rival multinational brands in quality. The Karimnagar Fuel Outlet run by inmates also earned a special mention for its honesty and high sales figures.
Participants trained for two months ahead of the event, with special diets rich in protein to keep them fighting fit.
Events included cricket, volleyball, kabaddi, athletics, chess, carrom and badminton, alongside cultural programmes such as singing, dancing, skits, mimicry, musical performance and visual arts.
The Central Prison at Cherlapally dominated the scoreboard, bagging six golds and three silvers to clinch the overall championship. Central Prison, Hyderabad, followed with four golds and one silver. Cherlapally also took home the 'Best Team in Parade' title.
Ms.Mishra, in her closing remarks, thanked prison staff, participants and guests, and reiterated the department's commitment to reform-based prison management.

Former RLP worker arrested for ‘issuing death threats' to MP Upendra Kushwaha
Patna Police Saturday arrested a former party worker for allegedly issuing death threats to Rashtriya Lok Morcha president Upendra Kushwaha. The suspect has been identified as Rakesh Kumar alias Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, a resident of Darouli police station in Siwan district who left the party a few days ago. According to the Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya Sharma, Kushwaha received seven threatening calls and a message on his official mobile number on June 19 – all allegedly made in the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The calls were allegedly made over speculation that Rajya Sabha MP was rethinking alliances ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly election. Kushwaha's RLP is currently part of the National Democratic Alliance. The leader had attended Prime Minister rally in Siwan Friday. Kushwaha had tweeted about the threats late Thursday, claiming he had received calls from two mobile numbers between 8:52 pm and 9:20 pm. '…at 8:57 PM, I received an MMS/SMS…stating that if I continue to speak politically against a particular party, I will have to face the consequences, and that I would be finished within 10 days,' the Rajya Sabha member's post on X said, urging the Patna Police to take action. SSP Sharna said an FIR had been registered at Secretariat Police Station Friday under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act based on a written complaint by his (Kushwaha's) personal assistant. The Special Intelligence Unit conducted a technical investigation to trace the origin of the calls, he said. The SSP claimed that the mobile phone used in the incident has been recovered from the accused. 'We have also recovered a diary from him which contains the contact numbers of several prominent individuals and various other people. He had attempted to contact several people and in the course of this, he spoke to the MP on three occasions,' he said. During interrogation police learnt 'the accused thought that Kushwaha might join another party, which is why he issued the threats'. 'He claims to be his (Kushwaha's) supporter but was recently dissatisfied with some of his statements, which led to the threats,' SSP Sharma said, adding that the suspect had no link with gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

85-year-old Pune man, seeking a bride, duped of Rs 11.45 lakh by online fraudsters
An 85-year-old man in Pune who was in search of a life partner allegedly ended up losing over Rs 11 lakh to cyberfraudsters after he responded to a matrimonial advertisement in a newspaper. The police said that the victim, a resident of the Bibwewadi area, transferred Rs 11,45,350 into multiple bank accounts between April 18 and June 1 as per the demands of the 'prospective bride'. According to the police, when the person contacted the number mentioned in the ad, he was asked to pay a registration fee into a given bank account number. 'After the registration, the person shared the details of a woman with him, saying she would be his bride. The woman contacted the victim, and what followed was a series of conversations between the two. In a few days, the woman won the trust of the victim and she made promises to marry him. She sought financial help for various purposes, and the victim went on depositing the money into different bank accounts as per the demands made by the woman,' said an officer. Despite making the payments, the woman was skirting his marriage demands, after which he approached the police. The police at the Bibwewadi station filed the First Information Report (FIR) on Friday under sections 319(2), 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Indian Penal Code and sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act. The police are probing the mobile number and bank accounts used by the fraudsters.

Nashik police arrest 3 for kidnapping hotel manager
Nashik: The Nashik city police on Thursday arrested three people pertaining to the kidnapping of a hotel manager (39) on June 14 and later robbing him of Rs 5 lakh and cellphone before releasing him. The suspects are in the custody at the Indiranagar police station. The police said the hotel manager, who was riding his scooter home, was abducted by three to four people travelling by car at around 12.30am on June 14. They blocked victim's way and forced him into their car. Subsequently, they started beating him up and snatched his cellphone. They also took the password of his phone and transferred Rs 5 lakh from his bank account to another bank account. The hotel manager was released by the criminals after close to 23 hours. The trio also demanded an extortion of Rs 10 lakh from him. The hotel manager then registered a complaint with the Indiranagar police station, following which an FIR was registered by the police for the offences punishable under sections 140(2) (kidnapping for murder or ransom), 308(5) (extortion), 127(7) (wrongful confinement), and other sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanahita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act. The crime branch unit 2 officers, led by assistant inspector Hemant Todkar, checked the CCTV footage of the area and identified one of the kidnappers as Sajid Shaikh, who was located in Naupada, Thane. On detaining him, Sajid Shaikh (32) said he was a native of Igatpuri and currently residing in Nashik. The police seized a hatchback car worth Rs 2.4 lakh from him and his cellphone worth Rs 10,000. Later, the police also detained another suspect, Kunal Jariya (25) and Pravin Devkule (28), both from Igatpuri. The trio confessed to kidnapping the hotel manager for money. Todkar said the trio had no prior knowledge of the hotel manager. They kidnapped him, checked his phone and found a heavy balance in his bank account. The police said out of the Rs 5 lakh transferred to different bank accounts by the trio, Rs 2.5 lakh have been withheld. Another Rs 2.5 lakh was yet to be recovered.
