Egypt's Grand Imam of Al-Azhar: True humanity cannot be led by arms trade and economies of destruction

CAIRO – 19 June 2025: The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed El-Tayeb stated that humans of the 21st century are witnessing the peak of technological progress and the peak of misery at the same time for trying to eliminate religion and replacing it with materialism and abstract science
During a meeting at Al-Azhar Sheikhdom with a delegation of students specializing in Middle Eastern studies from George Washington University (USA) and the American University in Cairo, the Grand Imam stressed that "science alone cannot guarantee peace and security. It is a double-edged sword that requires a moral compass—one that only religion can provide."
The delegation was accompanied by Nathan J. Brown, professor of political science at George Washington University; and Nadine Murad Sika, professor of political science at the American University in Cairo.
The Grand Imam emphasized that 'seeking knowledge fosters awareness and builds a balanced mind capable of distinguishing truth from falsehood, good from evil." He emphasized the need to harness knowledge to serve peace and achieve security and safety in societies.
He continued that the world today has lost its mind, referring to the inhuman suffering Palestinians are subjected to.
"Today we are witnessing the most tragic conditions, where Palestinians are not allowed even a sip of water and are massacred in broad daylight without any international or UN action or prosecution of the unjust aggressors. This reflects a true crisis in the human conscience,' he said.
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar pointed to the danger of the contemporary man's superficial approach to religion, emphasizing that "attempts to exclude religion from people's lives come among the reasons behind his loss of true happiness despite the tremendous scientific progress we are witnessing."
The Grand Imam criticized the negative impact of some aspects of Western civilization. "Western civilization is not all good; it disseminates some evils that threaten humanity," he said, adding that "true humanity cannot be led by the arms trade and economies of destruction, the consequences of which puts the entire world in endless distress."
The meeting also addressed terrorism, extremism, and women's rights in Islam. Sheikh El-Tayeb explained that Islam grants women a great status and clear rights. He also pointed out the danger of judging religion based on the actions of the extremists who deviate from its teachings and guidance. He stated, 'True religion will lead people to Paradise in this world before the Hereafter."
At the conclusion of the meeting, the student delegation expressed their happiness at being at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and meeting with the Grand Imam. They noted their great appreciation for his outstanding efforts in promoting a culture of peace and positive coexistence among the peoples and spreading the values of human fraternity.
The delegation commended the global initiatives and humanitarian stances the Grand Imam is following, most notably the historic "Document on Human Fraternity" he signed with His Holiness Pope Francis, the former Pope of the Catholic Church. They emphasized that it represents an important moral and humanitarian reference in this era.

Germany Withdraws Embassy Staff from Iran
Israa Farhan Germany's Foreign Ministry has temporarily withdrawn its diplomatic staff from the embassy in Tehran as tensions between Iran and Israel escalate into open conflict, according to German public broadcaster ARD. The move comes amid growing security concerns following direct military exchanges between Israel and Iran, prompting several Western nations to reassess their diplomatic presence in the region. According to ARD, embassy officials were relocated outside Iran, while family members of the diplomatic team had already left the country earlier. The German Foreign Ministry stated that the decision aligns with similar precautionary measures taken by allied nations and is being carried out in close coordination with them. Despite the evacuation, the German Embassy in Tehran remains operational through mobile units and continues to provide consular services to German nationals who remain in or visit Iran. Egypt condemns Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities: FM Abdelatty at OIC meeting - Foreign Affairs
Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, has condemned Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, warning that they violate international humanitarian law and relevant United Nations (UN) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolutions. 'Egypt strongly condemns this escalation, as it poses a direct threat to regional and international security and stability,' Abdelatty said during the 51st session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul. He said the Israeli aggression on Iran - a direct violation of international law and the UN Charter - had preempted Washington-Tehran talks brokered by Oman, aimed at reviving diplomacy over Iran's nuclear programme. 'These negotiations aimed to prevent the region from descending into a new wave of escalation and conflict, which would negatively impact all countries in the region.' Abdelatty reiterated that 'there are no military solutions to this crisis,' urging a ceasefire, return to negotiations, and 'halt [to] the current military escalation.' He also called for a comprehensive approach to Iran's nuclear file. He renewed Egypt's call for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, criticizing Israel's refusal to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) or to place its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. The war in Gaza and Palestinian statehood Turning to the war in Gaza, Abdelatty condemned 'the brutal Israeli aggression' on the Strip and warned of efforts to displace Palestinians forcibly. 'The OIC has always played a pivotal role in supporting the Palestinian cause,' he said. He insisted that regional peace cannot be achieved without 'ending the occupation and establishing a Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.' Abdelatty stressed that the Palestinian cause remains at the forefront of Egypt's foreign policy priorities, in line with its historic role in defending Arab and Islamic rights. Cairo has been working alongside Doha to push for a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid. 'Since the beginning of the brutal Israeli aggression on Gaza, Egypt has worked to reach a sustainable ceasefire, in cooperation with Qatar, and to deliver humanitarian aid to the Strip,' he said, citing the worsening humanitarian crisis for more than two million Palestinians. He praised regional and international support for Palestinian rights. He welcomed OIC support for Egypt's Arab-Islamic plan for Gaza's recovery, which he said should begin 'as soon as a ceasefire is reached. " He also welcomed convening a high-level international conference in Cairo to support the plan. Regional instability FM Abdelatty also addressed other Middle East crises. 'Egypt condemns the repeated Israeli violations of Syrian and Lebanese sovereignty,' he said, calling for the immediate withdrawal from the Golan Heights and other Syrian territories, as well as from southern Lebanon, and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. On Libya, he stressed the importance of an inclusive political process and simultaneous elections alongside the departure of foreign forces. He said Egypt remains committed to protecting Libya's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Regarding Sudan, Abdelatty said Egypt supports a Sudanese-owned political process free from any external interference and would continue cooperating with regional partners to stabilize the country. He also affirmed Egypt's support for Somalia's security and called for broader international backing. He also stressed the need for a political settlement in Yemen to end the humanitarian crisis and preserve the country's unity. On the summit's sidelines, Abdelatty participated in an Arab League coordination meeting and held talks with counterparts from Tunisia, Somalia, Chad, Gambia, Gabon, and Djibouti.
