Woman raped by 4 men in Odisha's Mayurbhanj; 3rd such incident in state this week
Odisha has hit headlines for a series of alleged disturbing sexual assault cases, with three gang rapes reported across the state in the last few days. In the latest case, a 31-year-old woman from Mayurbhanj district was allegedly raped by four men known to her family, PTI news agency quoted police as saying on Thursday.
According to the complaint lodged by the victim's husband, the accused entered the house when he and other family members were away. The incident took place in a village under the jurisdiction of Baripada Sadar police station on Monday night, PTI quoted officials as saying.
The four men allegedly took the woman to another location in the area covered by a different police station and raped her, they said.
After the assault, they reportedly threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident. The woman was later admitted to a government hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. Her condition is said to be stable.
Baripada Sadar police station inspector-in-charge Aditya Prasad Jena said that the victim has identified all four accused, but they are currently absconding. 'A special team has been formed to trace and arrest the accused,' Jena said.
The incident comes amid other similar crimes reported this week. On Sunday, a 20-year-old college student was allegedly raped by around 10 men at Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district while celebrating the Raja festival with a friend.
The police have arrested all 10 accused, including four minors. The six adults have been identified as the key perpetrators. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has asked the Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure swift and time-bound investigations.

In a third case, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped, murdered, and her body was found hanging from a tree in Keonjhar district on Tuesday. The minor went missing on Monday night after going out of her house to relieve herself. Two persons have been detained in connection with the case, said Laxmikant Pradhan, the inspector-in-charge of Pandapada police station.

Man picked up by cops for questioning tries to flee in Chennai, injured
CHENNAI: A migrant worker, taken in for questioning by the Velachery police, is undergoing treatment in a government hospital after he allegedly tried to escape by jumping off the terrace of a building on Wednesday. The worker, Raja (30), a native of Uttar Pradesh, was picked up by a police patrol team near Vijayanagar in Velachery on Wednesday after they received a complaint about a person roaming in the locality with a piece of cloth wrapped around his face. Police said he was questioned in the Velachery police station but they were unable to understand as he spoke only in Hindi. An hour later, he said he wanted to use the toilet and was allowed to do so. However, he ran to the terrace of the three-storey building and tried to flee by jumping on to a tree nearby. In his hurry, the police said, he didn't realise that the branch couldn't take his weight and it snapped, which brought him to a steep fall causing a head injury. He was later taken to a hospital. Police reviewed the CCTV footage to check if he had attempted suicide, but found he was trying to escape.

PMLA court grants bail to aide of Dawood's brother
MUMBAI: A special court constituted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has granted bail to Israd Sayyed, an aide of Iqbal Kaskar, the younger brother of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, in connection with a money laundering case. The extortion complaint had alleged that in 2017, Kaskar and his associates extorted ₹ 30 lakh in cash and a flat worth ₹ 60 lakh in the Neopolis building in Thane from local builder Suresh Jain. Kaskar and his aides allegedly threatened the builder using Dawood's name and took the flat in the name of Mumtaz Ejaj Shaikh alias Raju, a close associate of Iqbal. The builder had filed an FIR at the Kasarvadavali police station, claiming that Kaskar's associates made repeated visits and continued to pressurise him. Based on the FIR, the ED initiated a money laundering investigation on September 26, 2017, and filed a chargesheet in 2022. Sayyed's advocate submitted that he is innocent and has committed no crime. The defence stated that he was acquitted under the original MCOCA case based on which the ED case was registered. Relying on the ground of parity, the defence argued that Kaskar has already been granted bail by the high court in the same case. The prosecution argued that Sayyed cannot avail the ground of parity as he threatened Mehta and extorted one flat and ₹ 20 lakhs from him. The court observed that the role of Sayyed is similar to that of Kaskar, who was released on bail by the high court. The court said that Sayyed is also acquitted in the MCOCA case, which is the predicate offence. The special sessions judge, Mahesh K Jadhav, in an order passed on June 16, said, 'The applicant is also in jail for a long time,' and held that Sayyed is entitled to be released on bail on the grounds of parity.

Court calls for former RPF constable's medical report
Jun 21, 2025 08:24 AM IST Mumbai: A sessions court has called for the medical report of Chetan Singh Chaudhary, a former Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable accused of shooting dead four passengers on board the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express on the night of July 31, 2023. Chetan Singh Chaudhary (PTI) While one of those dead was Chaudhary's senior, with whom he had an argument prior to the shootings, the others were all identified as Muslim by their beards and then shot. Chaudhary's plea for bail citing 'temporary insanity' was rejected in December 2023. The sessions court had called for Chaudhary's medical report earlier too, on May 23. But it was never submitted as the judge hearing the case got transferred and the court was without a judge. Friday saw the resumption of court proceedings in the trial after a gap of almost a month. Chaudhary's trial commenced last November, when he was lodged in Akola Central Jail and attended court proceedings via video conferencing. In February this year, finding his behavior odd, the Akola jail authorities took him to Akola Central Hospital, where doctors advised that he be taken to Thane Mental Hospital for a proper examination. The 34-year-old former constable has been in Thane Mental Hospital since February 20. On March 12, the court ordered a stop to the trial since Chaudhary could not be present even through video conferencing. Four witnesses, including two RPF constables on duty with him that night, have so far testified. With a new judge having taken over, the court on Friday ordered that Choudhary's medical report be presented in court by the next date, July 3.
