TSG win team general classification at Tour of Kumano as Bregnhoj narrowly misses yellow
KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) scored a timely morale boost ahead of next week's Tour of Japan after winning the team general classification at the Tour of Kumano in Japan today (May 11).
TSG topped the timesheets with a total time of 33 hours, 21 minutes and 20 seconds in the UCI 2.2 tour.
Wanty-Nippo-ReUz (Belgium) came in second overall (+2:39s) while JCL Team Ukyo (Japan) were third (+3:46s).
TSG's Mathias Bregnhoj came in a close second (+8s) to Team Solution Tech-Vini Fantini's Mark Stewart in the individual general classification.
Stewart took the overall win on 11:06:20s while Utsonomiya Blitzen's Oka Atsushi was third (+48s).
Vadim Pronskiy, Anatoliy Budiak, Aiman Cahyadi, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Amirull Fakhruddin Mazuki were the other TSG riders that raced in the Tour of Kumano.
Bregnhoj is hoping to go one better at the Tour of Japan (UCI 2.2) on May 18-25.
"To be honest, second place (individual GC) in the Tour of Kumano wasn't what we came for," said Bregnhoj.
"I always want to win the races we go for but we were up against a strong leader (Stewart) from Vini Fantini.
"I had an idea of how I wanted to close the gap in the final stage and tried my best in what was a tough race.
"But overall, to come second is still good I think. I am really looking forward to the Tour of Japan where I hope to be competing for the win again."
The 29-year-old climber was also third in the climbers classification on 15 points. JCL Team Ukyo's Nicolo Garibbo (32 points) was first while Kinan Racing Team's Nathan Earle (18pts) was second.
Bregnhoj had joined TSG at the start of the season. He competed for Portuguese side Sabgal-Anicolor last season.

Mascherano could be boosted by the return to full fitness of Spanish full-back Jordi Alba who missed the draw against Al Ahly with injury and played the last 11 minutes against Porto. "Physically, I feel good. Obviously, I was out for three weeks without playing, but honestly, it doesn't feel like a big gap since there was an international break during that time. I didn't really miss much. Now we'll see what the coach decides," he said. "Playing against elite teams only sharpens us as a team, and if we reach the knockout rounds, just imagine how high our ceiling could be. I really believe we're doing things the right way, and we have to keep it going," he said.

Eustaquio juggles duties with Porto and Canada
JUNE: Portuguese club Porto's squad for the Club World Cup includes midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, the captain of Canada, who is also listed in his national team's roster for the ongoing CONCACAF Gold Cup being held in the United States. Having a player represent both his club and national team in two official competitions at the same time is a rare occurrence in football history. Porto began their campaign in the revamped tournament with a goalless draw against Brazil's Palmeiras last Monday in East Rutherford, just one day before Canada's Gold Cup opener in Vancouver. With the Gold Cup jointly hosted by Canada and the U.S., and the Canadian team moving on to Houston, for the rest of their group stage matches, the possibility of Eustaquio joining the squad became realistic, provided Porto's journey in the Club World Cup ends. The inclusion of the 28-year-old Eustaquio in both squads comes at a time when many players are wary of fatigue at the end of the season. Porto did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
