TSG win team general classification at Tour of Kumano as Bregnhoj narrowly misses yellow
KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) scored a timely morale boost ahead of next week's Tour of Japan after winning the team general classification at the Tour of Kumano in Japan today (May 11).
TSG topped the timesheets with a total time of 33 hours, 21 minutes and 20 seconds in the UCI 2.2 tour.
Wanty-Nippo-ReUz (Belgium) came in second overall (+2:39s) while JCL Team Ukyo (Japan) were third (+3:46s).
TSG's Mathias Bregnhoj came in a close second (+8s) to Team Solution Tech-Vini Fantini's Mark Stewart in the individual general classification.
Stewart took the overall win on 11:06:20s while Utsonomiya Blitzen's Oka Atsushi was third (+48s).
Vadim Pronskiy, Anatoliy Budiak, Aiman Cahyadi, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Amirull Fakhruddin Mazuki were the other TSG riders that raced in the Tour of Kumano.
Bregnhoj is hoping to go one better at the Tour of Japan (UCI 2.2) on May 18-25.
"To be honest, second place (individual GC) in the Tour of Kumano wasn't what we came for," said Bregnhoj.
"I always want to win the races we go for but we were up against a strong leader (Stewart) from Vini Fantini.
"I had an idea of how I wanted to close the gap in the final stage and tried my best in what was a tough race.
"But overall, to come second is still good I think. I am really looking forward to the Tour of Japan where I hope to be competing for the win again."
The 29-year-old climber was also third in the climbers classification on 15 points. JCL Team Ukyo's Nicolo Garibbo (32 points) was first while Kinan Racing Team's Nathan Earle (18pts) was second.
Bregnhoj had joined TSG at the start of the season. He competed for Portuguese side Sabgal-Anicolor last season.

Mascherano urges Miami to embrace 'historical' chance
MIAMI: Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano says Monday's meeting with Brazil's Palmeiras in the final game of Club World Cup Group A is a historical moment for the MLS club and says his team should relish the game. Miami's shock win over Porto, secured via a brilliant free-kick from Lionel Messi, has left them with a chance of making it to the last 16 of the tournament. And while the club, which only began playing five years ago, would advance with a draw, their Argentine coach doesn't want his players leaving anything to chance. "We're facing possibly one of the most important games in the history of our club. Above all, let that fill us with enthusiasm to be able to play it, let it not be a burden but an excitement and a challenge for this group of players who have been doing well up until now," said Mascherano. "It would be a big mistake if we went into it thinking about not playing it and only about the result. I think that when you think about the result certain things can happen during the game that make it very difficult to get back into the game," he said. "In the end, our idea is to go and win the game like we've always done, like every time we go into a game, whether it's in the Club World Cup, MLS, the Champions League, or any other competition we're involved in," he said. But while Miami, whose form in MLS was patchy heading into the tournament, may be confident after beating Portuguese opposition in Atlanta, Mascherano also cautioned against being too gung-ho. "We clearly want to win it through a plan. We don't go crazy, knowing that we have to minimise many of Palmeiras' strengths and try to take advantage of and expose their weaknesses" he said. Mascherano could be boosted by the return to full fitness of Spanish full-back Jordi Alba who missed the draw against Al Ahly with injury and played the last 11 minutes against Porto. "Physically, I feel good. Obviously, I was out for three weeks without playing, but honestly, it doesn't feel like a big gap since there was an international break during that time. I didn't really miss much. Now we'll see what the coach decides," he said. "Playing against elite teams only sharpens us as a team, and if we reach the knockout rounds, just imagine how high our ceiling could be. I really believe we're doing things the right way, and we have to keep it going," he said.

Eustaquio juggles duties with Porto and Canada
JUNE: Portuguese club Porto's squad for the Club World Cup includes midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, the captain of Canada, who is also listed in his national team's roster for the ongoing CONCACAF Gold Cup being held in the United States. Having a player represent both his club and national team in two official competitions at the same time is a rare occurrence in football history. Porto began their campaign in the revamped tournament with a goalless draw against Brazil's Palmeiras last Monday in East Rutherford, just one day before Canada's Gold Cup opener in Vancouver. With the Gold Cup jointly hosted by Canada and the U.S., and the Canadian team moving on to Houston, for the rest of their group stage matches, the possibility of Eustaquio joining the squad became realistic, provided Porto's journey in the Club World Cup ends. The flight from East Rutherford to Houston takes about three hours. "(It's) allowed by FIFA and CONCACAF," Canada's media office told Reuters. "Eustaquio was named to both rosters a few weeks back, and if fit and able, he will join Canada Soccer's Men's National Team following Porto's conclusion at the Club World Cup," the national team added in an email. The inclusion of the 28-year-old Eustaquio in both squads comes at a time when many players are wary of fatigue at the end of the season. Porto did not respond to Reuters' request for comment. The Portuguese side wraps up the group stage with a match against Egypt's Al Ahly on Monday. It remains unclear whether they will progress to the knockout rounds. Canada, meanwhile, crushed Honduras 6–0, and drew 1-1 with Curacao on Sunday. They conclude the group stage against El Salvador on June 24. Eustaquio came off the bench in the draw against Palmeiras and the 2–1 loss to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.
