DK Suresh sets sights on KMF chair, ignites Congress turf war

Time of India27-05-2025

Bengaluru: DK Suresh may have engineered a win for Congress-backed candidates in polls to Bangalore Milk Union Ltd (Bamul) board, a move that has strengthened the former Lok Sabha MP's bid to secure the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) chairman post, but rather than be a source of joy for his party, it has reignited a factional feud within.
Supporters of deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar are pushing for his brother Suresh to head KMF, while chief minister Siddaramaiah's camp is backing Malur MLA KY Nanje Gowda. The clash is deepening tensions in the party, already strained by the reported unresolved issue of a power-sharing pact. The situation is further complicated by current KMF chairman LBP Bheema Naik's claim that Siddaramaiah had assured him of another term.
KMF governs 16 milk unions in the state and as per its bylaws, chairpersons of unions become directors on its board. A KMF chairman is elected from among them. So far, 15 of the 16 unions have completed elections. The final one — Kolar Milk Union Ltd (Komul) — will vote on June 25. The KMF chairman election will likely be in the first week of July.
Bamul's new board will elect its chairperson on June 10. With 11 of 14 members backed by Congress, Suresh is expected to take over.
BJP has two members on the board and JD(S) has one.
"We have Suresh at the forefront. We need his presence to strengthen KMF," said HS Rajkumar, outgoing Bamul chairman. "Party seniors may have promised somebody in the context of that time, but circumstances have changed now. Suresh will be elected chairman. Nobody can stop him."
Shivakumar appears determined to bring his brother back into the spotlight after his 2024 Lok Sabha defeat to BJP from Bangalore Rural and the KMF post appears ideal.
It is politically significant, since the federation oversees 25 lakh milk producers across Karnataka. It has historically been a powerful platform too. Former PM HD Deve Gowda's son HD Revanna led KMF for 13 years until 2009, using it to strengthen rural and Vokkaliga base of JD(S).
Shivakumar now appears to be eyeing a similar strategy.
"Many want me to take over as KMF chairman," said Suresh. "But that requires due procedure and consensus among various stakeholders, including party seniors.
Let us wait and see."
However, Siddaramaiah loyalists are pushing back. They have reportedly urged the CM not to yield to pressure from Shivakumar's camp. Urban development minister Byrathi Suresh, a Siddaramaiah supporter, recently said the CM will serve a full five-year term, challenging an alleged power-sharing formula.
Meanwhile, Nanje Gowda remains firm on his claim. "Even the deputy CM assured me of the post. I hope he and the CM will not go back on their word. I've served the dairy sector for 38 years and I deserve the post," he said.

Minority quota hike only after fresh housing targets by govt

Bengaluru: The govt's decision to hike minority reservation in housing from 10% to 15% is likely to be implemented only once chief minister Siddaramaiah allocates "targets" for the housing department and is unlikely to impact the current situation. Housing and minority welfare minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan defended the govt's move and reiterated that the cabinet decision was based on central govt directives. "The state has no role to play in this quota hike," Khan said. "The central govt directed us to implement the 2006 Sachar Committee report which recommended a 15% housing quota for minorities. The chief secretary received written communication from the Centre in 2019, followed by directions from the National Minority Commission in 2021 when BJP was at the helm." Khan said the hike in quota can only be implemented when fresh targets are fixed for the housing department. "At present, Siddaramaiah has given us the green signal to complete ongoing work pending from 2013," he said. "The fresh quota is only prospective." Housing department officials say the 15% quota will not be "added" but will be "offset" from one district to another. "Say, for example, only 3% of the quota is filled in Chikkaballapur, then the remaining 7% from Chikkaballapur will be shifted to Bidar, where there is a demand for 15% from minorities," said an official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Cardiologist Says This Food Can Do Wonders For Your Health Gundry MD Learn More Undo Emphasising this, chief minister Siddaramaiah said: "In many panchayats, the population of minorities is less than 10%. To ensure optimal use of targets, we have allowed the gap from these panchayats to be used elsewhere, subject to the 15% cap in the unreserved section." Meanwhile, Khan said the total expenditure for ongoing work is about Rs 9,500 crore under various housing schemes and hinted that the quota hike will not be implemented anytime soon due to a paucity of funds. Appeasement, says BJP BJP Friday continued to target the govt over its decision to increase reservation in housing for minorities from 10% to 15%, calling it "minority appeasement" and pandering to its core vote bank of the Muslim community. While criticising the decision, former chief minister BS Yediyurappa Friday, said: "We are not against minorities, but supporting them beyond a point is unpardonable. The govt is supposed to help Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Instead, it is creating confusion like Tughlaq darbar." He challenged CM Siddaramaiah and his govt to show where, in part of the state, even a kilometre of road was built. He claimed infrastructure development has come to a standstill. "Irrigation projects have been stalled and there is no one to listen to people's concerns," he said. Meanwhile, his son and party state president BY Vijayendra drew parallels between the state govt and the NDA govt under Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre where "both Hindus and minorities alike are being served justice". He accused Siddaramaiah of practising "devise politics", saying: "The CM's conduct demeans the dignity of his post. People will give him a befitting reply." tnn

"She's Wrong": Trump On Spy Chief Tulsi Gabbard's Iran Nuclear Remark

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that his Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, was wrong in suggesting there was no evidence Iran is building a nuclear weapon. Trump contested intelligence assessments relayed earlier this year by his spy chief that Tehran was not building a nuclear weapon when he spoke with reporters at an airport in Morristown, New Jersey. "She's wrong," Trump said. In March, Gabbard testified to Congress that the U.S. intelligence community continued to believe that Tehran was not building a nuclear weapon. "The (intelligence community) continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon," she said. On Friday, Gabbard said in a post on the social media platform X that: "America has intelligence that Iran is at the point that it can produce a nuclear weapon within weeks to months, if they decide to finalize the assembly. President Trump has been clear that can't happen, and I agree." She said the media has taken her March testimony "out of context" and was trying to "manufacture division." The White House has said Trump would weigh involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict over the next two weeks. On Tuesday, Trump made similar comments to reporters about Gabbard's assessment. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has justified a week of airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets by saying Tehran was on the verge of having a warhead. Iran denies developing nuclear weapons, saying its uranium enrichment program is only for peaceful purposes. In March, Gabbard described Iran's enriched uranium stockpile as unprecedented for a state without such weapons and said the government was watching the situation closely. She also said that Iran had started discussing nuclear weapons in public, "emboldening nuclear weapons advocates within Iran's decision-making apparatus." A source with access to U.S. intelligence reports told Reuters that the assessment presented by Gabbard has not changed. They said U.S. spy services also judged that it would take up to three years for Iran to build a warhead with which it could hit a target of its choice. Some experts, however, believe it could take Iran a much shorter time to build and deliver an untested crude nuclear device, although there would be no guarantee it would work. Trump has frequently disavowed the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies, which he and his supporters have charged - without providing proof - are part of a "deep state" cabal of U.S. officials opposed to his presidency. Gabbard, a fierce Trump loyalist, has been among the president's backers who have aired such allegations. The Republican president repeatedly clashed with U.S. spy agencies during his first term, including over an assessment that Moscow worked to sway the 2016 presidential vote in his favor and his acceptance of Russian President Vladimir Putin's denials.

PM Modi targets RJD, Cong in marker for Bihar elections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a meeting in Siwan, Bihar, targeted the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress, talked up his National Demoratic Alliance's development credentials , and inaugurated projects worth ₹ 11,000 crore from a stage replete with eight Union ministers, the state's chief minister and two deputy chief ministers, providing a curtain raiser to assembly elections due later this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi waves to the crowd on his way to address a public rally with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary in Siwan, Bihar. (Santosh Kumar/HT) The Congress and the RJD hurt Bihar's pride and kept the state poor due to mafia raj, goonda raj and corruption, Modi said , taking a pointed shot at RJD's Lalu Prasad and alleging that the former chief minister insulted BR Ambedkar. The PM was speaking after laying the foundation stone of and inaugurating multiple development projects worth ₹ 11,000 crore. Modi, who is on a three-state tour, inaugurated the new Vaishali-Deoria railway line and a Vande Bharat Express between Patliputra and Gorakhpur via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah. He also flagged off a state-of-the-art locomotive - the first built at a plant in Marhowra in Saran district – for export to the Republic of Guinea. Modi said the Congress did not allow Bihar to move out of poverty and the worst sufferers were Dalit, Mahadalit, backward classes and Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), while in the last 11 years a record 250 million Indians moved out of poverty. 'Bihar under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar played a key role in it, as 3.75-crore (37.5 million) people from the state pulled themselves out of poverty. Despite so many years of independence, half the population lived below the poverty line. People struggled to beat poverty, as they could not find a way. The state was reduced to a migration centre and destined to live with the misfortune of poverty. Now, it is time to be wary of the same forces, who kept it poor, as they are desperate for power while the state has prepared the launchpad for rapid growth,' he added. Bihar governor Arif Mohammad Khan, chief minister Nitish Kumar, Union ministers Jitan Ram Manjhi, Giriraj Singh, Lalan Singh, Chirag Paswan, Ramnath Thakur, Nityanand Rai, Satishchandra Dubey, and Raj Bhushan Choudhary, deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, state health minister Mangal Pandey and former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha were present on the occasion. This is PM's fourth visit to Bihar this year and third since April 24 in what is viewed as a build up for the crucial state elections scheduled in October-November. He reached the venue in a road show, waving to the people from an open vehicle along with CM Nitish Kumar and Deputy CM Choudhary. Siwan is the birthplace of India's first President Dr Rajendra Prasad. Modi, who did not mention RJD's Prasad by name, also referred to a recent controversy where a portrait of Ambedkar was placed close to the feet of the ailing septuagenarian on his 78th birthday on June 11. 'Ambedkar was against dynasty rule. But they (RJD and its allies) do not like it. So they have his portrait placed at their feet. On my way, I saw posters demanding an apology for this insult to Babasaheb,' said Modi. 'But there has been no apology. This is because they hold Dalits in contempt. In contrast, Modi has Babasaheb in his heart and would like to keep his portrait close to his chest,' he added. According to the RJD, the controversy arose because of the camera angle at Prasad's residence. The party has said Prasad had his feet on a sofa because of 'medical advice', and a supporter stood close carrying the portrait of India's first law minister. Modi said that the panja (or hand – the Congress's symbol) and the lantern (the RJD's symbol) worked with a motive of 'Parivar ka Saath aur Parivar ka Vikas' (Support to family, growth to family), while the NDA works for Sabka saath, Sabka Vikas (inclusive development for all). He warned that those who brought 'jungle raj' to Bihar were looking for an opportunity to repeat their old deeds. 'You have to be very cautious for the bright future of your children. People who are ready to put the brakes on Bihar's developmental journey have to be kept at bay, as a prosperous Bihar is important for a prosperous India,' he added. Remembering Rajendra Prasad, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, and social reformer Braj Kishor Prasad, Modi said Siwan was the land that lent strength to democracy and the Constitution and played a big role in the freedom movement. 'We are trying to take the same spirit forward with inclusive growth so that nobody is discriminated against and even the world recognises India's growth journey to be the third largest economy. I have faith in your abilities, as you are the ones who ended jungle Raj and then worked with the NDA to put the state on track,' he added. The PM said that the Marhowra rail factory was an example of the kind of Bihar the NDA striving to create. 'With the export of locomotives, Saran, which was abandoned by the RJD as backward, has made its place on the global map. Jungle Raj had stalled the growth engine, but now Bihar's engine will run in Africa. Bihar will be a big centre for Make in India and contribute to the nation's growth,' Modi said. The PM said in the last 10-11 years, over 55,000 kms of rural roads were built, 15 million houses got power connection and tap water, 45,000 common service centres were started and now there was a wave of start-ups in towns and cities. CM Nitish, who has been critical of the RJD over its governance track record, took potshots at the main rival, without naming the party. 'Did the ones in power until we took over care for governance? People were scared of stepping out of their homes because of the law and order situation. Such a contrasting sight today when we have boys, girls, and so many women moving freely,'he said. Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Tejashwi Yadav blunted the PM's attack and asked him to stop misleading the people. 'Why is Bihar still grappling with poverty, unemployment, migration, pitiable state of health and education, gross nepotism in appointments, poor state of industrialisation? He[Modi] has no answer, but he can only mislead. The crowd was forcibly assembled for the rally,' he said.
