IOI Corp's FFB growth target maintained at 2.5pct for FY2025
KUALA LUMPUR: IOI Corporation Bhd is maintaining its fresh fruit bunch (FFB) output growth target at 2.5 per cent for the financial year 2025 (FY25), said Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB Research).
According to the bank, FFB production has rebounded both month-on-month and year-on-year since March 2025, supported by favourable weather conditions.
"The output recovery has helped to narrow the group's year-to-date (YTD) FFB output decline to just 0.3 per cent for the first ten months of FY25.
"Management indicated that the recovery trend is likely to continue in the coming months, potentially allowing IOI Corp to exceed its initial FY25 FFB output growth guidance of one to two per cent.
"As such, we maintain our FY25 FFB output growth assumption of 2.5 per cent," it said in a note.
Meanwhile, HLIB Research noted that several factors, including lower FFB output, the minimum wage hike effective February 2025, and a higher windfall profit levy, contributed to a 1.3 per cent YoY increase in IOI Corp's crude palm oil (CPO) production cost for the third quarter of FY25 (3Q25), raising it to RM2,530 per metric tonne.
This brought the average CPO production cost for the first nine months of FY25 to RM2,104 per metric tonne, representing a 1.5 per cent decline compared to the same period last year.
Given the anticipated strong FFB output in 4Q25, the firm said management remains confident in keeping the full-year CPO production cost below RM2,100 per metric tonne.
Furthermore, HLIB Research said IOI Corp's decent performance in the manufacturing segment is expected to be sustained into 4Q25, if not improved further.
It added that earnings at the manufacturing segment improved QoQ in 3Q25, with a profit of RM81.4 million, primarily driven by margin expansion at the refinery sub-segment, which more than mitigated weakness at the oleochemical and speciality fats sub-segments.
"Management shared that earnings at the manufacturing segment should at least track 3Q25's performance (if not better), supported by sustained performance at the refining sub-segment arising from stable margins and improving availability of feedstock.
"This includes gradual demand recovery for oleochemical products, albeit input prices remained elevated, as well as an improving contribution from the speciality fats sub-segment (as production normalised from the loss of production)," it said.
On that note, HLIB Research also highlighted that IOI Corp's accelerated replanting programme, covering 8,000 to 9,000 hectares per annum since FY19, will continue into FY26.
This is expected to reduce the group's average age profile to approximately 13 years by the end of FY26.
The firm also noted that construction of the zero-waste paper pulp plant, undertaken through Nextgreen IOI Pulp Sdn Bhd (NIP), a 45 per cent owned joint venture unit of IOI Corp, is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026 (1H26), with completion targeted by the end of 2027.
Upon completion, it said the facility will have an initial annual production capacity of 150,000 metric tonnes of chemical bleached pulp.

Positive Q2 earnings seen for listed construction companies
KUALA LUMPUR: Listed construction companies may see earnings rising in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025, after posting steady growths in Q1, industry observers said. They, however, said while job fows may steadilly pick up, margins will remain under pressure in some cases. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said most companies delivered Q1 earnings that reflected stable progress on ongoing projects and effective cost management, despite a still-cautious operating environment. One of the key outperformers during the quarter was Sunway Construction Group Bhd (SunCon). The company stood out for its steady order book execution, strong project pipeline, and operational efficiency, Thong said. Looking ahead, he expects job flows to gradually pick up, supported by the rollout of major infrastructure projects such as the estimated RM17 billion Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT). However, he said the tangible impact on company earnings may only be seen further down the line. "We could see progress recognition begin in late 2025 or early 2026. Earnings from these projects will likely come through in early 2026," he told Business Times. Another industry analyst concurred that overall, most listed construction firms had met or slightly exceeded market expectations in Q1. However, he noted that margins remained under pressure in some cases due to elevated material and labour costs. "We saw that SunCon did well with solid execution and steady wins that kept them ahead. Gamuda Bhd also stood out, thanks to their overseas projects in Australia and Taiwan. "The group's geographically diversified operations are paying off, providing a buffer against the slower pace of local job flows," he noted. The analyst said the Penang LRT project provides clear visibility for the sector's medium-term pipeline, although actual disbursement and contract awards may only materialise meaningfully from late 2025. CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd said the construction sector reported another steady set of results during the recently concluded Q1 reporting season. "Among the construction stocks within our coverage, four reported results that met expectations, while IJM Corp Bhd outperformed." The firm highlighted that none of the construction companies incurred any major provisions or impairments for their projects. Overall, CIMB Securities maintained an "Overweight" call on the construction sector, and project calendar year 2025 earnings growth of 10 per cent year-on-year. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the firm expect sector earnings growth to remain on an upward trajectory in Q2, underpinned by higher construction site activities post the festive breaks in Q1.. Likewise, it said order book visibility is improving alongside the gradual rollout of big-ticket public projects and the potential award of up to six large-scale data centre facilities worth about RM2 billion each over the next two to three quarters. The firm expects the pace of job awards in the construction industry to gather momentum ahead of the 13th Malaysia Plan, which is set to be tabled in July. Nevertheless, it said the expanded Sales and Service Tax scope could re-ignite near-term uncertainties concerning the margins of ongoing non-residential construction jobs of lower value. "We reinstate IJM Corp as one of our top large-cap construction picks alongside Gamuda. "IJM Corp is in the final stages of converting RM6 billion-RM8 billion worth of ongoing bids, and recently received the green light to proceed with the RM1.4 billion New Pantai Expressway extension," it noted. Meanwhile, CIMB Securities said Gamuda remains on track to meet its end-2025 order book target of RM40 billion-RM45 billion, supported by around RM24 billion in high-conviction tenders. These include up to six data centre-related bids, each valued at about RM2 billion. For alpha plays, the firm highlighted Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB), which had secured RM5.6 billion worth of new jobs year to date. It added that there is upside risk to MRCB's FY25 new order book target of RM6 billion, citing potential wins from the RM1 billion KL Sentral redevelopment and an active tender book of RM1.7 billion. As for small-cap exposure, the firm pointed to Econpile Holdings Bhd, citing its potential to benefit from a reacceleration in larger-scale piling works.

Kossan ramps up ESG drive
PETALING JAYA: Analysts view Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd 's initiatives in addressing environmental impact as a key component of the group's long-term operational strategy, with recent year-on-year improvements underscoring its commitment to sustainable manufacturing. According to Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research, the group achieved measurable gains in emissions, water and waste management in 2024, despite broader challenges in the glove sector. These gains are said to align with the group's Kossan Sustainability Strategy and Blueprint 2035, which replaces its previous L.I.V.E. 12 framework and introduces more actionable targets to meet global environmental, social and governance (ESG) expectations. Kossan has set a target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity by 53.6% by 2035. HLIB Research noted that Kossan's technical rubber products division had achieved a 3.7% year-on-year reduction in emissions intensity to 2.37 carbon dioxide equivalent per kilogramme (CO2e/kg), driven by ongoing energy-saving measures. However, the group's overall emissions intensity remained flattish at 0.023 tonnes CO2e for every 1,000 pieces of gloves in 2024, due to the inclusion of fugitive emissions and the adoption of updated national emission factors for Scope 2 calculations. In water management, Kossan aims to cut water consumption intensity by 35% by 2035. HLIB Research kept its earnings forecasts for financial year 2025 (FY25) to FY27 and maintained its 'buy' call with an unchanged target price of RM2.30, citing the group's recovery remains on track.

Johari: Hire local TVET grads or no foreign workers for plantations
KUALA KANGSAR: The Plantation and Commodities Ministry (MPIC) has mandated that plantation industry players must first hire graduates from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes before considering the employment of foreign workers. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said industry players must provide proof of their efforts to hire TVET graduates to the ministry before they are permitted to recruit foreign workers. 'We are currently facing a situation where many industries are unwilling to hire graduates who have completed their training. They are reluctant to provide these students with the opportunity to gain practical experience because they prefer to take the easier route. 'Although the government has approved foreign workers for the plantation sector, I will not allow it unless industry players contribute to our local youth,' he said when met at the Dialog@MPIC session here today. Johari said the ministry will train about 250 TVET students annually in the plantation sector, and they will be placed in the industry based on the specific needs of the industry players. He said industry players must train these students until they become skilled and future specialists in the plantation sector. 'I want to commend Sime Darby and FGV for their dedicated initiatives to provide accommodation and decent salaries for young individuals who did not attend university. These youths can earn a salary of RM2,500 if they develop their skills and complete a TVET Level 3 qualification, and in another eight months, they could earn up to RM3,500. '...we must support these students in developing their careers. Otherwise, we're abandoning these youths, and that's not what we promised. Some industry players even refuse to hire them, and that's why I want to enforce this prerequisite. Currently, we depend on nearly 260,000 foreign workers to manage our plantations,' he said. Johari said the sector is vital as it represents the world's third-largest export industry, and within the national commodity sector, Malaysia exports approximately RM168 billion. He emphasised the need for industry players to take responsibility for mentoring and supporting these young talents.
