Shubman Gill 'channels inner Virat Kohli'; Ravi Shastri turns umpire in comm box, but Joe Root has last laugh

Shubman Gill-led India witnessed a plethora of emotions in a matter of minutes in the third and final session on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. From sheer joy to extreme agony, Gill and his team saw the two extremes. It all happened when the visitors thought they had seen the back of Joe Root as the on-field umpire, Paul Reiffel, raised his finger off the bowling of Mohammed Siraj. However, the right-hander went for a review, and the replays showed the ball to be missing the leg stump. When Reiffel gave Root out, Gill charged towards Siraj, and his celebration reminded everyone of Virat Kohli as the Indian captain really had a pumped-up reaction. However, he was brought to reality when the replay popped up on the big screen.
Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri also thought Root was plumb in front. However, the replays shocked him.
Speaking of the entire chain of events, Ian Ward on air said, 'I think he was channelling a little bit of his inner Virat Kohli (celebration of Root wicket). The biggest cheer of the day here at Headingley. When the third umpire asked Paul Reiffel to overturn his decision.'

Shastri, who has seen up close how Root can really hurt India through his knack of scoring big runs, said, 'Yes, and it was Joe Root. You can see how much this wicket means to India. Even my hand went up in the commentary box. Because he's made India pay the price over the years. He wants that. Unfortunately, it was missing.'
Speaking of Siraj, he got the ball to jag back in sharply. Root was unable to get the bat down in time. He failed to connect with the flick shot, and this resulted in the Indian fielders breaking into a huge appeal. Reiffel raised his finger, and Root immediately went for a review.

Speaking of the visuals, Ian Ward said, 'Umpire Ravi Shastri.'
The former India head coach joked about the situation, saying, 'Just goes to show how much I've watched Joe Root bat over the years as coach of India. Just keeps getting hundreds, so even my finger went up for it. And I'm sitting behind the umpire.'
Speaking of the first Test between India and England, the hosts reached the score of 209/3 at stumps on Day 2, still trailing by 262 runs. Ollie Pope and Harry Brook are unbeaten on 100 and 0 respectively for England. For India, Jasprit Bumrah took all three wickets.
Earlier, India posted 471 runs on the board, owing to centuries by Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.

The video began with Pant walking out for his knock before the day. He had not out at 65 at the end of the opening clash. Pant greeted a few people before meeting England head coach Brendon McCullum, who was standing near the pitch alongside pundit Michael Atherton. England Receive Huge Boost For 2nd Test Against India: "Could Be In Mix..."

Injury-prone pacer Jofra Archer could be in the England mix for the second Test against India beginning July 2 as he is set for a red-ball comeback with Sussex at Durham in the County Championship, according to a report. The England pace bowling attack without the likes of Archer and Mark Wood has looked tepid in the opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar series with India, led by new skipper Shubman Gill, scoring 471 runs in the first innings at Leeds. "Jofra Archer will return to red-ball cricket with Sussex -- despite not being named in squad for County Championship match at Durham. If he comes through the match unscathed, he could be in the mix to play in the second Test against India at Edgbaston," said a report in Sky Sports. It said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that the pacer will be in Sussex's travelling group for the four-day fixture beginning later on Sunday. Archer, who played for Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 IPL season, has not been a part of first-class cricket in four years due to injuries. The 30-year-old quick was initially not in the 12-player travelling squad for the County Championship match, raising doubts about his fitness but the ECB and Sussex later said the Barbadian-English cricketer will be travelling for the match at Chester-le-Street. If Archer is part of the playing XI and his body holds up in the red-ball fixture, he could be in contention for the second Test at Edgbaston from July 2 or the third at Lord's from July 10. Archer has only played white-ball cricket for England since 2021 because of recurring elbow and back injuries. He was initially due to make a red-ball comeback for England Lions against India A but a thumb injury, suffered during the IPL, did not heal in time. England skipper Ben Stokes had said earlier this month that Archer, who has 42 wickets in 13 Tests, was keen to return to Test cricket. "Randomly, a couple of times he would just send me a text... I was like, 'Let's just hold it there, alright. I know you're in a good spot right now but let's not just rush into it'. "He's obviously had a horrific time with injuries but he's had some good amount of cricket, albeit in the white-ball formats," Stokes had said. "It's really exciting for England, but also more exciting for Jof (Archer) that he's in a position now where we're able to have a plan in place, and hopefully him get through something to actually be considered for selection for Test cricket."
