Jesse Eisenberg ‘honoured' after being granted Polish citizenship

Independent06-03-2025

Jesse Eisenberg has officially become a citizen of Poland after his film set in the country, A Real Pain, won an Oscar on Sunday.
The drama-comedy follows two mismatched cousins, played by Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin, who travel to Poland following the death of their beloved grandmother, who was a Holocaust survivor.
Culkin, 42, won numerous gongs during awards season for his performance and topped it off at the Oscars where he was awarded Best Supporting Actor. During his acceptance speech, the Succession star shocked his wife by asking if they could have more children.
Eisenberg, who wrote and directed the film, may not have had his own Oscar to celebrate but just a few days later was awarded Polish citizenship by the country's president Andrzej Duda.
Speaking at a ceremony in New York on Tuesday (4 March), the 41-year-old actor said: 'I'm so unbelievably honoured. This is an honour of a lifetime and something I have been very interested in for two decades.'
A Real Pain was inspired by the passing of Eisenberg's great aunt in 2019, who had fled to the United States from Poland in 1938.
'While we were filming this movie in Poland and I was walking the streets and starting to get a little more comfortable in the country, something so obvious occurred to me, which is that my family had lived in this place far longer than we've lived in New York,' Eisenberg added.
'And of course, the history ended so tragically, but in addition to that tragedy of history was also the tragedy that my family didn't feel any connection any more to Poland. And that saddened me and confirmed for me that I really wanted to try to reconnect as much as possible.'
When making the film, Eisenberg was inspired to apply for Polish citizenship, which is available to anyone with direct ancestors who were born in or lived in the country after 1920.
In conclusion, Eisenberg said: 'I really hope that tonight and this ceremony and this amazing honour is the first step in me, on behalf of my family, reconnecting to this beautiful country.'
The Social Network star first announced that he had applied for Polish citizenship in May 2024.
In an interview with Polish publication Głos Wielkopolski, he explained that both his and his wife's families were from Poland. He added that shooting A Real Pain in Poland reminded him of stories he'd heard from family growing up, and made him want to 'create better relationships between Jews and Polish people'.
'I applied for Polish citizenship about nine months ago. Apparently, all the paperwork has already been submitted and I'm waiting for the final signature,' said Eisenberg.
'My family is from the southeast, from Krasnystaw, my wife's [Anna Strout] family is from Łódź. We wanted to have a greater connection to Poland. I would like to work here more.
'Growing up, I've heard stories of the Polish relationship with my Jewish family and all the stories were great: we were best friends with the Poles.'

It's a ploy to manipulate her way back into daughter Tori's (Harriet O'Shea) life. She hatched the plot following a hospital trip to visit sister Grace Black (Tamara Wall). After seeing patients receive treatment, Claire realised she could use this to her advantage. It comes as an unlikely spark seemingly forms between Clare and Dodger Savage (Danny Mac). Dodger has been firmly opposed to Clare due to her role in the exploitation scheme orchestrated by her ex-husband DI Banks (Drew Cain). However, he softens his stance upon learning of Clare's alleged cancer situation. With the undercover cop falling for her deceit, Clare moves on to the next stage of her plan. Namely, making Dodger feel guilty over taking Tori away from Clare - given her current "poor health". Hollyoaks star quits after nine years - and his final scenes have already aired After accomplishing this, the pair then share a heart-to-heart, as Clare says she'd believed her husband was having an affair, not leading an exploitation ring. The two continue to grow close - despite Dodger's sister Sienna (Anna Passey) warning him to steer clear from Clare. Later, the ever-resourceful Clare devises a sneaky plan to get Dodger to her flat - as he apologises for thinking she was involved with her husband's crimes. Feeling like he's falling for Clare, Dodger starts to worry if lines are becoming blurred. As their chemistry intensifies, will Dodger be able to see through her lies? A source said: "Clare's done some pretty bad things in her time but faking cancer is one of the worst. From Hollyoaks to Hollywood James Corden played a caretaker in the early days of the soap. The former American TV host doesn't have much positive to say about his time on the soap, claiming it was "hell on earth." Since his short-lived time on the show he has gone on to bigger things including smash hit comedy Gavin and Stacey. Rachel Shenton joined the soap as aspiring glamour model Mitzeee Minniver in 2010. Over two years her character was sent to prison, got pregnant and had a number of romantic affairs. Since leaving Hollyoaks she has won an Oscar for best live action short film, The Silent Child. Since his departure Emmett has appeared in Peaky Blinders, The Fall, Gangs of London and even appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Emma Rigby joined Hollyoaks when she was 15 as Hannah Ahsworth. Hannah's eating disorder storyline was the first of it's kind on TV while other plots included being caught in a fire, gangland drug dealing and running away. Since leaving the soap in 2010 Emma has gone on to star in ABCs Once Upon a Time in Wonderland as the Red Queen. Other roles include guest appearances in Death In Paradise, Ripper Street and Fresh Meat Nico Mirallegro got his big break with Hollyoaks starring as emo Barry 'Newt' Newton. He left the soap in 2010 and went on to star in My Mad Fat Diary, Our Girl, Rillington Place, The Ark and Common, Penance, as well as the Mike Leigh movie Peterloo and was nominated for a Bafta for his role in period drama The Village. Ricky Whittle used Hollyoaks as a stepping stone to break America. He played one of the soap's resident hunks, Calvin Valentine, from 2006 to 2011 - when he was killed off at his wedding. After leaving the soap Ricky cracked America starring in teen drama The 100 and America Gods. He also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing in 2009. Warren Brown joined Hollyoaks in 2005 for a year as evil Andy Holt. His stint on the show consisted of date rape storylines and a crime spree, before eventually being killed off. After leaving Hollyoaks, Warren became a big hitter in TV playing DS Justin Ripley in Luther, as well as major roles in a number of dramas including Liar, The Responder, Homefront and Good Cop. Wallis Day played Holly Cunningham in the soap for years before leaving. In 2021 Wallis won the role of Batwoman in DC's series, taking over from Ruby Rose. "She uses it to get one over on Mercedes and get her daughter back. "She'll stop at nothing to get Tori home and away from the Blakes. EastEnders actress Laila Morse has famous film star brother

Also known as 'Big Mo', she has been portrayed by actress Laila Morse in the programme, as well as in the spin-offs Slaters in Detention and Pat and Mo. She was introduced in 2000 as the matriarch of the Slater family and appeared for 16 years before departing initially. It wasn't long before she returned, though, as she was reintroduced in 2018 before being written out again in 2021. A post shared by EastEnders (@bbceastenders) However, after a stint of a few episodes in 2022, she was permanently brought back in 2024, alongside great-grandson Freddie (played by Bobby Brazier). With Mo having been a presence on EastEnders for so long, many fans might be aware her actress Laila Morse has a very famous film star for a brother. Laila's younger brother is Gary Oldman, who won the Oscar for Best Actor back in 2018 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. The 67-year-old has appeared in many major films over the years, including in The Fifth Element, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, the Harry Potter series and Oppenheimer, among many others. Gary was also recently knighted as part of the King's Birthday Honours. Some might not be aware that Laila's break into acting is in part thanks to Gary, as he cast her in his 1997 film Nil by Mouth. This was Laila's first foray into acting at the age of 51, and Gary's debut as a filmmaker. She featured alongside Ray Winstone, Kathy Burke and Charlie Creed-Miles. Laila's performance as the character of Janet won her the award of 'Most Promising Newcomer in any Category' at the British Independent Film Awards. Another interesting fact is the link between Gary and the stage name 'Laila Morse', as the actress's real name is Maureen Oldman. When Gary was in a relationship with Isabella Rossellini, she suggested to Maureen to use 'Laila Morse' as a stage name. It is an anagram of 'mia sorella', which translates from Italian as 'my sister'. The unique bit of trivia surrounding Laila and Gary being siblings always provides a lot of interest to EastEnders fans. In a recent post on the EastEnders Reddit page, one person shared images of the two side-by-side saying: "Mo and Gary Oldman being siblings with [sic] never not be funny too me." One person joked in response: "One is the greatest actor of our generation who has inspired millions and is beloved by all. The other is Gary Oldman." Another shared: "I always forget. Then I remember. And it always makes me laugh. I don't know why I find it so funny. But I do." Some people have expressed hope that Gary might make a brief appearance in EastEnders one day due to the link. (If all his other acting work dries up)". Another replied: "It would be so elite, honestly I would love him to appear just for one episode." A third concurred, writing: "It would be awesome if he turned up on the square as Mo's long lost brother."
