Sarawakian students welcome RM200 monthly SRAS assistance

KUCHING (June 18): The Sarawak Rental Assistance Scheme (SRAS), which provides RM200 per month to eligible students, has been well received by Sarawakian students enrolled in higher learning institutions across the state.
According to Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, many students have applied for the scheme, which is implemented by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), following its introduction during outreach programmes at local public and private universities.
'We are pleased to learn from HDC that after our first outreach session, they received a significant number of applications, many of which already been approved,' he said during a press conference at the Sarawak Education Initiative Programme held at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Hall (DeTar Putra), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), yesterday.
The programme is part of a wider state-led effort to raise awareness about various government assistance schemes and improve public access to them.
'For this series, we are focusing on education-related initiatives,' said Fazzrudin, adding that more sessions will be held at other campuses across Sarawak, following previous engagements at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
'This scheme isn't new, but many students may have been unaware of it previously. Our role now is to bridge that gap and ensure these benefits reach them directly.'
When asked whether the scheme would be extended to Sarawakian students studying outside the state, Fazzrudin said such suggestion would be compiled as feedback for the relevant agencies and the Premier.
Meanwhile, Unimas deputy vice-chancellor (Student and Alumni Affairs) Prof Dr Al-Khalid Othman expressed appreciation for the SRAS initiative, noting that more than half of the university's students are Sarawakians, with around 6,000 coming from B40 (low-income) households.
'Students generally pay between RM450 and RM500 per semester for accommodation, depending on room type. This assistance goes a long way in reducing their financial burden,' he said.
He also welcomed a separate contribution of RM40,000 from the state government to support the campus food bank programme, aimed at helping students from low-income households.

Pontianak-Kuching direct flights may resume soon, says Abdul Karim

Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, confirmed the development during a press conference today, saying Indonesia has now agreed to open up its skies for the Pontianak-Kuching sector. 'I'm very happy. It has been announced on that side that they are opening up their skies from Pontianak. 'You see, Indonesia, they have got their own way. The decree must come from the President. I'm not putting the blame on the previous President because we've been asking and asking, please start again the Pontianak-Kuching flight. But it was not given. 'And recently, I was made to understand that they are opening up their skies. So, it's up to the airlines to start operating again. So, probably there are a few that might be looking into it now because I know that sector is a very good sector. It does not benefit Sarawak only. It does not benefit Malaysia only. It also benefits the other side,' he said. Abdul Karim noted that reinstating the route would offer a major convenience for Sarawakians. 'A lot of Sarawakians now, instead of driving four, five hours to Pontianak, they might as well just fly half an hour. And that will definitely benefit the industry, the tourism industry in Pontianak,' he said. When asked whether the Sarawak government would encourage low-cost carriers like AirAsia to take up the route, Abdul Karim confirmed that discussions are ongoing. 'Of course, we will be. Not just AirAsia. Even airlines from Indonesia. Indonesia has got lots of budget airlines. If they are willing to participate in that, of course, we are very, very happy,' he said. He also highlighted growing demand along the Sarawak–Indonesia air corridor. 'You can see now that the flight from Kuching to Jakarta used to be once a day. Now, it's already twice a day. And the loading is very high. Either way. So, there's big potential there,' he said. Miri to host Sarawak Day 2025 celebration from July 20-22

MIRI (June 20): The Sarawak Day 2025 celebration will take place here from July 20 to 22, bringing together a series of events to commemorate the state's history, culture and achievements. Minister of Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin officially announced the schedule and key highlights at a press conference today, where he emphasised the strong commitment of the organising team and expressed confidence in the smooth execution of the event. He disclosed that the Sarawak Protocol, Ceremony and Event Management Unit (UPPANS), under the Premier's Department, has been entrusted with coordinating the celebration in collaboration with various state departments and agencies. 'This year's celebration aims to instil love for our state, honour Sarawak's rich history and the struggle for independence, and celebrate the progress and achievements we have made together,' he said. Lee added that the three-day celebration will feature a wide range of activities that reflect the unity, diversity, and pride of Sarawakians. Among the key programmes are the Sales Carnival and Sarawak Talent Showcase, which will run throughout the celebration period at Miri City Stadium. Spearheaded by the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (Mintred), the event aims to highlight local talents and promote entrepreneurship. On the morning of July 20, a Zumba session will be held at Miri City Stadium from 7.15 am to 10.30 am, organised by the Miri District Office. That same evening, a Multi-Faith Thanksgiving Ceremony will take place at 8pm at the Meritz Hotel, led by the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), in celebration of Sarawak's hallmark of religious harmony. On July 21, a thanksgiving ceremony will be held at 6pm at the At-Taqwa Mosque here, organised by the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (Jais). The final day of the celebration will begin with a Unity Walk at 7am, starting from Miri City Stadium. Organised by the Miri Resident's Office, the walk is intended to symbolise solidarity among Sarawakians of all backgrounds. Later that afternoon, a townhall session will take place at 2pm at the Imperial Hotel here, jointly organised by the Miri Resident's Office and Miri City Council, serving as a platform for public engagement with government leaders. The highlight will be the Sarawak Day Assembly, scheduled for 8pm at Miri City Stadium. Spearheaded by UPPANS and the Miri Resident's Office, the grand finale is expected to draw large crowds in a show of unity, pride, and patriotism. 'The Sarawak Day celebration is not only a commemoration of the past, but also a platform to promote unity, mutual understanding, and collaboration among all Sarawakians. 'This event encourages recognition of the contributions of every community toward Sarawak's development, and aims to strengthen the relationship between the government and the people,' said Lee.
