Mamelodi spaza shop owner murdered, police investigation underway
Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old spaza shop owner in Mamelodi East, Tshwane, following an altercation that occurred yesterday morning.
Pretoria Rekord reports that, according to police, the deceased is believed to be an Ethiopian national.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk says officers from the Mamelodi East Police Station were dispatched to the scene around 08:00 yesterday after receiving reports of a shooting.
'Preliminary investigations indicate that an altercation between the suspect and the victim took place earlier that morning, around 06:00, outside the victim's spaza shop,' he says.
Van Dyk adds that the victim was reportedly sitting inside his white Toyota Corolla at the time of the dispute.
'During the argument, the suspect allegedly drew a firearm and fired several shots through the windscreen of the vehicle, striking the victim multiple times.'
The suspect then fled the scene.
Van Dyk says family members were informed shortly after the shooting and rushed to the scene.
'They transported the injured man to hospital using the same vehicle he had been shot in,' he adds.
However, while en route, the vehicle was stopped by Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department officers, who discovered the victim in the back seat.
'When the officers inspected the vehicle, the victim had already succumbed to his injuries.'
Crime scene experts were called to the location to process the area and gather forensic evidence, which will aid detectives in tracking down the perpetrator.
'A case of murder has been opened, and we are actively following all available leads in an effort to trace and apprehend the suspect.'

Tshwane mayor vows to fix city's leasing system as illegal business closed during raid
Moya complained that business that were previously shut down by the City of Tshwane have reopened. While the City of Tshwane had its hands full with prolonged power outages and the switching on and off of its own reservoir, Mayor Nasiphi Moya was out on the streets this week with the Reclaim Our City campaign, which resulted in two arrests, illegal businesses being closed and notices issued. The two arrests were for illegal immigration and possession of stolen goods, while three vehicles were also impounded. Eviction notices served in Tshwane On Thursday night, Moya joined the bylaw enforcement operation in Sunnyside, with the Reclaim Our City campaign kicking off at the popular nightspot House 22. 'That club and many other businesses here have been served with eviction notices by the City of Tshwane. These businesses don't have valid permits and many are non-compliant. We were here a few months back and some of those we closed managed to reopen. We are closing them down again,' she said. Moya said the Sunnyside precinct is a strategic area that will be offered to the private sector for investment. 'All illegal businesses here will be evicted from this area. Another store we've closed. The people running this establishment supply food concoctions to predominantly Ethiopian nationals. There's no compliance with health regulations. They also don't have certification legalising the operation of a business. 'This man runs a spaza shop in Sunnyside. His visa states that he is an asylum seeker and, by law, he doesn't qualify to run a business in this city. He can only work and study in South Africa. But here he is overseeing a business operation. We've closed his store,' she added. This man runs a spaza shop in Sunnyside. His visa states that he is an asylum seeker and by law he doesn't qualify to run business in this City. 261 arrested in Tshwane crime crackdown
A total of 261 suspects have been arrested in a sweeping, high-impact crime-combating initiative led by police under the banner of Operation Shanela in the Tshwane District. The multidisciplinary operation, which focused on the Sinoville and Villieria policing precincts, was spearheaded by Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine in collaboration with various law enforcement partners. The co-ordinated effort, executed on June 19, forms part of ongoing SAPS strategies to curb crime and enhance visibility in known hotspots. With intensified patrols, compliance inspections, and suspect tracing, law enforcement officers targeted criminal elements plaguing the northern parts of Tshwane. Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the operation yielded significant results. He said of the 261 suspects arrested, 187 were apprehended through detective work. These arrests include seven suspects for murder, three for attempted murder, nine for armed robbery, 30 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and six for rape. Van Dyk said road safety and immigration compliance were also in focus. A major roadblock, executed with support from tactical teams, led to the detention of 63 undocumented foreign nationals. The individuals are currently undergoing processing for possible court appearances and deportation. 'As part of proactive enforcement, 682 individuals and 306 vehicles were searched during the operation, with ownership of 14 vehicles verified. Officers also conducted patrols across 35 high-crime areas and premises, resulting in multiple arrests. 'One suspect was arrested for possession and dealing in dagga. Police recovered a shopping bag full of dagga, two compressed dagga balls, and 28 small bags of dagga, along with an undisclosed amount of cash,' said Van Dyk. He said another individual was taken into custody for possession of suspected stolen property. The suspect was found in possession of three TV sets, seven cellphones, two tablets, and two watches. He failed to provide a plausible explanation for the goods. Traffic law enforcement also formed a critical pillar of the operation. Tshwane traffic officers issued 160 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R72 600. Seven minibus taxis were impounded for various violations of the Road Traffic Act, and five pedestrians were fined for creating dangerous circumstances on the roads. Six premises were inspected, and two were shut down for failing to comply with the Liquor Act. Police confiscated over 127 litres of alcohol during the crackdown. Major-General Thine expressed appreciation for the dedication and co-operation of all SAPS members and stakeholders who participated in the operation. 'The collective efforts of our law enforcement family continue to bring tangible results in our fight against crime,' he said. Elderly woman brutally murdered, found in bathtub in Pretoria-Moot
An 81-year-old woman was found brutally murdered in her Pretoria-Moot home on Tuesday, sparking a swift and intense police investigation. Pretoria Rekord reports that, within 12 hours, detectives arrested two suspects, one of whom was caught with the victim's belongings. According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, members of the Pretoria Moot SAPS responded to a call for police assistance at a local residence on Tuesday morning at around 10:00. 'Upon arrival, officers met with a security officer who had been contacted by a woman affiliated with a local NGO providing social support services. The woman explained that she regularly visited the 81-year-old female resident to assist with laundry and provide food support, as the elderly woman lived alone.' He says that on the morning in question, the NGO worker was surprised when her visit was answered by an unknown coloured female, who claimed the elderly resident was unwell and had taken medication to rest. 'Although unsettled, the NGO worker accepted the laundry handed to her and left. Her concern prompted her to contact the security officer, requesting a welfare check at the residence.' Van Dyk says police officers proceeded to the address. 'The front door was locked, and after failed attempts to gain entry, officers moved to the rear of the house, where they found the back door open. 'Inside, the home had been ransacked. Bloodstains were visible in the main bedroom, and in the bathroom, the body of an elderly white female was discovered in the bathtub, partially submerged in water with visible blood.' He adds that emergency medical services were summoned and, upon arrival, declared the woman deceased. 'Crime scene experts were immediately called to process the scene. 'Pretoria Moot detectives began their preliminary investigation and obtained a description of a possible suspect. Informers were activated to assist.' Van Dyk adds that later that evening, at around 21:30, informants notified detectives that a possible suspect matching the description had been seen in the area. 'Detectives swiftly responded and traced a woman accompanied by her boyfriend on a nearby street. Upon searching the pair, police recovered several items belonging to the deceased.' Both suspects were arrested on the scene and detained for murder. 'Further investigation led to the recovery of additional stolen items at locations where the suspects had allegedly sold them.' Major-General Samuel Thine praised the investigating team for their swift and committed response, ensuring that justice was served within 12 hours of the incident. Both suspects appeared in court today and were remanded and returned to custody. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
