Devine wins third Donegal International Rally in a row

BBC News5 hours ago

Callum Devine came through a demanding Donegal International Rally to win the event for a third year in a row. The 2023 Irish Tarmac Rally champion won the three-day event - one of the most famous rallies in Europe - alongside co-driver Noel O'Sullivan by 20.5 seconds ahead of Wales' Meirion Evans, while local driver David Kelly was third. Skoda driver Devine, 31, led after Friday's six stages but a gruelling Saturday saw a number of big names drop out of contention. European Rally Championship driver Jon Armstrong posted a number of fastest stage times and was challenging Devine on Saturday's first loop but a differential problem on his Ford Fiesta dropped him out of contention, and a second mechanical issue halted his recovery later in the day. Two time ERC champion Hayden Paddon, a late entry for the rally from New Zealand, was in the mix for victory but rolled out on Saturday's penultimate stage. The final stage on Saturday claimed British Rally Championship title challenger William Creighton, who slid off the road with a slow puncture and decided to retire his Toyota Yaris. The various issues for front runners took away from what could have been a titanic battle for the win in the Donegal hills as just 20 seconds separated Devine, Creighton, Evans and Paddon after 12 stages. However, as his rivals faltered, Devine, who himself battled handbrake issues, kept his cool to win the rally for the third consecutive year.Evans and co-driver Ger Conway were a comfortable second and, despite his issues, Armstrong and co-driver Shane Byrne had moved back into podium contention but the Fermanagh driver retired after an off on the final stage. That promoted Kelly and navigator Arthur Kierans onto the final step of the podium for the second year in a row.

Man United 'stepping up shock move for Everton flop but may face competition from Saudi clubs for £44.5m star' as Ruben Amorim targets new striker

Former Everton striker Moise Kean is reportedly on Manchester United 's radar. Kean enjoyed a resurgence at Fiorentina last season after a difficult spell at Goodison Park. The 25-year-old scored 19 goals and provided three assists in 32 Serie A appearances, helping the club secure a European place. According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, United are now monitoring Kean's situation with increasing interest. The Italian forward is understood to have a £44.5million release clause and is also attracting attention from Saudi side Al Qadsiah. It remains unclear whether Kean would be open to a move to the Middle East, although a lucrative offer could tempt him. United are in the market for a new striker, with Rasmus Hojlund having struggled to make an impact since his big-money move to Old Trafford. Sporting Lisbon's Victor Gyokeres, a target who previously worked with Ruben Amorim, is said to prefer a move to Arsenal, while Liam Delap has already opted to join Chelsea over United. Kean's first spell in the Premier League with Everton failed to live up to expectations. Signed as a highly-rated youngster, he struggled to adapt to life in England and was criticised for his attitude. His struggles were perhaps best summed up when then-interim manager Duncan Ferguson substituted him just 18 minutes after bringing him on during a match against United at Old Trafford. Kean managed only four goals in 39 appearances for the Toffees before a loan spell at Paris Saint-Germain and then a permanent move to Juventus.

Antonio Rudiger accuses Club World Cup opponent of racism as Real Madrid star is left fuming and referee activates new protocol

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger accused Pachuca player Gustavo Cabral of racially abusing him during Sunday's Group H clash at the FIFA Club World Cup. A visibly fuming Rudiger reacted to something Cabral said to him during an exchange of words in stoppage time of Madrid's 3-1 win by raising a complaint to Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti Abel. Abatti did not issue a card to Cabral as he had seemingly not heard anything untoward himself. However, moments later the referee was seen crossing his arms to make FIFA's 'No Racism Gesture', suggesting that the incident will be investigated further. Madrid manager Xabi Alonso then said in his post-match press conference: 'Racist insult against Rudiger? That's what Rudiger said, and we believe him. 'Now FIFA is investigating. It's unacceptable.'
