Signal-free Mall Road to improve traffic flow
The Punjab government has decided to construct two additional underpasses on Mall Road in Rawalpindi to make it signal-free and smooth traffic flow.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday visited the ongoing GPO Underpass and Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover projects on Mall Road to review progress and ensure smooth traffic flow in the city. She also interacted warmly with laborers, waving to them in appreciation.
During her unannounced inspection, the chief minister expressed satisfaction over the expected completion of the projects by October 31, and commended the engineers and workers involved in the development.
She directed that construction quality must be maintained without compromise and also ordered the plantation of trees on both sides of the roads.
On this occasion, PML-N MNA Tahira Aurangzeb, senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Chief Secretary Zahid Zaman Akhtar, and other officials were also present.
According to project officials, this initiative is part of the largest development project in Rawalpindi's history, being completed in a record timeframe.
The Punjab Secretary of Communications and Works briefed the provincial chief executive on the technical details, informing her that the underpass would significantly ease road crossing for patients traveling to AFIC and MH Hospitals, and facilitate the daily movement of over 200,000 vehicles. In total, 26 kilometers of Mall Road will be made signal-free.
Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover, starting at Khawaja Corporation, is being built at a cost of Rs2.3 billion, while the underpass project is estimated at Rs4.38b. So far, 85% of the flyover and 60% of the underpass construction has been completed. The overhead bridge piles are fully installed, 56 girders have been prepared, and 32 have already been installed on the flyover. Work on seven drainage systems is ongoing, and the flyover's boundary wall has been completed.
Additionally, 2,093 piles and girders for the underpass at GPO Chowk have been completed, and a dedicated pedestrian pathway is also included in the project.
Once completed, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover will provide direct access to the Motorway and Rawalpindi Ring Road, benefiting approximately 79,000 vehicles daily.
According to the officials concerned, 56 development projects are currently underway in the Rawalpindi Division.

For a long time, budgets were seen as mere formality — voluminous documents weighing 15 to 20 kilograms, often relegated to scrap piles. However, Maryam Nawaz has shattered this perception. In just her first year in office, Maryam Nawaz's government initiated nearly 100 public welfare projects — all funded through provincial resources, without relying on federal contributions. In healthcare, her government has introduced free medicines in public hospitals for the first time in Punjab. An impressive Rs 80 billion has been allocated solely for this purpose. Additionally, a Universal Health Insurance Programme is being launched with a budget of Rs 25 billion to ensure affordable and quality medical care for all citizens. The flagship project in health remains the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital in Lahore, which is rapidly progressing and expected to complete its first phase by 2025. Work is also under way on the Nawaz Sharif Cardiology Hospital in Sargodha, due to be completed by September this year. In the realm of youth engagement and sports, the budget includes new schemes worth Rs 7.6 billion to build modern sports complexes in various cities. This is part of a broader strategy to provide healthy outlets and keep young people away from divisive and confrontational politics. The 'Easy Business Programme' has disbursed Rs 70 billion in interest-free loans to youth and entrepreneurs, leading to the establishment of over 5,000 new businesses. Education remains a top priority. The development budget for education has more than doubled — seeing over a 200 percent increase. Not only has this sector received funding, but major initiatives have been rolled out in schools and colleges, including infrastructure improvements and better resources. Public hospitals are undergoing a successful revamping initiative. Many now match or even surpass private hospitals in quality, offering free diagnostics and medication — services previously unheard of in public facilities. Unfortunately, opposition parties often reduce their role to theatrics — tearing up budget documents and causing disruptions in the assembly, acts that serve no benefit to the common citizen. Constructive criticism and viable suggestions are essential for a functioning democracy. Disagreements are natural in politics, but personal attacks cross into hostility. Despite being numerically strong, the opposition remains fragmented and divided, inadvertently benefiting the ruling party. The government's focus, meanwhile, is steadfast on Punjab's 140 million residents. Development projects are being executed across the province — from Lahore to Attock and Rawalpindi to Sadiqabad — without discrimination. Maryam Nawaz's first year in office has addressed many injustices from the past. There is a visible shift in public perception — people are beginning to express satisfaction with the government's direction. A key factor in her success is the guidance and political wisdom of Nawaz Sharif, a seasoned and visionary leader. His focus on public welfare has clearly influenced her governance model. Maryam Nawaz's strength lies in her ability to initiate people-centric projects that deliver real benefits. Today, Punjab leads other provinces in development and prosperity, primarily because public funds are being spent on the public itself. When citizens experience relief, they naturally see their leaders as their true well-wishers. She has also played a vital role in strengthening the PML-N in Punjab. The recent by-election victory in Sambrial stands as a testament to that. Attempts to spread division and hatred in the province have been decisively countered through effective political strategy. People are increasingly rejecting politics of violence and destruction, recognizing its detrimental impact. Maryam Nawaz and her team are working diligently to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Punjab. Her cabinet includes two dynamic female ministers — Marriyum Aurangzeb and Azma Bukhari — who have made significant contributions. Maryam Nawaz frequently acknowledges and praises their efforts. Azma Bukhari, in particular, has proven herself a formidable spokesperson, not only promoting government initiatives but also effectively countering the opposition. With a cabinet full of young, educated, and dedicated professionals, Maryam Nawaz's government is working with commitment. The results of these efforts are becoming increasingly visible across the province, as Punjab strides confidently on the path of development and progress. Signal-free corridor takes shape in Pindi
Nawaz Sharif Flyover from Khawaja Corporation on Adiala Road, along with two underpasses on Mall Road and an underground pedestrian walkway, has entered its final phase of completion. These projects are expected to be inaugurated later this month. Additionally, the construction of a flyover and underpasses at the busy Kachehri Chowk, as well as underpasses at Qasim Market, Race Course, and Charing Cross, is expected to commence soon — likely during the ongoing summer vacation period of educational institutions, in order to expedite completion. Having been constructed at a cost of Rs2.3 billion, Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road is in its final stage. Although the project could not be inaugurated on June 3 as initially planned, it is now expected to be inaugurated by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on June 30. On the same day, she is also likely to inaugurate two underpasses on Mall Road — at Flashman Hotel Chowk and Mall Plaza Chowk — as well as the underground pedestrian walkway near AFIC. This project is expected to be completed by June 30 as well, with a total cost of Rs4.388b. Meanwhile, a decision has been made to construct additional underpasses at three of the busiest intersections on Mall Road and Peshawar Road: Qasim Market, Race Course Chowk, and Charing Cross. The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has been instructed to relocate underground utilities — electricity, gas, water supply, and sewerage — from these locations to facilitate construction. Moreover, a major project involving the remodelling and expansion of Kachehri Chowk has been approved. This project includes the construction of two flyovers and three underpasses, with an estimated cost of Rs8.5b. The Punjab government has already allocated funds for this project. Sources say following the completion of the two flyovers and three underpasses at Kachehri Chowk, and with the construction of five underpasses on Mall Road and Peshawar Road, this entire route will effectively become a signal-free corridor up to Motorway Chowk. It is worth noting that an underpass at Golra Mor has already been completed and is operational. The Punjab government is funding all these infrastructure projects, which are being executed by the provincial Communications and Works (C&W) Department. Schools get operational boost The Punjab Education Department has released an amount of Rs464.5 million for the operational expenses of all public schools in the Rawalpindi Division. An amount of Rs4.58715 billion has been released for the fourth and final quarter of the outgoing fiscal year to cover operational expenses and utility bills for all 43,000 public primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools across the province.
