SELANGAU (June 11): The state government aims to have the construction of SMK Selangau as well as a new road to Selangau bazaar to be completed earlier than scheduled, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said this was to speed up the delivery of facilities to the people and ensure the two projects are not only completed according to specifications but also ahead of schedule.
'We are very happy to see the progress of the projects which seems to be going well according to the original schedule. The road was originally scheduled for completion in 12 months.
'However, we have asked the contractor to complete it within six months as we see the good weather factor and that the work is not that difficult,' he told reporters after visiting the road project site here yesterday.
According to Uggah, who is Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, the road measuring about 450 metres and costing RM3.5 million will provide easy access to the bazaar as well as help stimulate the local economy.
On the SMK Selangau project, Uggah said the project, which is funded by the federal government, is also progressing well, moving at about five per cent ahead of schedule.
'This project involves the construction of 18 classrooms at a cost of RM81 million and is expected to be completed by June 2027. However, we also asked for the Public Works Department (JKR) and the contractor to work out the work plan to complete it by December 2026.
'The project is sited on a good location — it is not sited on peat soil or hilly area, and the construction is also using Industrialised Building System. We do not see any reason why they cannot do it any faster,' he said.
He said that JKR would monitor the progress of all projects extensively to ensure there are no delayed or sick projects.
Uggah also said the state government would not hesitate to terminate the contract of any project that fails to be completed according to schedule.
'All projects that have been approved by our Premier must be implemented according to schedule. That is his hope. The people also expect that when a project is announced, it will be built and completed as scheduled,' he said.

Vatican Bank reports RM159 million profit in 2024

The Vatican Bank, officially known as the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), reported a net profit of €32.8 million (RM158,952 million) for 2024, a seven per cent increase from the previous year. Jun 20, 2025 The Vatican Bank. (CNA/Andrea Gagliarducci VATICAN: The Vatican Bank, officially known as the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), reported a net profit of €32.8 million (RM158,952 million) for 2024, a seven per cent increase from the previous year. The growth was driven by higher interest, commission, and brokerage income, along with tighter cost control. The total volume of client assets rose to €5.7 billion (RM27 billion), and net assets increased to €731.9 million (RM3.5 billion). The IOR's strong performance also led to a dividend of €13.8 million (RM66 million) being allocated to the Holy Father, reaffirming its mission to support the Church's religious and charitable works. All investments were conducted in line with Catholic social teaching, with 100 per cent of asset management lines posting gains and 79 per cent outperforming their benchmarks. The bank's Tier 1 capital ratio — a key indicator of financial stability — reached 69.43 per cent, a 16.1 per cent rise from 2023, due to reduced risk exposure and stronger equity. This places the IOR among the most well-capitalised financial institutions globally in terms of liquidity and solvency. Improvements in technology and staffing in 2024 further enhanced the IOR's operations and customer service. As the only financial institution authorised to operate within Vatican City, its audited financials confirmed compliance with international accounting standards and another year of stable, sustained growth. --CNA

Chow: Let cops investigate, Penang not linked to MBI investment scam

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will leave it to the police to probe the investment scam by the now-defunct MBI International Group, that preyed mainly on Chinese nationals Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that enforcement efforts were talked about by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chinese President Xi Jinping during Xi's visit in April. Investigators are currently pursuing leads that monies raised by MBI allegedly helped finance purchases of state government land for large development projects, ventures that have been key to Penang's robust economic growth over the last decade. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said it was the responsibility of the police to investigate and charge. "Let the police investigate, and if there is a case, then prosecute. "On the state government's part, we will continue with our development projects and plans," he told the New Straits Times. Previously, Chow said the state government would leave it to Bukit Aman to investigate the money trail of the now-defunct MBI pyramid scheme. He said that his administration had nothing to do with the matter. Chow added that they had not been called in to assist in the investigation. Several Tan Sris and a Datuk Seri had been arrested to assist investigations into the matter since April. More than RM3.5 billion worth of assets — including a hotel, durian farms, luxury vehicles, watches, and bank accounts — had been seized and frozen. The MBI Group International was founded by Tedy Teow, a businessman dubbed "Jho Low 2."

Sarawak vows to link rural communities with roads by 2030

MIRI: The Sarawak government has pledged to connect all, or at least most, rural communities in the state to the road network by 2030, as part of an infrastructure push supported by nine regional development agencies. State Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said each agency has been allocated RM1.5 billion, stressing that the funds must be used efficiently and without delay. 'It becomes an issue if these allocations are not spent. Our Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expects the funds to be used promptly. 'When people are aware of these allocations, they expect action, improved roads, better access and better livelihoods. If not, they'll take to social media to express their frustration,' he said. Speaking at a Highland Development Agency (HDA) planning session here today, Uggah urged government departments to resolve project delays through on-the-ground coordination. HDA, one of the agencies driving the state's rural transformation agenda, has already committed RM1 billion to infrastructure and economic initiatives, with the remaining RM500 million expected to be utilised by mid-2026. He noted that much of Baram, in the Miri Division, still relies on former logging roads, many of which require urgent upgrades, maintenance or replacement of wooden bridges. 'The situation is complex. We must find a long-term solution for road maintenance,' he said, adding that he will lead a Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) team to Bario in July for an on-site assessment. Beyond connectivity, Uggah highlighted Bario's untapped economic potential in agriculture and tourism, particularly in coffee and passion fruit cultivation, buffalo farming and handicrafts. He also noted the potential for buffalo milk cheese production, referencing a pilot project at the Meragang breeding station in Limbang. 'There's a large population of wild buffaloes owned by locals. I suggest looking into domesticating them,' he said. Uggah also urged local communities and agencies to leverage the region's rich cultural heritage to develop sustainable tourism. Among those in attendance at the session were Baram MP Datuk Anyie Ngau, Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala, Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau and Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA) chief executive officer Datuk Ismawi Ismuni.
