Ahead of monsoon, Delhi PWD identifies 7 key waterlogged spots for stricter oversight

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, the Public Works Department (PWD) has identified seven 'perpetually' waterlogged spots within the city that require stricter oversight from senior engineering staff.
These spots include Minto Bridge, Pul Prahladpur Underpass, Ring Road opposite WHO, Jahangirpuri Metro Station Road, Under Zakhira Flyover, Loni Road Golchakkar and Karala Kanjhawla.
According to an official order dated April 28, seven critical locations will be directly monitored by the Engineer-in-Chief. Officers assigned to each location will be personally accountable for preventing waterlogging during the 2025 monsoon season. Any failure in timely action could invite disciplinary measures.
The move follows data provided by the Delhi Traffic Police, which identified 308 waterlogged points in 2023 alone, which reduced to 194 last year. However, based on new data from the Delhi Traffic Police, the number has risen to 445 in 2025, with 335 of those under the PWD's jurisdiction.
The remaining belong to other agencies. Assistant Engineers (AEs) and Junior Engineers (JEs) have been designated as site in-charges for each of the 335 PWD-managed points. They are tasked with overseeing drainage maintenance, equipment readiness, and on-site emergency response.
In a first, Project Engineers have also been appointed as 'Review Officers' for each point, with a mandate to supervise operations and submit regular reports. Pump operators will be deployed around the clock in three shifts, and temporary shelters will be arranged for them to ensure rapid response during rainfall.
As part of broader drainage upgrades, Delhi has been divided into 35 zones for desilting operations. So far, 50 kilometres of drains have been cleaned, with a target to desilt 1,400 kilometres by May 31.
The desilting effort is being coordinated among multiple civic agencies.

City's civic infra fails first rain test

1 2 Lucknow: Revealing serious lapses in civic infrastructure maintenance, the service lane of Ring Road near Indiranagar Sector 18 collapsed after the season's first rainfall, forming a 15-foot-wide crater. The public works department has barricaded the area. As a temporary measure, the crater has been filled with debris and rubbish to prevent any untoward incident. Repair work has begun, but the blame game among govt agencies has already started. PWD sources alleged that Lesa had recently laid underground cables without proper coordination, which might have weakened the surface. Meanwhile, confusion prevailed over jurisdiction. Zone-7 zonal officer Akash Kumar said the area falls under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). He added that sewer and drain maintenance is the responsibility of LMC. Residents reported that while the sludge from drains was removed during pre-monsoon cleaning, it was left on the roadside and washed back into the drains with the rain, defeating the purpose. Waterlogging was also reported near the Daliganj Crossing underpass, where a small crater developed following the downpour. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Walgreens Keeps Quiet About This '9 Pills for $7' Generic Cialis Deal Health Alliance by Friday Plans Learn More Undo On G-20 Road, the road caved in after heavy rainfall. For pedestrian safety, wooden planks have been installed around the cavity. At Vijayant Khand-3, houses faced severe waterlogging. The road in front of Neem Upvan Park was submerged, making it difficult for residents to step outside their homes. In Sushant Golf City, Resident Welfare Association president ML Sahu shared that even a short spell of rain leads to severe water accumulation. Residents of Paradise Crystal Apartments, A-4, and Santushti-2 Apartments continue to face hardships due to chronic drainage issues. Near the Ram Manohar Lohia Park crossing, a tree was uprooted, blocking the road and causing traffic snarls. Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar conducted an inspection of the Smart City Control Room to review the status of flood pumping stations and monitor complaints received during Thursday night's rainfall. He directed officials to ensure the timely resolution of all complaints and to follow up with citizens for feedback after the issue is addressed. Highlighting the vulnerability of low-lying areas, he said all municipal teams are on high alert to tackle waterlogging and other rain-related issues. Helpline nos. Delhi's waterlogging nightmare: 71 problematic sites still flooded despite drain work; flagged for urgent review

NEW DELHI: Public Works Department (PWD) has pinpointed 71 critical locations out of about 350 waterlogging-prone areas that continue to face problems despite initial cleaning. These sites will be reviewed with various departments during a coordination meeting on Friday, according to officials familiar with the matter. Representatives from PWD, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Metro, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, National Highway Authorities of India and the irrigation and industries departments will participate in the meeting to address the waterlogging concerns. Among the 71 locations are several points spanning Mathura Road, Ring Road and Outer Ring Road. These include Modi Mill flyover, Mukarba Chowk, Rajghat, IP flyover, Boulevard Road, Salimgarh Fort, Chatta Rail Chowk on SP Mukherjee Road, Majnu ka Tila, Siri Fort traffic signal, and Qutub Minar metro station. The main Burari Road remains one of the worst affected, with a major upgradation of the existing drain urgently required. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Discover Effortless Glucose Monitoring: Request a Free Trial Dexcom Try Now Undo In Ashok Vihar market, the situation persists despite letters written to DSIIDC seeking a permanent solution. Boulevard Road also faces regular water accumulation, with MCD yet to desilt a major drain in the area. On Vikas Marg, desilting and the laying of a new pipeline are currently underway in an attempt to resolve the issue, according to govt sources. At Tilak Marg under Tilak Bridge, the problem is attributed to the area's low-lying geography, making it naturally prone to water accumulation. A similar concern affects the stretch under Modi Mill flyover, where desilting work is in progress. The stretch from Moti Bagh to Durga Bai Deshmukh metro station witnesses waterlogging due to the connection of a sewer line of DUSIB in the stormwater drain. Drain-laying work is also on at the old Delhi Police headquarters-IP flyover stretch. Mangi Bridge on Ring Road is also affected, as desilting is being carried out and a pump is planned to be deployed. At Barapullah drain near Seva Nagar, the blockage caused by leaves and silt was recently addressed through desilting. In Greater Kailash 1, near B2 block, necessary arrangements for deploying a pump have been completed. Near the Satya Niketan bus stand, outfall line and sump work have been completed, but the installation of an electric motor is pending. Under Delhi Cantt metro station, the connection of a sewer line with the stormwater drain has caused waterlogging. The issue was formally communicated to the metro station staff. The 71 critical hotspots also include 13 areas along Ring Road, 11 along Rohtak and New Rohtak Road, nine areas along Outer Ring Road, and three along Mall Road Extension. Other stretches of concern include IP Road, BRT Road, Avtar Singh Marg, main Goyla Road, Bhairon Marg, Anuvrat Marg, Burari Marg and Najafgarh Road. A senior PWD official said that the meeting is being held to discuss and resolve the inter-departmental issues involved in taking remedial actions in respect of the 71 waterlogging points in Delhi. "In some areas, the problem was identified and some solutions were also implemented while in other areas, pumps have been deployed as of now," said the official. He added that the meeting will help solve the issue of multiplicity of agencies. PWD manages about 2,026 km of drains running along the 1,400 km of roads, which merge with big drains under the irrigation department that have outfall in the Yamuna river.

PWD completes only 60% desilting work

New Delhi: The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed only 60 per cent of the desilting work of drains un-der its jurisdiction, with the June 15 deadline now over, an official report said. Earlier this month, PWD Minister Parvesh Verma had set June 15 as the deadline to complete the de-silting of all PWD-managed drains ahead of the monsoon. The department has completed desilting for 1,294 km as of Tuesday, out of the total 2,140 km drain length under it, the latest status report said. Among the 17 PWD divisions, only the South West Region-2 (SWR-2) has completed 100 per cent de-silting, while the West Road-2 division has shown the poorest performance with only 31 per cent work completed. The deadline for completion of desilting work has now been extended to June 30, an official said. During an inspection of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department's control room on June 10, Verma had said the Delhi government had completed 90 per cent of desilting work for 76 drains under the (I&FC) and around 50 per cent of work on PWD drains
