Lourdes secures return to state over McCarthy; Heritage, Aquinas, Cypress Bay advance

Miami Herald13-02-2025

With the bitter memory of a rare regional final loss a year ago on the very same field, the Lourdes Academy girls soccer team was not about to let history repeat itself on Wednesday night.
The Bobcats, after suffering a 3-1 upset loss to St. Thomas Aquinas a year ago in the same round did not let it happen this time as they pulled out a 1-0 overtime win over Archbishop McCarthy in a Region 4-5A final at Columbus High School.
Lourdes (15-1-3) is now headed back to the place its become quite accustomed to - the state final four. The Bobcats, who went to seven of them in an eight-year span from 2016-2023, will enter as the No. 1 seed and take on No. 4 Wesley Chapel Cypress Creek in a 5A state semifinal on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
'Last year honestly was a shock for us but at the same time it was a reality check for us,' Lourdes coach David Fique said. 'As a program, we have now worked our way up to where you are expected to make it to state which is nice but it's a challenge to do it every year. The girls knew they were going to need to play well tonight to get this done because McCarthy is a tough opponent.. We're excited to be back at state.'
The game-winner for Lourdes came off the foot of freshman Gianna Gray four minutes into the first 10 minute overtime period and then the Bobcats put on a brilliant display of possession keep-away on the Mavericks, limiting them to virtually not offensive chances the rest of the way.
'Everything happened so fast, it's still a blur for me right now,' said Gray, who had just gotten the water cooler bath from her teammates. 'What a moment to get a goal like that. I love my teammates and am so glad I was able to help them tonight.'
Bobcat players suffered through a frustrating scoreless 80 minutes of regulation as they more or less dominated possession and scoring chances but simply could not get the ball past McCarthy freshman goalkeeper Mikaela Bishop who was brilliant in front of the net making numerous quality saves.
'We're not even playing in overtime if it wasn't for Mikaela,' said McCarthy coach Mike Sica bluntly. 'She was simply outstanding out on that field and kept us in the game.'
Now the Bobcats will not head north hoping to capture another state title. Despite all the trips to state, winning it all has eluded them since 2020 when they won their second championship in a three-year span having also won it in 2018.
'We remembered what an empty feeling it was on this same field last year and have been determined all season long to right that wrong,' senior co-captain Mia Roca said. 'It took a lot out of us but we knew that we could do it because of how much of our team is not just a team but it's a family and I really felt that's what got us through tonight. Now it's time to go up there and bring the trophy home.'
HERITAGE CHASING MULTIPLE TITLES
American Heritage's quest for both its third consecutive state title and a national title rolled on with another lopsided win on Wednesday night.
Led by a pair of goals and an assist from Sami Villaverde, the Patriots (17-1) cruised past Somerset Academy 4-0 on their home field in the Region 4-4A final.
American Heritage advances to state for the third consecutive year and will take on Lemon Bay on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a Class 4A state semifinal at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
Senior Jordyn Norwood and freshman Mattie Hall also scored goals for Heritage, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps.
Senior Courtney Caruso, freshman Mia Sommers and junior Allison Aleman each had an assist as well. Senior Jillian Miliffe recorded the shutout.
Somerset Academy finishes 16-6.
AQUINAS RETURNS TO STATE
St. Thomas Aquinas is also ranked among the nation's best and continues to demonstrate why as it did during a 6-0 rout of Cooper City on its home field on Wednesday night in the Region 4-6A final.
The Raiders (18-1-3), who are ranked No. 6 nationally by MaxPreps, advanced to the Class 6A semifinals to take on Bradenton Lakewood Ranch at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
Aquinas owns the most state championships in state history with 15, but has not added to that total since 2017. The Raiders advanced to the state final four for the second consecutive season.
Bianca Raskin led Aquinas with two first-half goals while Marisa Robinson and Brooklyn Burbridge each scored also in the first 40 minutes.
Sophie Barnes and Madison McKeon each scored in the second half. Cooper City finishes the season 16-4-1.
CYPRESS BAY AVENGES LOSS
A year after having its streak of five consecutive trips to the state final four snapped by Douglas in the regional finals, Cypress Bay secured some payback with a 2-1 victory over the Eagles in Weston.
The Lightning (17-1-1), ranked No. 8 nationally by MaxPreps, advanced to the Class 7A state semifinals as the top seed, and they will take on Jupiter on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale. Douglas finishes the season 12-2-6.

McCarthy will be taking over as the team's starting quarterback and will be looking to keep the team at the top of the NFC. Last season under veteran quarterback Sam Darnold, the Vikings went 14-3 in the regular season. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in their Wild Card playoff matchup with the Los Angeles Rams. McCarthy has the talent and potential to be the team's long-term franchise quarterback. However, there are still concerns about his readiness to play after missing his entire rookie season due to a knee injury. J.J. Read more: Vikings Might Still Be in Play for Major QB Move ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky is very high on the young Minnesota signal caller entering the season. He's expecting big things from McCarthy in 2025. "I think he's going to be awesome this year," Orlovsky said. "Minnesota is the easiest place in the NFL this year. It's as good of a roster as there is in the NFL, and if you combine it with scheme and play caller, Kevin O'Connell, a lot of guys would go to Minnesota and play good football." While McCarthy will still need to prove himself on the field, there are a lot of media members who believe he's going to get off to a good start. There are very few quarterbacks who are given a better opportunity than McCarthy is being given. He has an elite offense to work with. Jordan Addison will be the No. 2 weapon for the Vikings, while T.J. Hockenson has the ability to be another key target. Having Aaron Jones in the backfield will also be helpful for Minnesota. Jones can make plays both on the ground and as a receiver out of the backfield. McCarthy will have a lot of pressure taken off of his shoulders due to the presence of Jones. All of that being said, the season cannot get here soon enough. There are questions surrounding McCarthy, but Orlovsky seems to think he'll answer them and pass the test with flying colors. Boston Celtics jersey history No. 21 - Johnny McCarthy (1963-64)

The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- the league that would become today's NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover. And for today's article, we will continue with the eighth of nine people to wear the No. 21, Boston guard alum Johnny McCarthy. After ending his college career at Canisius, McCarthy was picked up with the 25th overall selection of the 1956 NBA draft by the (then) Rochester Royals (now, Sacramento Kings). The Buffalo, New York native also played for the (then) St. Louis (now, Atlanta) Hawks and in another domestic league before signing with Boston in 1963 for his final season in the league, picking up a title in a reserve role as well. During his time suiting up for the Celtics, McCarthy wore only jersey No. 21 and put up 1.3 points and as many rebounds per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.

Vikings Might Still Be in Play for Major QB Move

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings will have a new era beginning under second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. After taking McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, it was obvious that he would be the quarterback of the future. It's a bit surprising that the future is coming now after the young signal caller missed all of his rookie season due to a knee injury, but the team is clearly comfortable with him. There are a lot of questions surrounding McCarthy this season, but he will have every opportunity to answer them. Photo byEarlier in the offseason, the Vikings opted to pass on options like Aaron Rodgers in favor of McCarthy. However, there has been continued buzz about the team potentially pursuing a backup upgrade over Sam Howell, who they traded for during the draft. Read more: Vikings QB JJ McCarthy Called Out in Brutally Honest Breakdown With that being said, Kirk Cousins is still floating around as a potential target for Minnesota. Max Dible of Heavy Sports believes that Cousins is the best possible candidate to be McCarthy's backup. He explained why in a recent column. "Cousins will turn 37 years old in August and isn't a longterm threat to McCarthy's job security, though he would likely serve as a far more reliable insurance policy to the 22-year-old starter than Howell ever could," Dible wrote. "All of that renders Cousins as the best possible candidate — of those currently on the market — to serve as QB2 behind McCarthy, which led to multiple ESPN reporters authoring trade pitches reuniting Cousins with the Vikings earlier this month." Of course, Cousins is very familiar with the Vikings' system. He played for the team from the 2018 season through the 2023 campaign. Last season, the 36-year-old quarterback played the majority of the year as the Atlanta Falcons' starting quarterback. By the end of the season, however, he had been replaced by rookie signal caller Michael Penix Jr. Read more: Lions Urged to Make Aggressive Move for 4-Time Pro Bowl Defender He played in 14 games with the Falcons, completing 66.9 percent of his pass attempts for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. While the turnover numbers are concerning, Cousins would not be acquired to be the starter in Minnesota. That role would still belong to McCarthy. Instead, Cousins would be brought in to be a quality backup in case he's needed and he would also be able to serve as a veteran mentor to McCarthy. Both of those roles would be equally as valuable for the Vikings and it's an option worth considering. For more Minnesota Vikings and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
