Vapi cracks down on illegal scrapyards after fire triggers probe
Surat: The Vapi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has launched a drive against unauthorised scrap warehouses operating within its limits. An estimate revealed that over 500 such scrapyards exist.

Of these, around 50 have been demolished by authorities recently, while at least 50 have shut down after receiving instructions.
Action against over 300 more scrapyards is underway. Police have filed FIRs against eight people under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including for public nuisance, creating noxious conditions, obstructing public ways, negligent handling of fire, and endangering lives using machinery.
The Environment (Protection) Act was also invoked, as the accused ran scrapyards without required permits.
The complaint was filed by assistant sub inspector Ankur Godhani at Dungra police station.
The crackdown began after a major fire broke out at six scrapyards in Vapi's Karvad area. A preliminary probe by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, VMC, and the district collector's office revealed the scrapyards operated without approvals.
"There are many illegal scrapyards in VMC limits. Around 50 have already shut down and we have demolished at least 50," said VMC commissioner Yogesh Chaudhary.
Investigations revealed that these yards collected combustible waste such as plastic, paper, and chemical residues, often ignoring fire and pollution norms. They also handled chemical containers on-site and discharged untreated wastewater into natural sources, raising serious environmental concerns.

It emphasised the need to shift to safer and technologically advanced cleaning mechanisms and underscored that no violation of the child labour law would be tolerated. Minors were also reported to be working along the banks to clear vegetation in what appears to be a violation of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986. In its order dated June 19, the bench instructed CMC to prepare and submit a comprehensive action plan by July 31. The plan must outline strategies to streamline drain cleaning operations, prevent waterlogging, deploy suitable machinery and ensure proper training of workers. The matter will be taken up for further consideration on July 31.

Dealer booked for failing to transfer ownership of auctioned government bikes in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: In what investigators describe as a strange case, Avalahally police have registered a criminal case against a two-wheeler dealer who allegedly failed to transfer ownership and update registration numbers after purchasing govt vehicles in an e-auction conducted by the state police' wireless department. He is facing charges under section 314 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (dishonest misappropriation of property), along with relevant sections of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act. According to a complaint filed by Sheetal Shirahatti, an officer of the SP Wireless Office on MG Road, Shabbir participated in an e-auction held on May 18, 2023, where he successfully bid for eight two-wheelers. However, after acquiring the vehicles, he allegedly failed to complete the mandatory ownership transfer at the RTO or change the registration numbers. The issue surfaced recently during a routine audit of auctioned vehicle records. Upon checking with the RTO, officials discovered that the ownership details of the sold bikes had not been updated, despite the dealer having taken possession of them. In a troubling revelation, Shirahatti said the bikes continued to bear govt registration numbers, marked under the "G" series. This raised serious concerns over the possible misuse of the vehicles that were supposed to be either scrapped or sold with proper documentation. A senior investigator said: "We cross-checked the vehicle registration details on the Vahan Parivahan portal. Curiously, some entries show that ownership has been updated online, even though there is no corresponding update at the RTO. We are trying to understand how this discrepancy occurred." "To get to the bottom of this, we have filed a formal complaint." We've requested additional documents and will match them with RTO records. Once verified, we will summon the dealer for questioning," he added. "This is a very strange case and the first of its kind we've encountered. We are proceeding cautiously and thoroughly before initiating any further action," the officer added, noting that Shabbir is yet to be contacted for his statement. ‘Not fit for aircraft, go stitch slippers': IndiGo staffer alleges casteist abuse in office
Gurgaon: An FIR was registered against three officials of IndiGo Airlines after a colleague accused them of subjecting him to caste-based harassment and humiliation at the company's corporate office in the city. IndiGo Airlines did not respond to requests for comment on the FIR. The complainant, a 35-year-old trainee pilot from Bengaluru, accused his seniors Tapas Dey, Manish Sahani, and Captain Rahul Patil of verbal abuse and discriminatory behaviour during a meeting on April 28 at Emaar Capital Tower 2 — where the airline is headquartered. The victim alleged that the harassment began immediately after he arrived in office when Dey demanded he leave his phone and bag outside in a "demeaning manner". "His instruction set the tone for the abuse that followed," he said in his complaint. The trainee pilot claimed that the three officials made casteist remarks during the 30-minute meeting from 3.30pm, which included statements like "you are not fit to fly an aircraft, go back and stitch slippers" and "you don't even have the worth to be a watchman here". He alleged that the harassment continued for days and was designed to pressure him into resigning. "The statements they made were not only humiliating but clearly aimed at degrading my identity and status as a Scheduled Caste person," the complaint read. The harassment allegedly extended beyond verbal abuse. It included "professional victimisation" through unjustified salary deductions, forced retraining sessions, revocation of travel privileges, and unwarranted warning letters. The FIR at DLF-1 police station was lodged under sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the SC/ST Act, which deal with intentional insults or intimidation meant to humiliate a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe member in public view. The case also included sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 3(5) (common intention) of BNS. "We have begun collecting evidence and will soon record the statements of all parties involved," assistant sub-inspector Dalwinder Singh said.
