S'wak sovereign wealth fund given green light for global investments, says Abang Jo
KUCHING: The Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund has secured approval from the relevant authorities to proceed with global investments, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
The Sarawak Premier said this marked a crucial step in portfolio diversification for the fund, which was set up last year.
"It opens the door to international opportunities that will help maximise long-term returns for Sarawak and her people," he said in his winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Wednesday (May 28).

Abang Johari said the selection of external fund managers was currently in progress.
He said the first group, who would focus on fixed income investments, was now in the final stage of appointment, with more asset classes to be managed in the coming phases.
"Our focus remains on capital preservation while laying the groundwork for sustainable, long-term growth, ensuring the fund becomes a lasting resource for future generations of Sarawakians," he added.
Abang Johari also spoke on the new Kuching International Airport, saying it would be planned to accommodate 15 million passengers annually and be equipped with cutting-edge systems to ensure a seamless passenger experience from check-in to boarding.

Additionally, the airport will serve as an integrated aviation hub, with all terminals and support buildings interconnected.
"This cohesive layout will enhance operational efficiency and foster stronger synergies across the entire aviation industry ecosystem," he said.
Abang Johari gave his assurance that the development of the new airport and deep-sea port in Kuching would not be funded solely by the state government but would involve private sector investments.
He said local multinational and international corporations had expressed interest in spearheading the projects.

Abang Johari delivers his speech at the event. – Bernama photo KUCHING (June 23): Sarawak is primed to take centre stage in the development of the Asean Power Grid, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The Premier expressed strong confidence in the state's capability to support the ambitious regional energy integration project. He highlighted the positive reception from delegates at the recent 43rd Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME), hosted here recently, adding they were able to witness the state's role in building Asean. He said Malaysia's current chairmanship of Asean provides a strategic opportunity to bolster the nation's contributions, especially through Sarawak, towards establishing the Asean Power Grid. 'I've had a brief discussion with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and I hope that one of the strategies that we adopt will realise the vision to have the Asean Power Grid, which will drive economic advancement for Asean—particularly through Malaysia's contribution. 'With the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), we are optimistic that this energy project can be implemented successfully, God willing,' he said at the 2025 state-level Gawai Dayak Dinner last night. He also congratulated Anwar and the federal Cabinet for propelling Malaysia's stature while chairing Asean this year, earning recognition from Asean member states as well as external partners. He said Malaysia's leadership at the regional level has earned recognition from Asean member states as well as external partners who appreciate Malaysia's approach as a multiracial and multi-religious nation living in harmony. 'We have seen several recognitions given by our Asean partners who observe how we develop our country with people of different races and religions living under one roof as one big family. 'In this regard, we in Sarawak certainly give our full support towards positioning Malaysia as a nation respected by the world today,' he said. He was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here tonight. With the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Abang Johari said the state government is committed to realising the Asean Grid project, which has great potential and would enable Sarawak to play a strategic role as a major energy hub in the region. 'I had a brief discussion with the Prime Minister earlier, and I hope that one of the strategies we adopt will help realise your vision for the Asean Grid, which will provide an economic development boost to ASEAN, particularly through Malaysia's contribution,' he said. The Premier also said the presence of Anwar and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the cultural event reflected the strong relationship between the Federal Government and Sarawak. 'In fact, I was informed that the Prime Minister had another engagement scheduled for tonight. But he said, 'No, I want to go to Sarawak'… This reflects the close bond of brotherhood,' he added. Themed 'Peji Kenep Panau Pegep', which means 'United We Progress' in the Kayan ethnic language, the event featured traditional performances by the Orang Ulu, Bidayuh and Iban communities. The celebration was graced by the presence of Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. Also in attendance, among others, were Dewan Negara President Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Bin Awang Ali Basah, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and Gawai Dayak celebration main organising committee chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. – Bernama Abang Johari Tun Openg anwar ibrahim asean Asean grid

Pontianak-Kuching direct flights may resume soon, says Abdul Karim
(From left) Sherrina, Abdul Karim, Ting and Sharzede in a press conference at the festival. – Photo by Roystein Emmor SANTUBONG (June 21): Direct flights between Pontianak and Kuching may soon resume, following the Indonesian government's decision to reopen its airspace for the route. Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, confirmed the development during a press conference today, saying Indonesia has now agreed to open up its skies for the Pontianak-Kuching sector. 'I'm very happy. It has been announced on that side that they are opening up their skies from Pontianak. 'You see, Indonesia, they have got their own way. The decree must come from the President. I'm not putting the blame on the previous President because we've been asking and asking, please start again the Pontianak-Kuching flight. But it was not given. 'And recently, I was made to understand that they are opening up their skies. So, it's up to the airlines to start operating again. So, probably there are a few that might be looking into it now because I know that sector is a very good sector. It does not benefit Sarawak only. It does not benefit Malaysia only. It also benefits the other side,' he said. Abdul Karim noted that reinstating the route would offer a major convenience for Sarawakians. 'A lot of Sarawakians now, instead of driving four, five hours to Pontianak, they might as well just fly half an hour. And that will definitely benefit the industry, the tourism industry in Pontianak,' he said. When asked whether the Sarawak government would encourage low-cost carriers like AirAsia to take up the route, Abdul Karim confirmed that discussions are ongoing. 'Of course, we will be. Not just AirAsia. Even airlines from Indonesia. Indonesia has got lots of budget airlines. If they are willing to participate in that, of course, we are very, very happy,' he said. He also highlighted growing demand along the Sarawak–Indonesia air corridor. 'You can see now that the flight from Kuching to Jakarta used to be once a day. Now, it's already twice a day. And the loading is very high. Either way. So, there's big potential there,' he said. Also present were State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting; the ministry's permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Husaini; and Sarawak Tourism Board CEO Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor.
