Ben's breakdown: Cousins says Eagles' rebuild is on track

Perth Now3 days ago

West Coast champion Ben Cousins believes the club's rebuild is on track and says it is unfair to suggest the club has failed midway through Andrew McQualter's first season as coach.
And the Brownlow medallist has called for patience from Eagles fans, who he praised for showing up in large numbers to watch the struggling side.
The Eagles have won one of their games 14 games in McQualter's first season at the helm and sit two wins below Richmond at the bottom of the ladder.
But Cousins said it is unfair to judge the team off wins and losses.
'I think that's unfair. We all knew at the start of this year how far back West Coast were coming and I don't think you can measure their season in wins and losses at the moment,' he told 7NEWS during a comprehensive breakdown of the Eagles' season.
'There has definitely been periods where they have shown incremental improvement and I think they are probably where they thought they'd be.
'I love the way the West Coast supporters keep turning up. They do need to be patient and the administration at West Coast have got some really important decisions to make in the coming season or seasons, and it's just so important that they get them right.' He also warned against underestimating the time it takes for a coach to truly put his stamp on a group.
'Don't underestimate the time it takes to implement a game plan initially,' Cousins said.
'I think it's only fair that Mini McQualter gets a clean canvas when he steps in and I think to assess, or try and measure how far down the track in terms of the rebuild, I think would be unfair until we are 18 months, two years down the track.'
If Allen leaves the club as a free agent at the end of this season, the Eagles are likely to receive band one compensation. That would give them an extra pick at the draft directly after their first selection, which would likely be pick two.
Cousins said this year's draft would be a pivotal moment in the club's rebuild, but also said it would take time for those players to develop.
'They need to get them right. They have shown in the past that they can draft and develop players very quickly, but particularly now they are in this precarious situation, it's just so important that they make the most of the opportunities that they've got,' he said.
'They are going to get some high draft picks, but with that comes the real important part, which is to bring them on and develop them. That does take time.
'I think it is unrealistic to not expect this to take time to implement and I think they need to, in the coming draft or drafts, still continue to add some real promising youngsters that they can bring through or fast-track to make them better.

There are fears co-captain and key forward Oscar Allen has played his final game for the club and they have already lost Jake Waterman for the season, while Elliot Yeo has not played a game this year and Jeremy McGovern's future hangs in the balance while h faces the league's independent medical panel over the latest in a string of concussions.
'It's not just the number of injuries, but it's been to key personnel,' Cousins said.
'Waterman, their best forward, McGovern, their best back and Yeo, their best mid. It really has left them short.'
Cousins listed defender-cum-midfielder Brady Hough as one of his big improvers this season, as well as Reuben Ginbey — who has grown into a key defensive post. Brady Hough of the Eagles celebrates a goal. Credit: Paul Kane / Getty Images
'In and amongst what has been a really tough start to the year I have loved (Brady) Hough's versatility, I think Ginbey down back has been very good and now we are getting some games into Hewett, he is starting to show some real promise as well.
'And the two recruits in (Liam) Baker and (Jack) Graham have led the way.
'(Tyrell Dewar) had a breakout game a couple of weeks ago which I loved and don't forget Tom McCarthy, the mid-season draft pick who has already made his debut and I am excited about his prospects going forward.

‘Love ya mate': McGovern's heartfelt tribute to big brother

Mitch McGovern has made a heartfelt tribute to his brother Jeremy after the West Coast star was forced to medically retire from the AFL. The Carlton utility poked fun at himself as he took to social media to celebrate Jeremy's career, which came to an end on Friday as the 33-year-old formally announced he was hanging up the boots after 197 games. 'Proud is an understatement for how I feel about what you've done with your footy journey,' the post read. 'You taught me almost everything I know about footy (sorry dad). 'I'm incredibly honoured to have been able to ride the highs and lows in what the game have given you, and you can walk away with a smile and your head held high. 'Thanks for the combined 5x All-Aus, 1x Premiership and 1x BnF. Love ya mate.' One of the photos Mitch McGovern posted in his social media tribute. It also featured pictures of the brothers playing against each-other, during the 30-year-old's time at Adelaide, as well as photos from their childhood. Former West Coast captain and 2018 Norm Smith Medallist Luke Shuey also paid tribute to the champion defender, saying 'we were all privileged to be a teammate of Jeremy McGovern.' 'We didn't appreciate it enough throughout the journey but he was the type of player and clubman not everyone gets to play with,' Shuey said. 'He gave as much as he had in the tank, every time... he cared more than anyone... he made footy fun, in the hardest of times. 'He had every single person's back who was in his corner and he did it all with the worst rig and most disgusting pre-season testing results you'll every see. 'One of the greatest to ever do it, how lucky were we?!!' The reigning Eagles club champion was recommended to retire by the AFL's concussion panel after the latest in a series of head knocks he sustained in the Eagles' round eight loss to Melbourne. He said he was 'at peace' with the decision.

Concussion grounds Eagles high-flyer, permanently; Bont about to get ball rolling on Dogs contract

'As much as this isn't the way I would have liked to go out – I respect the decision. I'm gutted I don't get to pull the jumper on and run out one more time, but sometimes this is the way the game goes, and I am forever grateful to the West Coast supporters who have also shown me love and respect. 'I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with my career over the journey. 'I've always loved the game and winning a premiership is every kid's dream, but the lifelong friendships and relationships you build through footy mean more to me than anything. I will forever be indebted to West Coast and I will always bleed blue and gold.' McGovern, whose intercept mark launched the passage of play that led to teammate Dom Sheed's match-winning goal in the 2018 grand final, played his 197th and final match against Melbourne early last month. The 33-year-old was subbed out in the second quarter that day after sustaining a concussion when Demon Jake Melksham nudged him forward in an aerial contest, resulting in his head crashing into Harry Petty's back. Loading Match review officer Michael Christian cleared Melksham of any wrongdoing, but the Eagles confirmed barely a fortnight later that McGovern would consult the league's concussion experts because of ongoing symptoms. McGovern will go down as one of the best key defenders in his era after West Coast selected the Claremont product with the No.44 pick in the 2010 rookie draft. He signed a one-year deal in February to continue playing into next season after winning his first club best-and-fairest award in 2024. McGovern's 77 intercept marks in the Eagles' 2018 premiership season remains the most ever recorded in a single year. West Coast football boss Gavin Bell paid tribute to McGovern's rags-to-riches rise. 'To see 'Gov' come from WAFL reserves when he was drafted through to what he has achieved as a premiership player and five-time All-Australian, it's just a wonderful example to our current players,' Bell said. 'It didn't start off easily for him, and he had to get to work, focus on his strengths and develop his game. Even to overcome the injury setbacks he has battled in recent years, to bounce back and become our club champion for the first time last year showed his commitment to getting the best out of himself.' Bont to get contract 'rolling' Andrew Wu Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli is expecting contract talks with the club to play out smoothly, in a strong indication the superstar midfielder will not be going anywhere. Dogs fans cannot yet breathe a sigh of relief, but there is little chance of Bontempelli departing Whitten Oval any time soon. Discussions have begun between Bontempelli, 29, and the Bulldogs on a new deal that will likely see one of the greatest players to pull on the red, white and blue become just the eighth player in the club's 100-year history to play 300 games. 'It's going well, obviously it's getting to the point now where things will start to open up, those conversations will happen,' Bontempelli, who missed the first six games of the season due to injury and proposed to his partner last November, said on Friday. 'There was a lot going on in my life early on in the season and hence why I, no different to other years, took my time a little bit with it. Loading 'Those conversations will definitely start to take place, pretty much as of next week. So the ball will well and truly get rolling with that. I see it going quite smoothly.' Despite speculation that Collingwood are interested in a blockbuster trade to move him across Melbourne, Bontempelli said no such offer had been relayed to him through his manager Tom Petroro. 'That information never really came to me at all, to be honest,' Bontempelli said. The Bulldogs captain was speaking at the unveiling of touch and track technology that allows blind and low-vision fans to follow the game live at a venue. Launched by the AFL and Telstra with technology company Field of Vision and Champion Data, the hand-held device includes a magnetic ring which moves across a tactile map of the field, mirroring the ball's movement in real time. The device uses distinct vibrations to mark goals and behinds, and developers are working on how other key plays, such as turnovers, can be recognised. Previously, fans such as Bulldogs supporter Shaun Keath, have relied on radio commentary and the kindness of friends and family to inform them of the on-field action. Loading 'I'm always nagging my wife, 'where's the ball, where's the ball?' So it's going to be great to actually be able to enjoy it a lot more than I am,' Keath said. 'I've only even been able to listen to it and been quite antisocial because I've got to have my headphones in, and I rely on the crowd and what they do as well.'
