Khushwant Singh litfest makes Oxford debut with message of peace across borders
The Khushwant Singh Literary Festival (KSLF), now in its seventh London edition, made a stirring debut in Oxford with a strong message of building bridges in times of global unrest.
Bringing alive many of Khushwant Singh's enduring passions — heritage and ecological preservation, cross-border ties between India and Pakistan, and the shared poetic legacy of South Asia — the Oxford edition was hosted in collaboration with the University of Oxford and the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development, among other partners. This year's theme, 'Humanity Across Borders,' framed the entire discourse as a tribute to the prolific and iconoclastic author's values.
The opening session featured novelist and literary agent Keshava Guha, who discussed his second book, The Tiger's Share, with Somerville College alumna and novelist Francesca Kay. The novel delves into the complexities of contemporary Delhi society, unspooling themes of ecological crisis and familial tensions.
Another highlight was the discussion between science writer Matt Ridley and infectious disease epidemiologist Dr Sunetra Gupta on Ridley's latest book, Birds, Sex and Beauty. The two examined recent developments in evolutionary theory with wit and depth, before turning to a contentious debate on the origins of the Covid-19 virus. Ridley, grandson of British architect Edwin Lutyens, spoke of his family's links with Khushwant Singh's father, Sir Sobha Singh, while defending the lab-leak theory—a position Gupta firmly challenged.
The Oxford edition also deepened the bond between India and Somerville College, whose historic connection includes early Indian women scholars like Princesses Catherine and Bamba Duleep Singh —daughters of Maharaja Duleep Singh and pioneers in the suffragette movement — as well as Indira Gandhi, who studied at Somerville before becoming India's first woman prime minister.

Why did Taare Zameen Par's Darsheel Safary say Aamir Khan 'is not my brother' amid Sitaare Zameen Par success?
Taare Zameen Par, released in 2007, remains one of Aamir Khan's most cherished films to date. Along with Aamir, the movie featured Darsheel Safary in the main role, who played Ishaan. After this film's success, Darsheel went on to work on a few projects following the COVID-19 pandemic. He recently revealed that all projects he has done so far have been through 'zero contacts' and he hasn't asked for work from Aamir Khan. Stating his thoughts, Darsheel expressed how Khan is not his 'brother' and he feels shy. Darsheel Safary reveals why he doesn't ask for work from Aamir Khan In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Taare Zameen Par actor Darsheel Safary revealed how he is in touch with Aamir Khan by only sending him good wishes and avoiding asking for work. The actor emphasised how he opts for auditions and screen tests to get projects instead of asking Khan to help him. Darsheel Safary said, "Whatever work I've done after the pandemic has been through zero contacts. Auditions and screen tests allow me to understand whether I'm able to do [a role] and also help producers and directors understand if I fit it." The 28-year-old actor disclosed that people get upset because he doesn't ask for work from Aamir Khan. Darsheel shared how he feels too shy to do this and said, "He (Aamir Khan) is not my brother, so I can call him and say, 'Please get me a script.' My chosen path has been to [only] send him best wishes, like a text on his birthday. It's just how I preferred it." Darsheel Safary shares thoughts on Sitaare Zameen Par On June 20, the sequel of Sitaare Zameen Par was released in theatres, featuring Aamir Khan and Genelia D'Souza in pivotal roles. Along with them, 10 new faces also debuted with this movie. At the grand premiere night on June 19, Darsheel Safary was spotted at the event. The actor also shared his views on the sequel and went on to praise the movie. He shared how the film holds up a mirror with humor, grace, and heart. Reflecting on Sitaare Zameen Par not releasing on OTT, Darsheel said, "Some stories ask for silence, a screen, and your full heart. You'll walk in curious and walk out a little more human." Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par is produced by Aamir alongside Aparna Purohit and Ravi Bhagchandka.

Season 3 also marked the much-anticipated return of Navjot Singh Sidhu , joining Archana Puran Singh on the judge's panel. He continued to tease Sidhu and joked, 'Paaji, you are back on the show after so many years, bhale hi gathbandhan ki sarkar bani ho (even though it is a united alliance). How are you feeling? Netflix is spending big, but how do you feel?' In response, Sidhu shared a shayari, saying that Dehradun could never come between the charm of two people from Amritsar. Kapil continued the banter by joking that Archana had been anxious ever since she heard about Sidhu's return and even consulted astrologers about it. He says, "Jyotish ko jaake kehti hai, Rahu aur ketu ko toh main sambhal lungi ye Sidhu ka koi upay batao..(I can handle Rahu and Ketu, but what do I do with Sidhu?). The popular comedian shared his excitement over Navjot Singh Sidhu's return to the show but couldn't resist cracking a joke, saying they had to take a six-month-long break because of him. Sidhu, quick with his wit, replied with a laugh, 'Be glad it was just six months—imagine what you'd do if it lasted nine!' Kapil seized the moment and fired back with another playful dig at Sidhu, saying, "Main toh phir break mein mere bacche hue, jab corona hua, aap toh chalte matchon mein kar gaye, dekho aap." (For the record, I had my kids during COVID, when the world was on a break. You had yours while the cricket matches were still going on).
