Reinventing life after K-pop trainee days

Dropped from cutthroat race at young age, former idol wannabes redefine failure in their own ways
Beneath the glitz and glamour of K-pop, countless trainees, many still in their teens, spend years perfecting their vocals and choreography, clinging to the hope of one day stepping into the spotlight.
A 2022 survey by the Korea Creative Content Agency put their numbers at 1,170. But this figure leaves out K-pop star wannabes outside entertainment agencies -- those training at independent dance studios or trying their luck on platforms like YouTube.
For many, the pursuit consumes their entire adolescence. But what happens to those who don't make it? What becomes of the lives shaped around a dream that never came true? We interviewed three former K-pop trainees to find out.
'The things that didn't work out helped shape who I am today'
Park Hae-wan, a 31-year-old merchandiser at a food company in Gyeonggi Province, came close to making it. He was part of a 'debut team' consisting only of debut-ready trainees at one of Korea's top three entertainment agencies.
During his trainee years from ages 14 through 18, he traded schoolwork for daily vocal and dance practice -- at least eight hours per day.
'Each year, not just the company but the industry itself seems to favor a certain 'type' of idol. Talent matters, of course, but I realized that other factors played a much bigger role,' he told The Korea Herald. 'Though it was disappointing, I decided it was time to move on before it got too late.'
Once he left the agency, he turned to studying and was admitted to a university in Daegu. He later worked for two to three years as a vocal coach for idol trainees before securing a more stable role at his current company.
According to Park, many trainees who drop out around the ages of 18 or 19 either resume their studies or take on part-time jobs to make a living.
Having spent their formative years around celebrities and chasing idealized self-images, the young trainees, he explained, can lose touch with reality, leading to self-doubt and anxiety about life beyond K-pop.
"When I was young, not debuting felt like the end of everything. But even the things that didn't work out helped shape who I am today. My experience interacting with adults during training gave me valuable skills for the workplace,' he said.
'I think preparing for the possibility that your dream might not come true is just as important as chasing it."
Lost dream revived on YouTube
Jeon Yoon-jeong, 29, a psychology graduate from Sogang University, recently surprised her friends by revealing a little-known chapter of her past: six years of K-pop idol training that began in elementary school.
As a young K-pop fan who adored groups like Wonder Girls, Big Bang and TVXQ, Jeon first dreamed of becoming an idol after performing the choreography to Wonder Girls' hit 'Tell Me' at a school talent show.
Joining an entertainment agency as a trainee was the first step toward that dream. From the age of 13 through high school, she auditioned over 300 times for agencies of all sizes.
At 19, her efforts finally paid off when she passed an audition for Mystic Story, a subsidiary of K-pop powerhouse S.M. Entertainment founded in 2013 by singer-songwriter Yoon Jong-shin.
"I poured eight hours a day into vocal and dance training as a trainee. But just before I could even join a debut team, the company abruptly scrapped its plans for a girl group. I had no choice but to walk away," she told The Korea Herald.
Letting go of her idol dream for the time being, she enrolled in a nursing program at a local vocational college and later transferred to Sogang University in 2019 to study psychology, a field she had always been curious about.
'I never lost interest in academics, even while preparing to become an idol. I hoped that if I ever became famous, people would say I had worked hard in school,' she said. "I didn't end up becoming an idol, but I think having that dream pushed me to work hard and keep up with my studies."
The stage she once chased as a trainee is no longer her goal, but music is still very much a part of her life.
She performed as a vocalist for the university's R&B music club Abyss, as well as the intercollegiate band club Youth Planning. A year ago, she launched her own YouTube channel, P.ne, where she has been uploading covers of others' songs along with videos documenting her everyday life as a college student.
"Even if I didn't debut as a professional singer, I believe I can still pursue my passion by sharing music on platforms like Instagram and YouTube. No matter where life takes me, whether it's graduate school for psychology or a corporate job, I want music to always be a part of who I am," she said.
'Through various club activities, I realized I wanted to create and sing my own music. I hope to grow as a singer-songwriter by sharing music-related content on YouTube. Back when I was training to be an idol, I used to sing for auditions and agency staff. But now, I can focus on singing the songs I truly love."
She noted that her story of an unrealized dream would resonate not only with teenagers dreaming of becoming idols, but with anyone preparing for a challenge, from university admissions to landing a job, emphasizing the value of having a dream, regardless of the outcome.
"Just having that dream kept me on the right track. I worked hard in school and tried to be honest in everything, even something as small as not throwing trash on the street," she said.
"While many of my peers were all taking the usual route -- studying hard for college --some of them told me they admired the fact that I had something I was passionate about. I never made it on stage as an idol, but I have no regrets. I picked up life lessons no textbook could ever teach me."
From idol trainee to K-pop marketer
Though they left their idol dreams behind, some trainees have found their way back into the K-pop industry, building new career paths in marketing and other creative roles.
Lee Ye-youn, a 27-year-old office worker, once pursued the path of an idol trainee while in college. She was 23 at the time -- an age many consider too late to start training.
Her days followed a strict routine. She went to school in the morning, then rushed to the company by 3 p.m. for vocal lessons, followed by solo practice and hours of group choreography in the evening. Most nights, she didn't get home until 11 p.m.
After a year of training, she was accepted by a small entertainment agency, but she left shortly after, discouraged by the slim chances of actually getting her debut.
"Before I started training, I thought having talent would be enough to get a chance. But things turned out to be way more competitive and complicated than I expected. Most of the trainees had started when they were in elementary school, and a lot of them were already in their midteens. There were many trainees from overseas,' Lee told The Korea Herald.
"A debut felt like a distant and uncertain goal. Also, life as a trainee seemed less about expressing myself on stage and more about being shaped into a marketable product. It wasn't in line with my identity or goals.'
Her idol career never took off, but the experience she gained as a trainee played a major role in shaping her professional path.
Holding on to her passion for K-pop, she joined one of Korea's top three entertainment agencies in January last year, where she worked on artist-related marketing.
Her time as a trainee exposed her -- both directly and indirectly -- to various aspects of the K-pop industry, including trends in music, performance and fashion, all of which gave her a deeper understanding of the industry as a whole, she explained.
'I applied to an entertainment agency hoping to better understand how K-pop operates behind the scenes and to play a small but meaningful role in its growth.'
Lee recently transitioned to an artificial intelligence startup, where she now works on issues related to content management.
'I'm interested in protecting the rights of artists and creators in the digital space,' she said. "The most rewarding part of my job is seeing illegal content actually get taken down."

In a world where it's easier than ever to get 15 seconds of fame, government data shows just how few make a full-time living from it in Korea In South Korea, being famous has never been more accessible, and at the same time, financially unstable. With the explosion of streaming, YouTube, and social media, public visibility is easier to achieve than ever before. But as the platforms have multiplied, so have misconceptions about what it actually means to be a 'full-time' celebrity, influencer or digital creator. While the term 'celebrity' once referred to established TV personalities and chart-topping singers, it now applies just as easily to actors in streaming-only dramas or influencers with tens of thousands of followers on Instagram. What's far less clear is who among them actually earns enough to do it professionally. So how much do you need to earn to be considered a full-time celebrity in Korea? There is no magic number that everyone agrees on, but there is a starting point among industry insiders. If you are not earning comfortably more than the average full-time Korean worker, which was 43.56 million won ($31,956) in 2023 according to Statistics Korea, it becomes difficult to call your work a full-time job. That is because creative income can be unpredictable. You might have a great month followed by several with almost nothing. Detailed national data about entertainers and creative workers offers a chance for data-based analysis. According to the Ministry of Culture's 2024 national survey of 5,000 creative workers, just 17.6 percent of broadcast entertainers earned more than 50 million won, equivalent to about $3,056 per month, from creative work in 2023. For pop musicians, just 4.7 percent did. The ministry uses a broad definition of "broadcast entertainer," including actors in traditional TV and streaming shows, comedians, emcees, and participants in various forms of reality or variety programming. A key distinction the report makes is between total household income and income earned strictly from creative work. For broadcast entertainers, average total household income hovered around 52 million won in 2023. But when isolating earnings from core creative activities, the average drops sharply to just 24.9 million won. Musicians fared the worst. Their average household income stood at 46.5 million won, but income from actual music-related activities was a mere 10.3 million won, which is less than a quarter of the total. This gap matters because total income often includes a mix of earnings unrelated to creative work, such as spousal income, side jobs, teaching, marketing gigs, business revenue — even government subsidies. As a former talent manager at a mid-sized multi-channel network explains, that matters. MCNs are companies that manage digital creators to help them grow. 'If most of what you earn comes from things other than creative work, even if your total income looks good, you're not really a professional entertainer or influencer. You're technically someone who does creative work part-time,' said the manager, who asked to be identified only as Hwang. Hwang offers a clearer framework for defining a full-time creator: at least 50 million won in annual income, with more than two-thirds of it coming directly from creative activity, sustained over two to three years. 'One strong year doesn't mean you've made it,' she said. 'Going viral once is like winning the lottery. A real full-time creator earns a living from their craft consistently and predictably.' By this standard, most digital creators in Korea wouldn't qualify. According to 2022 data from the National Tax Service, the average annual income of YouTubers and other digital creators was just 13.5 million won. Meanwhile, the top 10 percent of creators earned an average of 538 million won, or about $396,000, while the bottom half made less than 300,000 won — about $220 per year. 'Digital content is now one of the most extreme winner-take-all markets in Korea,' says Hwang. 'What used to be true of television, where a minority of celebrities made most of the money, is now magnified across every platform. YouTube, Instagram, streaming. The top 1 percent earn in billions, and the rest fight for scraps.' It's tempting to assume this is just the nature of creative industries everywhere. But according to Hwang, it's no exaggeration to say that Korea's case is a little more extreme. The country's media and cultural markets are unusually dense and digitally integrated. Algorithms change fast. Viewership is limited by language and audience tastes shift overnight. And with the barrier to entry lower than ever, competition is relentless. 'The system rewards visibility, and doesn't support sustainability at all,' says Hwang. 'You can get famous in one week and be broke the next.'

During a Friday meeting at the Elysee Palace in Paris, the French leader expressed his desire to strengthen collaboration between South Korean and French creators, signaling high-level recognition of K-pop's cultural power. Lee, who now leads A2O Entertainment in Los Angeles, was in Paris as the only Asian speaker at the 'France Music Week Summit,' held at Place de l'Opera on the same day. Macron, attending the event, extended his invitation to Lee directly and instructed French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati to follow up on practical steps for implementation. 'I imagine a world where fans are part of the creative process, where they are rewarded economically for their participation,' Lee said. 'In the age of generative AI, we must protect the rights of not only original creators but also the emerging roles of re-creators and prosumers.' He also drew attention from industry insiders by explaining 'Culture Technology' — the system he pioneered to build K-pop into a global cultural force. Throughout the summit, panelists cited K-pop's structure and success as a case study in innovation. Lee emphasized that in the AI era, protecting creators' rights has become more urgent than ever. His stance on safeguarding creative ownership resonated strongly with the summit's broader themes. Kumdanje, the renowned hanbok brand founded by Lee Il-soon, is celebrating over 30 years of preserving and promoting Korea's rich cultural heritage through traditional attire. Until July 27, the brand is holding a special exhibition titled "Seasons of Life: From Cradle to Sky" at Chuihantang, Samcheonggak in Seoul. The exhibition, which highlights the milestones in a person's life through traditional Korean clothing, aims to give visitors a deeper understanding of how attire can serve as a symbol of cultural values, life transitions and ancestral respect. Walk through seasons of life Lee, a celebrated hanbok designer, explains that the exhibition features a series of garments that correspond to the significant moments in life. From the first clothes worn at birth, known as "baenet jeogori" (a baby's first jacket), to the "baegilbok" (a hundred-day celebration outfit) and "dolbok" (first birthday outfit), the exhibition covers the full spectrum of Korean life stages. The garments include wedding attire and, poignantly, the "suui," a garment worn by the deceased for burial. Lee, whose life's work has revolved around preserving the tradition of hanbok, explains the significance of these garments. 'I have worked as a hanbok designer for 33 years, and in doing so, I have come to deeply appreciate the sacredness of the clothes worn during the milestones in life. From the baby's first clothes to the garments worn at one's death, these outfits are deeply ingrained in our culture and carry a profound meaning,' Lee told The Korea Herald. The exhibition aims to take visitors on a journey through these stages of life, each accompanied by a reflection on the traditions, blessings and prayers embedded in the clothing worn. The clothing not only marks the passage of time but also serves as a vessel for well-wishes and respect for the ancestors. Suui and significance of yundal One of the most captivating elements of this exhibition is the display of "suui," traditional burial clothing, made from silk. Lee Il-soon explains the significance of the suui in the context of Korean tradition: 'The suui is worn for a very specific occasion—the passing of an individual. It is, therefore, a very important garment. This year, we prepared suui for the yundal, or leap month. The leap month is seen as a time when no misfortune can occur, and it is traditionally believed to be a fortuitous time to prepare for important life events, including the preparation of the sui." She explained that while a leap month occurs in three- to four-year intervals, this year's leap month, which falls July 25-Aug. 22, is a special leap month, occurring every 100 years. Lee also highlighted the importance of yundal in Korean tradition. 'In the past, people would prepare the suui in the yundal month to ensure long life for their elders and a peaceful journey for the deceased. It's a special month, one that is believed to be free of misfortune. Preparing the suui during this time carries significant cultural and spiritual meaning,' Lee said. Cultural significance of hanbok Through the exhibition, Lee hopes to raise awareness of the deeper, spiritual meanings attached to traditional Korean attire. 'Hanbok isn't just clothing; it's part of a larger cultural framework,' she asserted. 'Each garment has a story to tell and a purpose beyond what is seen on the surface. Hanbok represents our culture's values of respect, dignity and the acknowledgment of life's transience.' Visitors to the exhibition will have the chance to explore how Korean traditional clothing serves as a medium of communication, conveying wishes for prosperity, good health and longevity. Lee believes that these garments are not merely for ceremonial occasions but are integral to understanding the Korean worldview and spiritual life. Lee's contribution to the global understanding of Korean culture extends beyond this exhibition. She has showcased hanbok on international stages, including in the US and Italy. Her role as a cultural ambassador has made her a key figure in the promotion of traditional Korean fashion worldwide. Lee recalled a particularly poignant moment during a fashion show in Rome when critics described the hanbok collection as 'unimaginably beautiful.' As the designer explains, the connection between Korean tradition and modern fashion has become a defining theme of her career. "Through my work, I have witnessed how the global fashion world embraces and admires the beauty of hanbok. At the same time, I feel a responsibility to preserve and share the deep cultural significance of these garments.' She continued, 'One of my proudest moments was during the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Italy, where I had the honor of presenting hanbok at a fashion show in Rome. The experience solidified my belief in the global appeal of our cultural heritage.' Future beyond tradition The current exhibition offers a glimpse into Lee's vision for the future of hanbok. The designer's daughter Chang Ha-eun, who runs the contemporary hanbok brand OUWR, is working to bridge the gap between traditional and modern fashion. 'My daughter is leading a new wave of innovation, bringing hanbok into the modern era by working with famous K-pop artists such as Blackpink and NewJeans while still honoring its traditional roots. The fusion of past and future is something I am very proud of,' Lee said. With this exhibition, Lee hopes to create a lasting dialogue between the past and the future, inviting both Koreans and foreigners to engage with and appreciate the deeper meaning embedded in the clothing that shapes a person's journey through life. The exhibition is open to the public at Chuihandang in Samcheonggak, Seoul.
