GEORGE TOWN: Police have detained a man believed to be responsible for a snatch theft involving a 71-year-old female motorcyclist, following a viral video circulating on social media.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the incident occurred at 3.30pm yesterday along Jalan Tembaga, Taman Greenview, Jelutong, where the victim's gold chain was snatched by a male motorcyclist.
He said that both the victim and the suspect fell to the ground during the incident.

Police hunt two men over armed robbery attempt in Hulu Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are tracking down two individuals suspected of attempting an armed robbery at a shop in Hulu Selangor in the early hours of June 18. Hulu Selangor acting police chief DSP Mohd Asri Mohd Yunus said the suspects' actions were captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV), and the victim lodged a police report at 6.42 am the same day. He said CCTV footage of the attempted robbery has since gone viral on social media. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects, dressed in black, wearing caps and face masks, and armed with machetes, tried to attack the victim using the weapon after allegedly entering the premises through the back door. 'The victim managed to scream for help, which caused the suspects to panic and flee the scene without taking anything,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Asri said efforts were underway to track down the two suspects, believed to be local men, and the case is being investigated under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery. He urged members of the public with information on the case to contact the nearest police station, the Hulu Selangor District Police Headquarters at 03-60641132, or Investigating Officer Insp Muhammad Saful Abdul Rahman at 013-5547435.

Police probe AI-manipulated viral video featuring former IGP

SHAH ALAM: The police are investigating a viral video showing an individual resembling former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah, allegedly linked to the receipt of financial aid from a person with the title 'Datuk'. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the video, which began circulating on the TikTok social media platform on June 20, was fake and had been manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. 'The video, which purportedly links the former police chief to the receipt of financial assistance from an individual named Datuk Abdul Ghani, and that the money had been deposited into a bank account, is completely untrue and baseless. 'The Subang Jaya District Police Headquarters stresses that the 13th Inspector-General of Police never issued any statement as depicted in the video,' he said in a statement yesterday. Hussein said Acryl Sani had lodged a police report denying that the video contained any official statement from him. He also advised the public not to share the video and urged them to verify the authenticity of any content before believing or disseminating it on social media. 'Selangor police take seriously the misuse of technology, such as AI, for the purpose of fraud or slander that could damage the reputation of any party. Firm action will be taken against those involved in spreading this fake content,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 419 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
