Way-too-early SEC baseball power rankings for 2026 season

USA Today4 hours ago

Similar to years past, the SEC was likely the premier conference across college baseball in 2025.
As to why, not only did the SEC have a majority of its' teams ranked within the Top 25 polls nationally throughout the season, but the conference also followed that up with a memorable postseason as well.
During the postseason, the SEC sent a total of 13 teams to the NCAA Tournament, but nine however saw themselves be eliminated in the regional round. As a result, only four advances to super regionals, as well as two to the College World Series in Omaha.
Both teams in Omaha would impress as well, one of which was the last team standing in college baseball to bring home the SEC's sixth consecutive national championship.
Looking ahead to 2026 however, the SEC is once again set to be college baseball's premier conference, chasing their seventh-straight national title. However, who are some of the SEC's top teams shaping up to be next season?
Here is a look at our way-too-early SEC baseball power rankings for the 2026 season.
16. Missouri Tigers
Missouri is coming off a rough 2025 campaign in which the Tigers finished with a 16-39 overall record, as well as a 3-27 mark in SEC play to finish at the bottom of the conference. The Tigers are also retaining head coach Kerrick Jackson this offseason, and will need a major bounce back campaign in order to be in SEC contention in 2026.
15. South Carolina Gamecocks
South Carolina struggled in year one under head coach Paul Mainieri, concluding the season with a 28-29 overall record, as well as a 6-24 mark in SEC play. Similar to Missouri previously, South Carolina will likely need a massive bounce back season in order to contend in the SEC in 2026.
14. Kentucky Wildcats
Led by head coach Nick Mingione, Kentucky made a regional appearance in the NCAA Tournament by going 31-26 overall, as well as 13-17 in SEC play. The Wildcats will likely be in contention to make the NCAA Tournament again next season.
13. Texas A&M Aggies
After entering this past season with a significant amount of hype, Texas A&M struggled in 2025 by finishing at 30-26 overall (11-19 in SEC) to miss the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies are also retaining head coach Michael Earley going into next season, but will need a bounce back campaign that will not be an easy task after likely losing Jace LaViolette, among others, to the MLB draft.
12. Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma's first season as a member of the SEC included a NCAA Tournament appearance in which the Sooners went 38-22 overall, as well as 14-16 in conference play. The Sooners should be positioned to make another NCAA Tournament appearance next season, even despite likely losing ace Kyson Witherspoon to the MLB draft.
11. Mississippi State Bulldogs
Mississippi State is the lone SEC team set to begin a new era in 2026, as Brian O'Connor takes over a Bulldogs team that made the NCAA Tournament at 36-23 overall, as well as 15-15 in conference play. O'Connor comes to Starkville from Virginia, and has already landed multiple impact additions so far this offseason through the transfer portal.
10. Florida Gators
Florida is coming off what was likely a down 2025 in which the Gators made the NCAA Tournament at 39-22 overall, as well as 15-15 in SEC play. As with every offseason, the Gators will reload, and Florida should be back in NCAA Tournament contention in 2025.
9. Alabama Crimson Tide
Led by head coach Rob Vaughn, Alabama is coming off a season in which the Crimson Tide went 41-18 overall (16-14 in SEC) to make the NCAA Tournament. The Crimson Tide are currently set to return one of the SEC's top players next season in shortstop Justin Lebron, and should be in NCAA Tournament contention.
8. Ole Miss Rebels
The Ole Miss Rebels had likely their best season in years during 2025, ending with a 43-21 overall record (16-14 in SEC) to make the NCAA Tournament. One of the SEC's surprise teams from this past season, all eyes will be on the Rebels again in 2025 to see if they can repeat their success.
7. Auburn Tigers
Auburn reached the super regionals of the NCAA Tournament this past season with a 41-20 overall record (17-13 in SEC). The Tigers will likely lose some key names off this past season's team such as Ike Irish, but should still be one of the top teams in the SEC.
6. Vanderbilt Commodores
The 2025 SEC Tournament champions, Vanderbilt had an early exit from the NCAA Tournament following earning the No. 1 overall seed, and as a result, ended the season at 43-18 overall (19-11 in SEC). Tim Corbin and Vanderbilt will reload once again this upcoming offseason, and will be back in NCAA Tournament in 2026.
5. Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia had a memorable 2025 season in which they went 43-17 overall, as well as 18-12 in SEC play, but saw an early exit occur in the regionals of the NCAA Tournament. Wes Johnson and the Bulldogs have been one of the top SEC winners in the transfer portal so far this offseason, and should be back among the top of the conference next year.
4. Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas made a deep run in the NCAA Tournament this past season, reaching the College World Series where the Razorbacks were one win away from the Finals, ending the year at 50-15 overall (20-10 in SEC). The Razorbacks should be back in the NCAA Tournament next season, despite some likely significant losses in Wehiwa Aloy, Zach Root, and Gage Wood, among others.
3. Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee fell just short of Omaha this past season, falling in the super regionals to conclude the year at 46-19 overall (16-14 in SEC). Tony Vitello and the Volunteers will reload in the offseason to contend in 2026, even with likely departures to prominent names such as Liam Doyle, Gavin Kilen, and Andrew Fischer.
2. Texas Longhorns
The SEC regular season champions announced their entrance to the conference in a big way in 2025, finishing with a NCAA Tournament appearance at 44-14 overall, as well as a 22-8 mark in SEC play. Led by head coach Jim Schlossnagle, the Longhorns will be back among the SEC's best in 2025 led by returning Freshman of the Year Dylan Volantis.
1. LSU Tigers
LSU was college baseball's final team standing in 2025, winning the national championship after a perfect run at the Men's College World Series to end the season at 53-15 overall (19-11 in SEC). The Tigers' second title in the last three years, LSU will be back in title contention yet again in 2026, despite some likely key losses in Kade Anderson, Anthony Eyanson, and Jared Jones.

USC men's basketball head coach Eric Musselman attends Dodgers game at Chavez Ravine

Eric Musselman has certainly made a name for himself as a basketball coach. That said, hoops is not the only sport he loves. Musselman is also a big baseball fan, and has attended numerous games throughout Southern California since taking the USC head coaching job. Last Tuesday, Musselman was in attendance for the Los Angeles Dodgers versus San Diego Padres game at Dodger Stadium. Prior to the game, Musselman chatted on the field with Padres manager Mike Shildt and Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell. 'Date night at Dodger Stadium,' Musselman wrote on social media, accompanied by a photo of himself and his family on the field. Musselman grew up in San Diego and attended the University of San Diego, so he grew up a Padres fan. Unfortunately for him, however, San Diego came up short in this one, as the Dodgers won 8-6. Eric Musselman witnessed one of the best matchups in Major League Baseball in 2025. Hopefully this helps him sell a vision of excellence to his 2025-2026 USC team, which will be expected to reach the NCAA Tournament and raise the bar for the Trojan hoops program.

Video: Mom Goes Viral For 'Embarrassing' Behavior At College World Series

Video: Mom Goes Viral For 'Embarrassing' Behavior At College World Series originally appeared on The Spun. An apparent mom is going viral for her "embarrassing" behavior at the College World Series in Omaha. The LSU Tigers topped the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in the College World Series. LSU topped Coastal Carolina in back-to-back games to win the College World Series for the second time in three years. It's the eighth national championship in program history. Meanwhile, at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, an LSU Tigers fan is going viral for her "embarrassing" behavior on the field. Tensions grew between a woman in a yellow dress and a man in an LSU Tigers football jersey. From the report: The gentleman in the LSU football jersey (clearly a little confused about which sport is being played) looks like he's enjoying the spirited conversation he's having with the lady in the yellow dress. It would appear the yellow-dressed lady doesn't feel the same way, though. Middle fingers are being flung and obscenities are being screamed, and it takes a lady from a different section in addition to the husband (?) to hold this psycho fan back from making some questionable decisions. The College World Series is often praised for its wild atmosphere. Thankfully, things didn't escalate to too much of a crazy level on Sunday. Tigers Today: Tigers shake off 3-game losing streak

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Tigers have bounced back after their first real stretch of adversity for the first time in a while. Starting with the second half of Thursday's doubleheader with Pittsburgh and the first two games of the series against the Rays, Detroit lost three in a row for just the third time all season. Advertisement Tigers end 3-game slide with rout of the Rays It sounds kind of bizarre when you think about it. The Tigers (49-30) have only lost three consecutive games three times as we head toward the All-Star break. Even crazier? One of those streaks was the first series of the season when they faced the reigning champion Dodgers on the road. Better yet? They have yet to drop four in a row. Speaking of bizarre, the team is coming off a bit of a weird stretch and a whirlwind series in Tampa Bay. With Wednesday's rain out, the Tigers and Pirates played a split doubleheader on Thursday — one that featured two rain delays of its own. The final delay came in the ninth inning in a 4-4 tie, which ultimately ended in a flop, an 8-4 loss in extras. So, what should have been an early getaway day to get into Florida, ended up being a late night. Tigers broadcaster Jason Benetti says the team landed in Tampa around 2:30 on Friday morning. Advertisement Sign up for the News 8 daily newsletter Jack Flaherty got roughed up Friday night in a 14-8 loss and Tampa's bats handled Brant Hurter and Sawyer Gipson-Long for an 8-3 loss on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers scored six runs in the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon to put away the Rays and avoid a sweep with a 9-3 win. But things look a little different with a big-picture view. From the start of the doubleheader to the end of Sunday's game, the Tigers went 2-3 and packed in a late-night flight in less than 75 hours. Not too bad, all things considered. Detroit Tigers reliever Brant Hurter adds some rosin to his arm during a game against Tampa Bay on June 21, 2025. (Getty Images) ROUGH WEEK FOR HURTER It was a week to forget for Brant Hurter. The reliever took two losses and gave up 10 total runs in three appearances. Advertisement It started with the 10th inning in the finale against Pittsburgh. After a brief rain delay, the Tigers couldn't generate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, so A.J. Hinch sent Hurter out to keep the Pirates at bay. But the Buccos came out swinging, touching up Hurter for four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk. Hurter served as the opener for Saturday afternoon's game in Tampa, and once again he got hit around. The 26-year-old lefty gave up four runs, all unearned, on two hits, two walks and a hit batter. With a 9-1 lead in the ninth on Sunday, Hurter was called on once again. This armchair manager suspects Hinch wanted to give him an opportunity to get his confidence back after two rough outings. It didn't work. He walked two batters and hit another to load the bases before being pulled. Two of those runners came around to score before Brenan Hanifee finished it out. Prior to this week, Hurter had been a solid option for the Tigers' bullpen. Before Thursday, he had a 1.67 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP (walks and hits per inning) in 37.2 innings. Advertisement The Tigers do have two other lefties in the bullpen: Tyler Holton and Matt Gage. Detroit Tigers pitcher Casey Mize leaves the field with a trainer in the sixth inning of Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 22, 2025. (Getty Images) MIZE AVOIDS INJURY The Tigers have already lost Jackson Jobe for the season and are still waiting for Alex Cobb and Reese Olson to get back, so it was a big relief when the team announced that Casey Mize did not suffer a serious injury during Sunday's game. Mize was pulled in the sixth inning with an apparent leg injury, but Hinch clarified afterward that it was just a cramp and the team was being cautious. The former No. 1 pick already missed two weeks last month with a hamstring strain, and spent two months on the injured list last year with a similar injury. Advertisement Sunday was one of Mize's best starts of the season. He gave up six hits but were able to pitch around trouble. He allowed just one run on a solo home run. INJURY UPDATE Speaking of Olson and Cobb, the two starters are getting closer to a return. Hinch told reporters on Friday that Olson will take one more rehab start before being activated from the 15-day injured list. The 25-year-old went down in mid-May after inflammation in the ring finger on his throwing hand. He has completed some rehab starts in the minors, initially avoiding his changeup, which places the most pressure on the injured finger. He pitched 3.2 scoreless innings on Thursday for Triple-A Toledo on 58 pitches. Advertisement We should also see more action this week from Cobb. The veteran got another pain injection in his left hip on June 13 and was shut down for a week. He has been approved for restarting bullpen sessions. He has made a handful of rehab appearances for High-A West Michigan and Triple-A Toledo, where he has been effective, but the timeline has yet to shake out. UP NEXT The Tigers have another day off on Monday before returning to Detroit for a six-game homestand. Tarik Skubal will take the mound Tuesday against the Athletics (32-48) and likely again on Sunday against the Twins (37-40). Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
