Coach Ashley Westwood knows something about India's football team that most others don't.

, where he won a major trophy in each of his three seasons, in the three games that he fielded national teams against India, Westwood drew one and has ended up winning the other two.
After the win with Afghanistan in March last year, which ended India's chances of direct qualification to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and led to the sacking of coach Igor Stimac, on Tuesday, Westwood guided Hong Kong to a crucial win over Manolo Marquez's India.
Playing at the Kai Tak Stadium which attracted a capacity 50,000 crowd for its opening game, Westwood's men needed a stoppage-time penalty to dismantle India 1-0, a result that throws the visitors' AFC Asian Cup qualification campaign into jeopardy.
For 90 minutes, India appeared to have done enough to return home with a point. But Stefan Pereira's 95th-minute penalty took Hong Kong to the top of the table while India remained rooted to the bottom. In both games, home and away, India failed to score, never mind the chances that fell at several players' feet.
Only the group winners qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. For a side that hasn't scored in 180 minutes and embarrassingly missed chances from handshaking distance, it will be tough crawling out of what has seemed like a long, dark tunnel.

At the other end, Hong Kong, who fielded eight naturalised players – three born in Brazil, others in Spain, France, Scotland, Nigeria and Cameroon – had chances of their own but were denied by the centre-back pairing of Anwar Ali and Jhingan. Asish Rai hastily cleared Oliver Gerbig's attempt from close to the goalline.
Just when it seemed like points would be split, there was disaster at the back. India conceded a penalty from a regulation long ball played inside the box as Kaith clattered into Udebuluzor.
Hong Kong's Brazilian-born forward, Stefan stepped up and converted.
'There will be a dark mood back home, but there are four more games, we will never give up,' added Jhingan.

"Why did we suddenly withdraw our 2027 AFC Asian Cup bid and agree to host the Santosh Trophy in Saudi Arabia instead? This has to be investigated by someone neutral,' said Bhutia, alleging "financial misuse" by the AIFF president. Chaubey has now expressed India's interest in bidding for the 2031 edition of the AFC Asian Cup. 'When we had the best chance, we gave it away. Now we're looking at 2031 where seven countries, including World Cup-qualified Uzbekistan, are interested. It makes no sense,' said the legendary striker. Dismissing Bhutia's allegations, Chaubey said, 'As a member of the (AIFF) Executive Committee, Mr. Bhutia has access to appropriate and empowered platforms to express his views. 'However, since his defeat in September 2022 (AIFF president's election), he has consistently and deliberately made baseless allegations and presented a distorted image of the AIFF. These actions tarnish the federation's reputation and Indian football internationally.' But because of Kalyan, now all sportspersons are being tagged badly." Bhutia further criticised Manolo Marquez's earlier dual role (both FC Goa and India coach) and highlighted the lack of planning and clarity on the part of the AIFF. "We should have sat with Manolo Marquez and asked him to choose -- either FC Goa or India. Or wait for six months. There was no plan. No meeting of the technical committee. "I don't mind Indian coaches, but for grassroots and long-term development, we need experts from Portugal, Spain... Those who've worked in academy systems." Kolkata: Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia spoke regarding the future of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025 after the future of the league remains in the air due to the Master Rights Agreement, which expires in December. On Thursday, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) released its 2025-26 competition calendar with no mention of the country's premier football league. This omission has raised eyebrows across the Indian football ecosystem, with clubs, players, and fans left speculating about what comes next. An AIFF source, speaking to IANS, confirmed that the ISL has not been included in the federation's calendar because its organisers, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), have yet to provide a schedule. The uncertainty stems from the fact that the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between AIFF and FSDL — the Reliance-Star joint venture that operates the ISL — is set to expire in December 2025. As of now, the agreement has not been renewed, and no concrete resolution has emerged from the discussions initiated earlier this year. 'There were some reports that stated that I had stopped the deal (Between AIFF and FSDL), I did not know I was that powerful. During the meeting, I had asked the Federation what their proposed deal was with FSDL. They did not have an answer; basically, they ate snacks, listened to their offer, and came back. They did not make any offer of their own. 'Now the court has ordered that the deal will only be made after the Supreme Court case regarding the AIFF constitution. From the Federation, FSDL, to the ISL and I-League clubs, all focus should be on Indian football,' said Bhaichung at a press conference. In April, the AIFF Executive Committee established an eight-member task force to examine the future of the MRA. Adding to the complications is the pending Supreme Court verdict on the revised AIFF Constitution, which has created further administrative gridlock. 'If you are saying that the ISL not taking place is a disaster, my question is whether the past one-and-a-half years have not been a disaster? If we have a new professional coming in (as president) and he could get a good deal and hopefully a win-win situation for Indian football. If it takes some time, that won't be good, but it's better than rushing into such stuff,' he added. Bhaichung also pointed out a deal, which he believes to have 'taken place under the table', which led to India withdrawing their bid to host the AFC Asian Cup in 2027. The former India skipper asked for this particular meeting to be investigated. 'There has been so much negative spotlight on the AIFF under Kalyan Chaubey, which has damaged the reputation. We have put in a bid for the 2031 Asian Cup. We earlier wanted to host the 2027 Asian Cup, but he went to Saudi Arabia, and god knows what under-the-table deal he has made, but Saudi Arabia will now host the 2027 edition, whereas he comes back to announce that Saudi Arabia will host the Santosh Trophy. That deal needs to be investigated,' Bhaichung pointed out.
