Solent ferry firm hails 'new era' of flying high-speed electric ferries in the UK
The boss of a Solent ferry company has hailed a "new era" of flying high-speed electric ferries in the UK.
Red Funnel, which runs passenger and vehicle services between Southampton and Cowes, Isle of Wight, has partnered with Belfast-based firm Artemis Technologies to launch a zero-emissions foiling vessel next year.
The 150-passenger ferry, which costs between £10-12 million to build, uses advanced hydrofoil technology and modularised battery systems.
The hull lifts out above the water, which significantly reduces drag and wake so that the electric boat can travel longer distances at speed.
The Red Funnel ferry will be plugged in for a quick charge each time it berths and is expected to save up to 3,700 tonnes of carbon emissions each year compared with conventional high-speed ferries.
Its launch in 2026 will follow that of two others built by Artemis Technologies, which are expected to launch in Belfast and Orkney later this year.
Iain Percy, Olympic sailing gold medallist and chief executive of Artemis Technologies, said the EF-24 Passenger is the first-ever electric foiling boat of this size in the world with permission to run commercial services.
"The problem with electric ferries is they really can't go far or fast," he said, with challenges including drag and huge amounts of energy from the grid to the batteries that need to be carried on board.
"The flying part here – the foil – it's the unlocker to do commercially viable range and speed."
Fran Collins, Red Funnel's chief executive, said: 'This isn't just a new vessel. It's the beginning of a new era – defined by zero-emission technology, a smoother passenger experience, and a shared ambition to decarbonise ferry travel.'
Speaking to a stakeholder audience at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, Ms Collins said the partnership with Artemis allowed Red Funnel to take a 'tangible' step in its decarbonisation journey with little risk.
"I was blown away by the technology and blown away by the work and the research that had gone into this," she said.
The cost of the ferry is an uplift of around 30% compared with conventional ferries but the firm will save an estimated £1 million a year on running costs, with a boat shelf-life of around 25 years, according to Mr Percy.

The Olympic sailor said the firm approached its mission to decarbonise maritime travel with 'the ability to save enough energy to justify the cost of the technology'.
"The reality of the world is that we can't increase costs to decarbonise in the current environment. It's not going to happen," he said.
This means both firms expect no increase in Red Funnel passenger fares when the service kicks off next year.
On ticket prices, Ms Collins said: "Iain was very clear that his vision for this is that it's cost-neutral to put in the technology, and that's where we expect it to be.
"So from a ticket price perspective, we're not going to put ticket prices up as a result of having the Artemis vessels in."
She also said the new boat will help the firm cut service times back to pre-pandemic from 35 minutes to 30 minutes so they can better match up the journey with train times and improve the service's reliability.
Red Funnel hopes to expand its fleet of electric foiling vehicles and introduce hybrid vehicle ferries but Ms Collins said the grid infrastructure remains a bottleneck to scaling their green ambitions.
In the meantime, the firm has been calling for the Government to exempt lifeline services from the planned UK Emissions Trading Scheme, which will put a cap on the amount of carbon firms can emit while allowing them to buy more allowances to cover their excess.
"I think we need to be very careful," she said. "I think that imposing charges on lifeline services when there's no alternative is wrong.
"I think we need to incentivise us all to change but we cannot be responsible for putting in billions of pounds of infrastructure upgrades.
"We have to be careful it doesn't just become a tax on people because it all comes back to the consumer."

The futuristic miniature machines - called "Pipebots" - are the same size as a toy car, and can track down leaks underground. Scientists now how the pipebots could "revolutionise" how water infrastructure is managed, and help save some of the three billion litres of water lost through leaky pipes everyday day in England and Wales. Experts from the University of Sheffield say the robots they developed can explore water pipes to check for cracks and faults, identifying potential issues before they even become a problem. Road works to repair utilities cost the UK economy at least £4 billion per year, and can cause disruption to businesses and residents. Much of the UK's ageing water network dates back to the Victorian era, and totals more than 215,000 miles in length. Every day, enough water to fill 1,200 Olympic swimming pools is leaked - but currently, the only way for human workers to pinpoint the flaw is by digging and locating a leak in the maze of pipes, a process that proves costly for both businesses and residents. Now, researchers from the University of Sheffield's School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, working with colleagues at the universities of Birmingham, Bristol and Leeds, say they have developed a range of miniature robots with new sensors that can travel through pipes and check for defects autonomously. The smallest of the robots measures just 40mm (1.5 inches) wide, and all the bots are equipped with tiny, high-spec acoustic sensors and cameras, which enable them to navigate and detect faults freely. Without the need to dig up roads or pavements, the research team say a Pipebot "swarm" can be placed in a deployment hub and lowered into a water pipe through a hydrant by an engineer. The tiny bots will then explore the area, scan for faults, and relay data back to the engineer above ground. The research team say the Pipebots are "intelligent" and will avoid any restricted areas, such as customer connections, and work together to clear areas quickly and efficiently. The Pipebots are equipped with all-terrain legs which enable them to navigate through any difficult paths they might encounter while underground, andcan also "talk" to each other to carry out tasks and problem solve. Hailing the development, Programme director Professor Kirill Horoshenkov said: 'Leaky water pipes are one of the biggest issues facing the water industry, not just here in the UK, but also globally as companies and governments grapple with ageing infrastructure. "Whilst pipe inspection technologies have improved, it is still incredibly difficult to monitor the condition of water pipes and find leaks in these vast networks, especially when the leaks are small. 'The Pipebots we have developed could revolutionise how we maintain our water infrastructure and could significantly reduce the estimated three billion litres of water lost daily in England and Wales. The bots would lessen the strain on resources and potentially save the UK economy part of the £4 billion lost annually due to utility street works and related disruptions." Aside from water pipes, the bots are capable of operating in other environments, he said, including sewers, gas pipes and dangerous sites that are inaccessible to humans.

FedEx founder Fred Smith, a Marine Corps veteran who revolutionized package delivery, dies at 80
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred Smith, the FedEx Corp. founder who revolutionized the express delivery industry, has died, the company said. He was 80. FedEx started operating in 1973, delivering small parcels and documents more quickly than the postal service. Over the next half-century, Smith, a Marine Corps veteran, oversaw the growth of a company that became something of an economic bellwether because so many other companies rely on it. Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx became a global transportation and logistics company that averages 17 million shipments per business day. Smith stepped down as CEO in 2022 but remained executive chairman. Smith, a 1966 graduate of Yale University, used a business theory he came up with in college to create a delivery system based on coordinated air cargo flights centered on a main hub, a 'hub and spokes' system, as it became known. The company also played a major role in the shift by American business and industry to a greater use of time-sensitive deliveries and less dependence on large inventories and warehouses. Smith once told The Associated Press that he came up with the name Federal Express because he wanted the company to sound big and important when in fact it was a start-up operation with a future far from assured. At the time, Smith was trying to land a major shipping contract with the Federal Reserve Bank that didn't work out. In the beginning, Federal Express had 14 small aircraft operating out of the Memphis International Airport flying packages to 25 U.S. cities. Smith's father, also named Frederick, built a small fortune in Memphis with a regional bus line and other business ventures. Following college, Smith joined the U.S. Marines and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He left the military as a captain in 1969 after two tours in Vietnam where he was decorated for bravery and wounds received in combat. He told The Associated Press in a 2023 interview that everything he did running FedEx came from his experience in the Marines, not what he learned at Yale. Getting Federal Express started was no easy task. Overnight shipments were new to American business and the company had to have a fleet of planes and a system of interconnecting air routes in place from the get-go. Though one of Memphis' best-known and most prominent citizens, Smith generally avoided the public spotlight, devoting his energies to work and family. Despite his low profile, Smith made a cameo appearance in the 2000 movie 'Castaway' starring Tom Hanks. The movie was about a FedEx employee stranded on an island. 'Memphis has lost its most important citizen, Fred Smith,' said U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee, citing Smith's support for everything from the University of Memphis to the city's zoo. 'FedEx is the engine of our economy, and Fred Smith was its visionary founder. But more than that, he was a dedicated citizen who cared deeply about our city.' Smith rarely publicized the donations he and his family made, but he agreed to speak with AP in 2023 about a gift to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation to endow a new scholarship fund for the children of Navy service members pursuing studies in STEM. 'The thing that's interested me are the institutions and the causes not the naming or the recognition,' Smith said at the time. Asked what it means to contribute to the public good, he replied: 'America is the most generous country in the world. It's amazing the charitable contributions that Americans make every year. Everything from the smallest things to these massive health care initiatives and the Gates Foundation and everything in between,' he said.
