Eknath Shinde has shown the 'real Shiv Sena' to everybody: Amit Shah

The Hindu2 days ago

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has shown the "real Shiv Sena" to everybody, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said.
The senior BJP leader made the remark on Friday while acknowledging the presence of Shinde at an event organised by the lobby grouping Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industries & Agriculture (MACCIA) in Mumbai.
The Bal Thackeray-founded party split in June 2022 after Mr. Shinde rebelled and brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government under Uddhav Thackeray. Since then, the two factions have been engaged in an acrimonious battle to lay claim to the founder's legacy and be called the "real Shiv Sena".
"Shinde has shown which is the real Shiv Sena to everybody," Mr. Shah said.
The remarks come a day after both the Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray factions, now called Shiv Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT), respectively, celebrated the undivided party's foundation day.
In polls held in November last year for the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena won in 57 constituencies, while the Sena (UBT) could clinch only 20 seats. In 36 seats, the Shiv Sena candidate defeated Sena (UBT) contestants.
The battle of the Senas is bound to get more fierce in the upcoming local body polls across the State, especially in Mumbai, the country's richest civic body, which was a bastion of the undivided Shiv Sena for many decades.

Kerala Bypolls: Counting begins in Nilambur seat, Congress candidate leads in early trends

Counting of votes for the bypoll in the Nilambur Assembly seat in Kerala's Malappuram district began at 8 am Monday. Early trends show that Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath is leading as the first round of counting was in progress. The constituency voted on June 19 after CPI(M)-backed two-time Independent legislator P V Anvar quit last year. The Nilambur Assembly seat, which falls within the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat represented by the Congress's Priyanka Gandhi, had registered 75.87 per cent of polling. In the first stage of counting, 1,403 postal votes will be opened before unlocking Electronic Voting Machines, which had recorded 1,74,667 votes. Votes in electronic machines will be counted in 19 rounds. The CPI(M) has fielded its young party state secretariat member M Swaraj, and the Congress has nominated Shoukath, the son of late party veteran Aryadan Muhammed, who had uninterruptedly represented the seat from 1987 to 2016. Anvar, who had quit raising a revolt against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is contesting as an Independent candidate. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Mohan George, who had been with the regional Christian party Kerala Congress before embracing the BJP after the by-election schedule was declared. The bypoll outcome is crucial for the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF regime and the Congress-led Opposition UDF as the Kerala Assembly elections are slated for April-May 2026. A victory in the by-election will serve as a major boost for the Pinarayi Vijayan regime, which is gearing up for a third consecutive term. Anvar has declared that he is in the election fray to defeat 'Pinarayism,' (style of functioning). Congress, which has been in Opposition for the last nine years, has stated that it is fighting to prove the anti-incumbency factor against the Vijayan regime.

Counting Underway For Bypoll In 5 Assembly Seats Across 4 States

New Delhi: The counting of votes is underway for the by-elections to five Assembly seats in four states -- Gujarat, Punjab, Kerala and Bengal. The bypolls were held on June 19 for two Assembly seats in Gujarat -- Visavadar and Kadi; and one each in Punjab (Ludhiana West), Bengal (Kaliganj), and Kerala (Nilambur). In Gujarat, the Visavadar seat recorded 56.89 per cent voter turnout; in Kadi, the turnout was 57.90 per cent. Kerala's Nilambur registered a 75.27 per cent voter turnout in the bypoll. West Bengal recorded 69.85 per cent voting percentage in the Kaliganj seat, and in Punjab's Ludhiana West constituency, 51.33 per cent voters turned up. The deaths of the incumbent legislators necessitated the bypolls in one seat each in Gujarat, West Bengal and Punjab, and the resignation of two MLAs led to the polling in Kerala and another seat in Gujarat. In Gujarat's Kadi, the BJP has fielded Rajendra Chavda, Congress has Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA from the same seat, and AAP has fielded Jagdish Chavda. In Visavadar, the BJP nominated former Junagadh district president Kirit Patel against AAP's Gopal Italia and Congress' Nitin Ranpariya. The key contenders in West Bengal's Kaliganj are Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Sheikh, backed by the Left Front, Trinamool Congress' Alifa Ahmed, and BJP's Ashish Ghosh. In Kerala, the ruling LDF nominated M. Swaraj for Nilambur bypolls, whereas Aryadan Shoukath (Congress-led UDF), Trinamool Congress' P.V. Anvar, and Mohan George of the BJP-led NDA are the other candidates in the fray. In total, ten candidates are in the fray. The contest is seen as a litmus test for the ruling LDF government and its prospects in next year's Assembly elections. Ludhiana West bypoll has a four-cornered battle among Sanjeev Arora from the AAP, Bharat Bhushan Ashu from Congress, Jiwan Gupta from the BJP and Parupkar Singh Ghumman from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Arora is AAP's Rajya Sabha candidate, and it is being speculated that Arvind Kejriwal may be nominated for the upper House in case Arora wins. Though the AAP leaders have so far denied this move. The counting of votes for the Ludhiana West Assembly is being held at Khalsa College For Women.

‘Stop the war on Iran': Mass protests rock New York after US strikes Tehran; netizens ask ‘Do they have permit'

Anti-war protests erupted as demonstrators marched through the streets of New York to condemn the recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities amid heightened security measures across major cities in the US. Meanwhile, netizens asked whether they have permit to march on streets. Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of New York, waving Palestinian flags and carrying signs that read "Hands Off Iran" and 'Stop the War on Iran', in response to Operation Midnight Hammer, a US-led military strike targeting Tehran's nuclear sites, namely Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan. Voicing the criticism toward Israel, protestors accused it of instigating the conflict with Iran and condemning its military actions in Gaza. One of the users commented, 'Do they have a permit to march in the street like that? If not, why is it tolerated?' Another stated, 'Do they have permits? Then arrest them. Charge them. Repeat.' A third remarked, 'Expected'. 'Nobody cares', 'Sad. Ignorant. Deviant.', 'Amazing. Preprinted signs carried by the unemployed. Where oh where do they get the money to print all of those signs? Hmmm' were some other reactions. Earlier in the day, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) mentioned that it was increasing its presence at key locations throughout the city to closely monitor any potential repercussions as the situation in Iran evolves. More resources would be deployed to religious, cultural and diplomatic sites throughout the city, it added, stressing the coordination with federal partners as part of precautionary measures. 'We're tracking the situation unfolding in Iran. Out of an abundance of caution, we're deploying additional resources to religious, cultural, and diplomatic sites across NYC and coordinating with our federal partners. We'll continue to monitor for any potential impact to NYC,' it said. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke of the success of the operation carried out by the US in Iran on Sunday. "Last night, on President Trump's order, the US Central Command conducted a precision strike in the middle of the night against three nuclear facilities in Iran - Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz - in order to destroy or severely degrade Iran's nuclear programme. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs will demonstrate, it was an incredible and overwhelming success," Hegseth stated.
