‘Art Detectives' Review: Flirtation and Forgery on Acorn TV
There's nothing genuinely counterfeit about 'Art Detectives,' although the series is far less about art than about detectives, of the type that usually populate Sunday-night Brit mysteries on PBS. Is it a case of bait-and-switch? Or just the palette at hand? 'Any Day Now,' a rentable new feature about the 1990 robbery of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston (during which a Vermeer, three Rembrandts and a Manet were heisted) is also far more about the characters on screen than the ones on canvas. The still life does not comfortably conform to the motion picture.
Thus 'Art Detectives' ranges far and wide. Investigator Mick Palmer (Stephen Moyer, 'True Blood') is the U.K.'s virtual one-man Heritage Crime Unit, whose assignments can range from Belfast to Cornwall to London and involve vintage wines, Titanic memorabilia or a crime that happened to be committed in a National Trust house. His jurisdiction is fluid, his knowledge extensive; his cases involve forgery, fraud, trafficking and murder. During the investigation into an art historian's fatal bludgeoning in episode 1, he is assisted by a local constable, Shazia Malik (Nina Singh), who takes stock of her tiny force, small-minded supervisor and the rolling landscape of art investigation and promptly doubles the size of Mick's department.

The death of a man in the North East could be linked to a dangerous drugs batch, police have warned. Northumbria Police have launched an investigation into the death of a man in his 40s, who was found dead in the Harlow Green area of Gateshead on Friday. Officers believe his death and four cardiac arrests in the area since Thursday could be linked to the same drugs batch, but have said enquiries are at a very early stage. 'Given the similarities of these reports from the same area, it is important that we ensure this warning message is shared far and wide.' Man torched mum's home after raiding her fridge while she was away in Blackpool
A man fuelled by booze torched his own mum's house after he raided the fridge while she was in Blackpool. Liam Patrick Deeney climbed through a window of the house before he set fire to the property in what was described as an "extremely dangerous" incident. Detectives said his impulsive actions also put the properties neighbouring the house in danger too. On Sunday, May 21, 2023, Deeney broke into the house on Thornton Road, Tyldesley, Wigan, at around 11pm while his mum was away at the seaside resort. Greater Manchester Police said: "He entered the property through a back window and stole food and alcohol from the fridge before setting the address on fire." The investigation revealed Deeney, 30, ignited two separate fires - one in the bedroom wardrobes and another on an armchair in the living room, leading to the entire bungalow being engulfed in flames, Lancs Live reports. "The fire has caused damage to items of significance and memorabilia such as his mother's medals, clothing, jewellery, and old pictures of sentimental value," GMP added. Deeney, of Lever Street, Tyldesley, was arrested and charged. He later pleaded guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered. He was sentenced to three years, four months in prison at Bolton Crown Court last Thursday (June 12). In a statement issued following the hearing, Detective Constable Riyaz Patel: "Liam Deeney's actions were extremely dangerous and put neighbouring properties in danger. "He acted in an impulsive manner whilst under the influence of alcohol, destroying his mother's home and sentimental items belonging to her that meant so much to her. "I hope this sentence shows that GMP will pursue domestic violence perpetrators to keep victims safe and ensure justice is delivered." A restraining order prevents Deeney from contacting his mother for five years. He was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £228. Police cordon inside York pub after 'extremely rare incident' sees 'ruccus' kick off
A York pub's tap room has been taped off after an 'extremely rare incident' caused a 'ruccus' to kick off. The Victoria, on Heslington Road, was taped off by North Yorkshire Police last night, Saturday, June 21. The pub has apologised to its punters and all who may have attended, and experienced the 'abuse and violence'. A 'ruccus' kicked off after a window was smashed above where two regulars were sitting in the tap room. The pub offered a 'special call out' to the pair sitting beneath the window frame. The pub issued a statement on social media, informing punters that it will only open the tap room once the force has attended - even if this means having to sit guests outside. Condemning last night's antics, pub management said: "After a rare incident in the Vic last evening, we are still awaiting police scene of crimes to attend . We are hoping that this is before our regular opening time of 2pm. "If this is not the case entry will be only possible via our beer garden or the Heslington Road entrance. But we will advice as we get further information. "We will of course keep you posted as and when. Can we apologise to any patrons in last night who witnessed the incident and a special call out to our two avid regulars Bob and Dave who despite the ruccus and enduring windows being broken above them still managed to finish the Guinness. "This is an extremely rare incident for the Vic and hopefully this has not put the parents and potential freshers from choosing York University for their studies as it is a great place and lovely city. "Abuse and violence towards, my staff, customers and myself will not be tolerated under any circumstance. Its gonna be another warm day and our beer garden is not affected so 'come on down' at 2pm."
