British man arrested at Disneyland Paris after trying to marry girl, 9, in private wedding
A private event had been organised to take place in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at the theme park, but Disney cast members were alerted by the sight of a child.
A British man has been arrested at Disneyland Paris after an apparent attempt to wed a nine-year-old girl in a private ceremony.
Disney staff alerted authorities after spotting the 22-year-old man with a young girl, who was wearing four-inch heels taped to her feet and accompanied by her Ukrainian mother, at a private event held at 5am on Saturday, before the park opened to the public.
The wedding was scheduled to occur at dawn in front of the Sleeping Beauty Castle, reports the Mirror. The French venue had been rented for a wedding, but the organisers did not disclose their plans to Disney.
According to reports from BFM TV in France, Disneyland Paris was misled about the event's nature. The organiser allegedly impersonated a Latvian national and used fraudulent documents to secure the contract for the park's privatisation.
Reports suggest guests were recruited online through advertisements seeking 200 adults and 100 children aged between five and 15 to act as attendees at a 'rehearsal' for a Disneyland wedding.
BFM obtained video footage showing approximately 100 seated guests awaiting the ceremony while a female violin trio performed at dawn on a stage adorned with flowers. The event reportedly cost around £110,000.
"Four people were arrested and questioned: the groom, who was believed to be the organiser of the event and is presumed to be British, aged 22; the mother of the child, a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman; and two Latvian nationals aged 55 and 24", according to a statement from the prosecutor's office in the nearby town of Meaux, France.
The 55-year-old Latvian man alleges he was hired to impersonate the bride's father for 12,000 euros, only to discover at the last minute she was nine years old, as per local news reports.
Disneyland Paris informed French newspaper Le Parisien its team promptly shut down the event and prevented guests from entering the venue.
The nature of the wedding remains uncertain, whether it was a publicity stunt or an actual ceremony. A medical examination revealed that the young girl had not been subjected to any violence, stated the prosecutor's office.
A police source indicated the groom claims to be the head of a production company and they were filming a video.
An updated statement from the prosecutor's office clarified: "So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They privatised Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding."

Two suspects have been charged with 'fraud and breach of trust' against Disneyland Paris.
One guest at the wedding told Le Parisien: "We all thought we were going to attend a wedding... Everyone was stunned, no one expected it. Disneyland did things very well.
"They canceled everything as soon as they realised the bride was a child. We were shocked to see that."
Another guest, Yeleen, who attended the ceremony with her daughter, recounted: "I saw a little girl dressed in white. I saw her hair prepared with curls and a lady picking her up in her arms.
"At that moment, I was shocked. I realised when I saw the child. It was atrocious."

Christopher Eccleston has been filming in Newport
While residents of Newport may see a film crew swarming landmarks in Newport and immediately think of Doctor Who, this production is entirely different. Welsh production company Hello Deer are currently filming in John Frost Square Newport Central Library, producing a new feature film titled 'About a Bell'. 'About a Bell' is an independent film about Sami, a Syrian refugee, and Bryony, a young librarian, who embark on a highly personal quest to preserve a bell from a demolished church. Listings on IMDB detail that Sami is played by comedian Omid Djalili, and Bryony will be played by Eleanor Worthington-Cox. This main duo will be joined by some giants of British acting including Doctor Who star and Emmy Award Winner Christopher Eccleston, Jonathan Rhodes and Scot Williams. Though the public may not be allowed into the library today, it would be safe to assume that it has been entirely taken over by cameras and crew. This stellar cast will be directed by BAFTA nominee and star of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' Simon Callow, who is making his first foray into directing since the 1990s. Unlike most other film crews this one is very small and only employs around 40 people, but staff on set feel that this is the best way to operate. Location assistant Matthew Marais, 25, said: 'I think they want to film in Newport as it's a city that's been developed. 'These independent films are the best kind of jobs because everyone cares so much more. If its someone's passion project, like this, then everybody wants to try harder to bring it to life.' Rehearsals for the film began last week in Newport, inside the company's production office on the other side of the river from today's filming location. In a cryptic post on Instagram, viewers were shown two of Newport's infamous bridges that any dedicated resident would recognise. Filming will take place around Newport and Cardiff, before the production moves to Belgium to complete filming in a few weeks. The production itself is set in Newport, so residents are sure to see parts of the much-loved city they call home throughout the film when it is released. There is no release date announced for the production yet.

Victory for Metro after grassroots music venues handed £30,000,000 in support
Grassroots music venues across the UK are being handed a package of support worth millions of pounds by the government, in a victory for Metro's tube map campaign. Campaigners have said the moves could prove to be 'very, very radical' for a sector that has struggled under the pressure of rocketing costs, Brexit restrictions and the lingering impact of the Covid lockdowns. The Creative Industries Sector Plan, published earlier today, sets out measures including a shake-up of business rates and backing for a 'live levy' on arena gigs to support small venues. It also unveils investment worth £30 million to go towards grassroots spots across the country and mentoring opportunities for emerging talent. Mark Davyd, founder and CEO of the Music Venue Trust (MVT), said the plan is 'pointing in the right direction on a number of things'. He told Metro: 'The live levy alone, on its own, is a very radical intervention that provides for structured investment across a number of years. 'That really would solve a lot of problems at the grassroots level.' However, he said the plan didn't include 'exactly what's going to happen now', adding: 'Our view is really it would be best if it was in legislation.' A statement from the government containing more details is due to be published in the autumn, Mark said. Ticketing app DICE has put together a list of their 25 grassroots artists you need to see in London over the next six months. With tickets ranging from free to £27.50, these shows will ensure a great night to suit all tastes and budgets. Click HERE to catch the full list. He continued: 'We'll wait and see what this comes up with, but there are significant opportunities here, and it's good to see that lead being taken.' The MVT is one of several organisations to work alongside Metro on our campaign to promote the small venues that serve as the bedrock for the British music industry. At the heart of the effort is the London Grassroots Music Tube Map, which promotes the sites, music legends and new talent who define the culture of the capital. Stars including Billy Bragg, Skin and Prima Queen have also lent their backing to the campaign with recollections from the early days of their careers. Among the other campaign groups that backed the push was the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC). David Martin, chief executive of the FAC, said his organisation welcomes the Music Growth Package but wishes it was clearer on where the money would go. More Trending He told Metro: 'I think the public might be quite surprised to know that the investment was so small for an industry that's worth £6.7 billion – but ultimately the increase is positive.' Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: 'The UK music industry is truly world-leading — home to exceptional talent, iconic venues, and live events that draw fans from around the world. 'That's why music will be a key pillar of our Sector Plan, with the power to drive economic growth and create good jobs in every part of our country, as we deliver our Plan for Change. 'From helping artists tour internationally to supporting grassroots venues, this plan will ensure the music industry continues to thrive for generations to come.'
