
MPs tell Keir Starmer disability benefit cuts impossible to support
In a letter from the 42 parliamentarians, who represent both veteran and new Labour MPs spanning from the party's left and right, Starmer has been urged to change the direction of his leadership, the Guardian has reported.
The Prime Minister has already faced widespread criticism from members of his own party over the proposed £5 billion in benefit cuts, which includes the significant tightening of eligibility for personal independent payments (Pips).
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves's planned disability benefit cuts would affect around 700,000 families who are already in poverty.

Brian Leishman is the only Scottish Labour MP among the signatories, which includes names like Diane Abbott and Kim Johnson.
Starmer now faces the biggest rebellion of his premiership when the House of Commons votes on the proposed measures next month.
In the letter, Labour MPs said the proposals, set out in a government green paper, have 'caused a huge amount of anxiety and concern among disabled people and their families'.

It goes on to say: 'The planned cuts of more than £7bn represent the biggest attack on the welfare state since George Osborne ushered in the years of austerity and over 3 million of our poorest and most disadvantaged will be affected.'
It added: 'Whilst the government may have correctly diagnosed the problem of a broken benefits system and a lack of job opportunities for those who are able to work, they have come up with the wrong medicine. Cuts don't create jobs, they just cause more hardship.'
The letter calls on ministers to delay any decisions until they see full assessments on the impact of any cuts, raising concerns that they are being asked to approve the plans without proper knowledge of the consequences.
Adding that there needs to be 'a genuine dialogue with disabled people's organisations to redesign something that is less complex and offers greater support, alongside tackling the barriers that disabled people face when trying to find and maintain employment'.
It adds: 'We also need to invest in creating job opportunities and ensure the law is robust enough to provide employment protections against discrimination. Without a change in direction, the green paper will be impossible to support.'

Free school meals rolled out to secondary pupils for first time, Swinney says
Free school lunches will be provided to some youngsters in Scotland's secondary schools for the first time in August – although First Minister John Swinney has said making the meals available to all would be 'desirable'. The First Minister said that 'in principle' the Scottish Government supported universal free school meals, saying he would 'prefer that to be the case'. But he added: 'I have got to live within the resources available to me.' Swinney said: 'Of course universal provision is desirable, but I have to deliver policy proposals within the resources the government has got available to it.' His comments came as the Scottish Government confirmed that from August a number of S1 to S3 pupils will be eligible for free school meals – with the First Minister saying that while there is already 'extensive free school meal provision' for primary school children 'this is the first time we have gone into the secondary sector'. The Scottish Government is investing £3 million in a trial project, which will see lunches provided for more than 6,000 high school students – taking the total of youngsters who can claim a free lunch to more than 360,000. The latest phase of the project will see lunches being provided for those students eligible for the Scottish Child Payment in almost 60 schools in eight local authority areas – Aberdeen, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles), Fife, Glasgow, Moray, North Ayrshire, Shetland, and South Lanarkshire. Swinney said the measure was about 'making sure that poverty is not an impediment to the achievement and the performance of young people'. The trial project will be independently reviewed, with the First Minister saying uptake would be considered, along with the 'beneficial impact of free school meals on the learning opportunities for young people'. The First Minister spoke about the 'targeted intervention' as he visited Springburn Academy in Glasgow, where he ate lunch with some of the students. About 140 pupils at the school could benefit from the free lunches when the trial project comes into being from August. Speaking about the scheme, Swinney said: 'It's a measure designed to tackle the cost-of-living challenges families face, to tackle child poverty and to make sure that children have good health, nutritious food to strengthen their ability to learn in school.' The First Minister added: 'The free school meals programme is key in our national mission to eradicate child poverty, which saves families who take up the offer around £450 per eligible child per year. 'This next phase of the rollout will ensure that this offer is available to more families across the country. 'We know the positive impact that access to a healthy and nutritious meal can have on a pupil's learning and achievement in school. 'This demonstrates how important the programme is in our efforts to close the poverty-related attainment gap in Scotland, ensuring that every child is given an opportunity to succeed in education regardless of their background.' He continued: 'The Scottish Government will also continue its broader support to tackle the cost of the school day, including our £14.2 million School Uniform Clothing Grant and our investment in the £1 billion Scottish Attainment Challenge.' Rachel Reeves has previously blasted the Tories' Brexit deal, saying it 'reduced trade flows' between Britain and Europe. Similarly, Starmer has also criticised Boris Johnson's botched deal to leave the EU, stating it hampered the UK's ability to tackle the small boats crisis. The current Labour government has now committed to repairing the 'fractured' relationship with their nearest neighbours. In May, the PM announced his 'common sense' deal with the EU, which he declared was a 'win-win' deal that would put the UK 'back on the world stage'. Starmer announced key changes, including allowing tourists to use e-gates at airports in Europe. He said businesses will be able to sell burgers and sausages into the bloc again and shoppers will see cheaper prices in the supermarket. The deal marked a stark difference from the tensions during Theresa May's time as PM, when the UK and EU were locked in fraught negotiations to get a Brexit deal over the line. At the beginning on 2025, a YouGov poll revealed that just 30% of Brits believe it was right to leave the EU, with 55% believing Brexit was wrong and just 11% seeing it as more of a success than a failure. The survey also revealed that one in six leave voters now say it was the wrong choice, marking the lowest public belief in Brexit since YouGov began asking after the 2020 referendum. Dream job at Scotland's 'historic' island spaceport with accommodation provided
A job opportunity "making history" at a Scottish island spaceport has come up. The successful applicant will have accommodation and all meals provided for them. At the moment, SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland is seeking a Steward. The role will involve providing top-quality customer service across the hospitality function at the accommodation facility at SaxaVord Spaceport. The steward will be responsible for ensuring all areas are clean and well-maintained, and offering an "outstanding" experience for staff, clients, and visitors. Among the main responsibilities of the role will be carrying out a variety of housekeeping tasks and duties, assisting with the serving of breakfasts and dinners, and responding to customer inquiries. The steward will also be expected to report safety hazards or potential issues to site management and maintain a friendly attitude when interacting with both guests and the team. Those applying for the position should have experience in a similar housekeeping position, strong team and interpersonal skills, and a keen eye for detail. Although full training will be provided, a strong knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards is also beneficial. Other desirable attributes include experience in a bar or serving alcohol and a history of working in a dynamic environment with changing priorities. Meanwhile, applicants should possess the flexibility and adaptability required to work in a rotational and remote environment. The island is renowned for its unspoilt views, amazing wildlife, and fascinating history. The main settlement on Unst is the village of Baltasound, which is situated along the island's eastern coast. The village features a post office, a convenience store and bakery, and a nearby hotel with a restaurant. The job listing adds: "Shetland offers stunning landscapes, vibrant local culture, and a close-knit community. The Spaceport, located on the island of Unst, is at the forefront of space innovation and technology in the UK."
