British mountaineer breaks own record for most Everest climbs by a non-Sherpa

Indian Express19-05-2025

British mountaineer and guide Kenton Cool has broken his own record for the most ascents of Mount Everest by a non-Sherpa, reaching the summit for the 19th time on Sunday. The 51-year-old, originally from southwest England, stood atop the world's tallest peak—at 29,032 feet—accompanied by Nepali Sherpa Dorji Gyaljen.
Cool's latest climb, supported by Himalayan Guides Nepal, comes two decades after his first Everest summit in 2004. Since then, he has scaled the mountain almost every year, missing only a few seasons due to exceptional circumstances such as the 2014 avalanche, the 2015 earthquake-triggered disaster, and the 2020 pandemic-related closure.
Cool's milestone has been praised by fellow adventurers. American mountaineer Adrian Ballinger, currently guiding a team on Everest, told Reuters: 'His experience, charisma, and strength make him a valuable part of the Everest community.' Jordanian mountaineer Mostafa Salameh, one of only 20 people to complete the Explorers Grand Slam, wrote, 'Amazing, Kenton.'
Over the years, Cool has also guided several high-profile climbers, including British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
Cool's record-breaking climb comes in a season that has already seen tragedy.
In the first reported fatalities this climbing season, a climber from India was among the two people who died Thursday while attempting to summit Mount Everest, according to hiking officials cited by Reuters. Another climber was from the Philippines. He was tired when he reached the fourth high camp and died while resting in his tent, as per a tourism department official.
Despite these risks, hundreds of climbers flock to Everest during the brief spring window when weather conditions are favourable. This window typically closes by the end of May, as the monsoon season sets in and makes climbing treacherous.
Only a few days each year offer the calm, clear, and relatively warm weather needed for climbers to survive at the Mount Everest. These brief periods—known as 'weather windows'—typically fall in mid to late May, making it the prime time for summit attempts.
While Cool holds the record among non-Sherpas, Nepali guides continue to lead in total summits. Dorji Gyaljen, who climbed alongside Cool, completed his 23rd ascent. Meanwhile, legendary Sherpa Kami Rita currently holds the overall record with 30 summits and is once again on the mountain this season, aiming for another.

American McCartney Kessler secured her third career title on Sunday, defeating Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska 6-4 7-5 in a rain-interrupted Nottingham Open final. Kessler, who recorded her first main draw tour-level win on grass earlier this month at Queen's, dominated the match from the outset and sealed victory in one hour and 34 minutes. The second set went to 3-3 before Kessler fought off a spirited challenge from Yastremska to close it 7-5. Will Prince Harry extend invitation to Royal family for Invictus Games 2027? ‘King absolutely wants a…'

Prince Harry is planning to reach out to the Royal Family by inviting them to the 2027 Invictus Games, a new report stated. This is seen as a strong sign that he wants to make peace with King Charles and other senior Royals. Prince Harry who was recently seen at the 2025 Invictus Games, is personally backing the invitation.(REUTERS) According to Daily Mail sources, an email invitation will go out later this month, followed by a more formal one. The timing was reportedly chosen to give the Royal Family the best shot at attending, since King Charles usually plans his schedule up to three years in advance. This unexpected move could lead to the first public appearance of Harry with the Royal Family since Queen Elizabeth's funeral. But some royal experts are skeptical. Also Read: Queen Elizabeth really made that comment when Prince William was born: 'Thank goodness he hasn't….' 'King might attend to show support…' Ingrid Seward said: 'The King might attend to show support for the Armed Forces and congratulate Harry on the most significant success in his life. The only reason the King is wary of associating with his son is that he no longer trusts him not to repeat their private conversations as he has done in the past. This goes for all the working members of the family.' Royal commentator Katie Nicholl added: 'The King absolutely wants a relationship with his youngest son and with his grandchildren. He has an incredible capacity for forgiveness and he wants to be magnanimous in all of this and therefore there's certainly a possibility that the King might consider attending Invictus.' Prince Harry sent invitation to Royal family Harry, who was recently seen at the 2025 Invictus Games, is personally backing the invitation. Sources stated it's meant to give his family plenty of time to plan if they decide to come. Back in 2014, Prince William, Queen Camilla, King Charles, and Harry were all pictured together at the Invictus Games opening ceremony in London. Even though the Royal Family has shown strong support for the Invictus Games in the past, accepting the invitation this time could be tricky. The 2027 Games will be held at the NEC in Birmingham from July 12 to July 17. That last day is also Queen Camilla's 80th birthday, and there may already be celebrations in the works. It's also unclear if Harry will bring Meghan and their children, Archie (6) and Lilibet (4), back to the UK. In the past, he's said he won't travel with his family unless they have full police protection. A source told, 'Harry has agreed that Invictus should extend an invitation to his family. Invictus hopes the Royal Family will come along to support the wounded veterans taking part. Harry is hopeful his father will set aside their differences to attend the Invictus Games and support veterans. The Royals have always been hugely supportive of Invictus and proud of what Harry has achieved in that arena. This is one olive branch from him which might be reciprocated,' as reported by Daily Mail. Prince Harry to fix things with family Prince Harry, now 40, recently told the BBC that he would like to fix things with his father and the rest of the family, even though his memoir Spare caused a lot of hurt. 'There's no point in continuing to fight any more,' he said. 'Life is precious.' He also added: 'Forgiveness is 100 per cent a possibility because I would like to get my father and brother back.' Prince Harry, William, and King Charles were last seen together in July 2018. As of now, it's still unclear if Meghan and the kids will come to the Games. The couple was last seen with their children in a 2021 holiday photo. Prince Harry to take first move to reunite family This may be the first time Harry has made a public move to reunite the family. He reportedly approved the guest list and wording of the invitations himself. The emails will be sent to the Royal Family's private secretaries. The Games are expected to bring a big economic and social boost to Birmingham. A spokesperson for Invictus said: 'No formal invitations have been issued as preparations are in the early stages.'

Barmy Army Honour David Lawrence At Headingley With Musical Tribute

Last Updated: The Barmy Army honoured David "Syd" Lawrence during the first Test between India and England. Lawrence, the first British-born Black cricketer for England, died at 61. English fan group 'The Barmy Army' paid tribute to David 'Syd" Lawrence during day three of the first Test of the five-match series between India and England at Headingley in Leeds on Sunday. The former England fast bowler passed away at the age of 61 after a year-long battle with motor neurone disease (MND). WATCH: Lawrence, the first British-born Black cricketer to represent England, was diagnosed with MND last year. This degenerative condition causes muscle wastage and affects the brain and nerves. 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE (King's Birthday Honours) following his brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease," his family said. 'Syd was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field. A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd faced every challenge with all his might, and his final contest with MND was no different. Lawrence, who earned five Test caps for England, made 280 appearances for Gloucestershire and took 625 wickets for the county. He made his Test debut at Lord's against Sri Lanka in 1988, with his career highlight being a five-wicket haul against the West Indies at the Oval in 1991. In 2022, Lawrence became Gloucestershire County Cricket Club's first Black president and was named one of the inaugural Honorary Life Vice-Presidents of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) earlier this year. ECB chairman Richard Thompson described Lawrence as 'a true trailblazer of English cricket and a man of immense courage, character, and compassion." 'His impact on the game extended far beyond the boundary ropes," Thompson added. 'As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. As a leader and advocate, he broke barriers and inspired change, becoming a powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport." Ahead of the start of play, India and England players wore black armbands to pay their respects.
