Tamil Nadu notifies Greater Flamingo Sanctuary at Dhanushkodi
The Tamil Nadu government has officially declared a Greater Flamingo sanctuary at Dhanushkodi in Ramanathapuram district.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the sanctuary via video conferencing on the occasion of the World Environment Day event organised by the Departments of Environment, Climate Change and Forests in Chennai on Thursday (June 5, 2025). Thangam Thenarasu, holding additional charge as Minister for Environment, R.S. Rajakannapan, Minister for Forests, and Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary to Departments of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, participated in the event.
The move aims to preserve a critical stopover point along the Central Asian Flyway for thousands of migratory wetland birds.
The sanctuary spans 524.7 hectares and encompasses both revenue and forest lands within Rameshwaram taluk. The designated area, part of the ecologically sensitive Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, is home to a variety of ecosystems, including mangroves, sand dunes, mudflats, and marshes. These unique features support a rich biodiversity, from migratory birds and marine life to nesting sea turtles.
A Government Order (G.O.) issued on June 4, 2025, by Ms. Sahu, noted that according to the recent 2023-2024 wetland bird survey, the Dhanushkodi region recorded over 10,700 wetland birds, representing 128 species including herons, egrets, sandpipers, and both Greater and Lesser Flamingos.
Mangrove species such as Avicennia and Rhizophora dominate the Dhanushkodi lagoon, providing essential breeding grounds and natural defenses against coastal erosion. The sanctuary status is expected to encourage responsible ecotourism, generate local employment, and raise public awareness about wetland conservation, the G.O. said.
T.M. Anbarasan, Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Srinivas Reddy, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force), Rakesh Kumar Dogra, Chief Wildlife Warden, also participated.

Commuters are requested to follow the suggested routes and cooperate with authorities to ensure smooth traffic flow. If you're heading to or passing near Palace Grounds today, here are the important travel updates you should be aware of. – Windsor Manor Junction → BDA Upramp → Ramanamaharshi Road → P.G. Halli Bus Stand → Kaveri Junction → Mekri Circle Service Road → Mekri Circle. – Parking is available at Gate No. 02 of Tripuravasini Palace Grounds. – Attendees can then walk to the event venue by following the posted signs. – After the event, buses should exit through the Hunasemara Gate on Jayamahal Road and continue via Mekri Circle, heading either into or out of the city. Participants coming from different areas can follow these directions: – From Hebbal (via Bellary Road): Use the Mekri Circle underpass and head to Gate No. 02 for parking. Minister launches 111 new mini bus services in Salem district
Under the New Comprehensive Mini Bus Scheme 2024, a total of 53 new mini buses and 59 extended route services began operations across the district on Monday. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the scheme from Thanjavur via video conferencing, following which Minister for Tourism R. Rajendran flagged off the buses at the Old Bus Stand in the presence of District Collector R. Brindha Devi. The Minister said the scheme would primarily benefit residents in rural areas. Services launched in each division were, Salem West Region - 4 new mini bus services, 18 route-extended services, Salem East Region - 11 new services, 7 extended routes, Salem South Region - 2 new services, 5 extended routes, Sankari Region - 10 new services, 6 extended routes, Attur Region - 22 new services, 10 extended routes, and Mettur Region - 4 new services, 12 extended routes. Mayor A. Ramachandran, former MLA S.R. Sivalingam, Assistant Collector (Trainee) Vivek Yadav, and officials were also present.
