Watch: Police recover 10 AK-47s, 9 pistols after Meyerton CBD shoot-out
The police recovered a cache of illegal firearms following a dramatic shoot-out between members of two rival security companies at Meyerton taxi rank in Gauteng this morning.
Vaalweekblad reports that in a statement issued today, police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that officers recovered 10 AK-47 rifles and nine 9mm pistols at the scene while combing the area.
The motive for the shoot-out and the ownership of the firearms are still under investigation.
The shoot-out, which occurred during peak morning traffic near the busy taxi rank in Meyerton's central business district, sent shockwaves through the community.
One person, reportedly affiliated with one of the security firms, was shot and taken to hospital.
Police dispute claim that learner was injured
In an earlier report by Vaalweekblad today, it was revealed that a learner from Hoërskool Dr. Malan was struck by a stray bullet, prompting concern and outrage from parents.
However, police have since disputed this claim, stating that no learner was injured. 'Police went to the school and verified that no scholar was not injured during the shooting,' the statement reads, though the wording appears ambiguous.
The use of military-grade firearms such as AK-47s in a public setting has raised serious concerns about the presence and conduct of private security companies operating in the area.
The police are investigating a case of attempted murder, and the public is urged to report any information that could assist in the investigation by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submitting tip-offs anonymously via the MySAPS App.

Hijacked vehicle recovered within a day in Adams Mission
A HIJACKED vehicle was recovered by Blue Security's tactical officers in the Adams Mission area on June 18. The Isuzu bakkie, which was reported hijacked earlier that day, prompted the driver's vehicle tracking company to send an urgent request for assistance from Blue Security. Also read: Adams Mission man arrested for possession of two AK-47s and a pistol Idan Smollan, Blue Security community manager, said, 'According to the driver, he was forced to pull over when suspects in a maroon Suzuki seven-seater pointed firearms at him. Two suspects then exited their vehicle and entered the Isuzu, forcing the driver to sit in the middle seat while one of the suspects drove off with the vehicle. The hijackers parked the bakkie on a nearby gravel road, where they offloaded stock from the vehicle. Fortunately, the driver was not physically harmed. The suspects fled the scene in the maroon Suzuki, taking the driver's cellphone but leaving the vehicle key behind.' With the tracking information provided, the vehicle was located and secured. Members of the tracking company arrived shortly after, and the vehicle was handed over to KwaMakhutha SAPS for further investigation. 'This incident underscores the importance of co-ordinated action between private security and tracking services in quickly recovering hijacked vehicles and ensuring the safety of victims,' said Smollan.
