Why new world snooker champion Zhao Xintong cannot play in China
A curious footnote to Zhao Xintong's
triumph at the World Snooker Championship on Monday is that he remains banned from playing in China.

He is forbidden to appear at events there, despite being free to compete in – and win – the world's biggest tournaments.
The origins lie in 2023, when Zhao was among 10 Chinese players banned in the sport's
biggest match-fixing scandal
An investigation found he had not fixed matches, but he was handed a
global suspension of 30 months , reduced to 20 months, after accepting he had been a party to another player fixing two matches, and had bet on matches himself.
The Chinese Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) then announced domestic bans that for some players
outlasted the global ones – equating to the original punishments before they were reduced for pleading guilty. Zhao was given a 30-month sanction in China.

Global chiefs cleared Zhao to resume playing at the end of his 20-month ban in September 2024, and he began competing on the Q Tour, the amateur circuit beneath the elite World Snooker Tour.

Man charged in connection with HK$3 million Hong Kong Hermes bag robbery
A man has been charged in Hong Kong for allegedly robbing nearly HK$3 million (US$382,170) worth of pre-owned valuables including Hermes handbags from a shop before fleeing to Thailand and being sent back to the city. Most of the stolen items were recovered.

Hong Kong wedding firm boss arrested as closure leaves couples in lurch
Customs officers have arrested the owner of a Hong Kong wedding decoration company that closed suddenly leaving more than 100 engaged couples in dismay, with the firm revealed to have racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debts. Acting assistant superintendent Ho Wai-sum of customs' unfair trade practice investigation division said officers arrested the 40-year-old male owner of a wedding decoration company based in San Po Kong on Friday after receiving 166 complaints about the firm allegedly wrongly accepting payments. 'We suspect that when the owner received prepaid sums, there were no reasonable reasons to believe the company could provide the services promised,' he said. Last month, the suspected closure of Ps Wedding and Event Decoration, which had an office in San Po Kong, sparked 31 complaints to the Consumer Council involving more than HK$337,000 (US$43,200) in losses. Ho revealed that the 166 complaints made to customs involved HK$1.9 million in total, with each contract for between HK$3,000 and HK$40,000. The acting superintendent said preliminary investigations showed that the company, which had been operating for 13 years, owed money for rent and salaries before its abrupt closure.

Why Hong Kong's star cyclist Ceci Lee wants a different title this year
Hong Kong cyclist Ceci Lee Sze-wing has promised to go flat-out on Saturday in pursuit of a first time-trial success at the city's National Road Championships. Lee has won the road race at the past two editions, but finished runner-up behind Chloe Leung Wing-yee in last year's race against the clock. An Olympian last year on road and track, Lee has outgrown the local scene, and acknowledged Hong Kong titles were only 'a little target'. However, honing her time-trialling is a priority as she targets major future success in the velodrome, and specifically the omnium. 'If I master it, it's going to give me more weapons in the omnium, so it's very important for me,' Lee said. 'Most of the time, I've not done well in time-trialling, and I need to improve to become an all-rounder.' Ceci Lee said improving her time-trialling could help her in the omnium.
